Hello everyone. I hope you are well and keeping safe. Amazing how June disappeared and here we are in the second week of July! I have some unusual and pretty shocking news to share with you. I received a phone call from Bishop
Edmund Whalen, the Vicar for Priests and head of Priest Personnel. He was speaking on behalf of Cardinal Dolan. I was very surprised with what he asked of me but on the other hand, God is full of surprises. He asked me if I would go to Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Manhattan as the new pastor because the present pastor and his Franciscan associates were all leaving in September. I paused in silence because I have been so happy here at IHM and its only been 2 years since I arrived. Not to mention there are a lot of plans afoot here that I would like to see through their completion. But then I remembered my own ordination ceremony of priesthood when the bishop took my hands into his and asked, “Do you promise respect and obedience to me and my successors?” My answer was , “I do.” His response was , “May God who began the good work in you carry it to completion.”
My friends, I have been nothing but delighted to serve here at IHM as your pastor. I hope it has been pretty obvious! I was looking forward to at least my first 6 year term and then with your approbation another 6 years to finish my 12 year term as pastor. Yet, on the other hand I felt very honored that the Cardinal would ask of me my help to serve in a parish with many complex challenges and where there is a hungry demand for a bilingual pastor. As you know, most of my ministry as a priest has been in the inner city and I especially enjoyed my time as pastor of Our Lady of Angels in the Bronx which was primarily Hispanic. Coming here to IHM has brought me new joys and new challenges that I would never have known, especially to get to listen to you, serve with you and work with you in growing our parish community. I pray that you will help the new pastor to do the same.
My appointment is probably going to be September 1. The thought of moving again stresses me out a little bit. I think I will be calling 1-800-Got-Junk! I know this is a huge surprise for you as it is for me. However, two things are really important for me to share with you. I have loved being here. I have loved serving as your pastor and I was content to do so for years to come. Secondly, this new direction is a call from my bishop who I admire so much and whom I want to serve and assist in any way possible. I do remember saying to Cardinal Dolan awhile back, if I can help in anyway, be expendable in anyway, please allow me to do so. I guess he took me at my word!
I don’t do well with good byes. In fact, I tear up rather easily. These are different and difficult days and I felt my answer to serving the parish of Holy Name, their outreach to the poor, their multilingual celebrations, their works of mercy and justice, helped me finalize the decision. God’s will be done! Please pray for me and be most assured that I pray for all of you with the deepest sense of gratitude for your kindness and patience. Permit me not to be a living wake, as they say! I look forward to these remaining weeks with you to help our wonderful parish and serve God together.
