My dear friends of Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Before all else, I would like to congratulate the young women and men who received the Sacrament of Confirmation this past November 5th and 6th. Bishop Gerald T. Walsh, the Episcopal Vicar of Westchester County, conferred the 7-fold Gift of the Holy Spirit and exhorted the 9th graders to be witnesses to our faith in Jesus Christ in their lives. It is not just an individual blessing, but a certain grace for the whole parish! I am truly grateful to all the families for their understanding in these particular times, to Mrs. Diane Meade, our Director of Religious Education, and to her Team for overseeing this sacramental formation and for coordinating and organizing the 4 beautiful Confirmation Liturgies.
It has been exciting the past 2 weeks getting out and about on the parish campus to meet you: after daily and Sunday Masses, at the Rosaries and Holy Hours, before and after school as you drop off and pick up your children, around the school trying to put masked faces and names together of students and teachers, joining Zoom calls of Religious Education classes - thank you 700+ students, as well as parents and teachers, for doing your best in these challenging circumstances to learn about our faith in Jesus - and the HSOR (how wonderful it is to have a vibrant gathering of young people who seek to encounter the Lord) and celebrating Mass in our convent with our beloved religious Sisters of Charity and meeting Buttons!
I am coming to know a lot about our parish, our rich history and your hopes for the future, as I hear from the leaders and coordinators of various parish organizations and activities, from some of their members, in addition to our dedicated staff, who are here to assist you: St. Veronica’s Guild, Music and Choir, Renew and Rebuild Committee, the Holy Name Society, the Ushers (especially as we approach Christmas, please consider becoming one!), Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament, Bereavement, School of Religion, Maintenance, the Parish School (thank you for all you are doing as Principal, Mrs. Tracy Keelin, to keep our students safe), our Parish Secretary and Receptionist, our Business Manager, the collection counters and the Parish Council!
I know I have a lot more organizations and people I need to hear from including CYO, the Boy Scouts, the Trustees, Social Ministry, Cornerstone and the PTA. I plan to constitute a Finance Council soon.
Being able to celebrate Sunday Mass with you and to preach, to baptize new Christians into our Catholic faith, to offer the consolation of Jesus to loved ones mourning the loss of a loved one, to pray the Rosary with you and to offer Benediction after Adoration, are blessings we priests cherish.
I am grateful for the support, encouragement and friendship of Fr. Rafferty and Fr. Thumma, and the enthusiasm and presence our seminarian, Carlos, brings to the Church, school and youth group, know I am so happy to call IHM home!
Please pray for our parish and for your new pastor, that Jesus the Good Shepherd be the true guiding Light of our lives.
In Jesus and Mary,
Msgr. Luke M. Sweeney
