As I write my final weekly bulletin article, I find myself reflecting on the great privilege the Lord Jesus has given me over these past five years to celebrate the Eucharist with you, to offer absolution and the Anointing of the Sick, to reflect on God’s Word through homilies and these articles, to come to know you, the Body of Christ here at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish! Together, with God’s grace, we’ve faced challenges, celebrated moments of joy, grown in faith, and sought to live out hope and charity in real and concrete ways. I’m grateful for the encouragement we’ve shared as we strive to follow Christ and set our sights on the promise of eternal life and our Father’s heavenly home!
Immediately following this article, you may find our Parish Financial Report for fiscal year 2023–2024. While typically released in the fall, I hope the included context helps make sense of the numbers, with some insight into our current and upcoming fiscal years, as well.
This flocknote bulletin is the work each week of Joe Macli, who puts it all together and lays it out, Joanne Tormey, who communicates a number of the details and Emily Theisen who prepares the printed bulletin that is then runoff and folded by Julie Casino. A Final Word on the Sacraments
Confirmation completes the Sacraments of Initiation and offers a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit’s sevenfold gifts, strengthening us to live the fruits of the Spirit, especially love, which marks us as followers of Jesus. The Holy Spirit, given by the Father and the Son, enables us to reflect the life of heaven and witness to Christ in the world. For our young people who will be making their confirmation next year, as well as for your families, consider it a particularly special moment of God’s closeness and blessing upon you. Boldly ask the Lord for many, even miraculous, graces for you and your family during this time when a Successor of the Holy Apostles will Confirm you!
Regarding the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony, I encourage any couples in marriages ‘outside the Church’ as it is referred to, such as in civil marriages or a minister not delegated by the Church, to speak to a parish priest about having the marriage recognized, blessed, convalidated in our Catholic faith. If there are issues of prior unions that were not recognized by the Church, work with the priest and they can be efficiently addressed. For prior unions in the Church for Catholics or marriages of non-Catholics in any venue, my encouragement would be to petition the Church to review such unions to see if something essential was lacking at the time of the vows, but became evident only later. Allow the Church to walk with you through this process, commonly referred to as a Petition for an Annulment. This could be the way to deeper communion with Jesus Christ in His Mystical Body the Church and a return to Sacramental participation. These processes, though sometimes unfamiliar, are meant to be paths of healing, mercy, and renewal.
Do not forget the power of sacramentals—blessed rosaries, medals, images, and other blessings. These holy signs open us to God’s grace in the Sacraments, where we are granted divine life even now, in anticipation of the glory to come!

Pastor’s Financial Report: Fiscal Year 2023–2024
Dear Parishioners,
Regarding the fiscal year ending August 31, 2024, I offer this update with sincere thanks for your faithful stewardship. Your generosity sustains our parish’s spiritual mission, maintains our facilities, and supports our parish school and religious education programs. The Mystery of the Incarnation that we celebrate each year at Christmas is certainly reflected when the parish takes up this accounting since the divine and the human, Jesus' Gospel and what is necessary to operate in our world, come together.
Regarding the fiscal year ending August 31, 2024, I offer this update with sincere thanks for your faithful stewardship. Your generosity sustains our parish’s spiritual mission, maintains our facilities, and supports our parish school and religious education programs. The Mystery of the Incarnation that we celebrate each year at Christmas is certainly reflected when the parish takes up this accounting since the divine and the human, Jesus' Gospel and what is necessary to operate in our world, come together.
This report indicates that in Fiscal Year September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2024, before factoring in restricted monies (such as Capital Improvement, Catholic Education, Renew and Rebuild) the Church had a surplus of $62,204.37, due in large part to a bequest of $250,000, and IHM School had a deficit of only $70,848.47 (after Second Collection was applied), down significantly from prior years that were offset by government reimbursements no longer available to us. The rise in the Education Expense line for this fiscal year is due to the school coming out of the pandemic restrictions with greater activities and more students enrolled.
The following is the context to help understand the bottom lines of Fiscal Year 2023-24:
Parish Giving, Investment Income, and Bequests
Since the last financial report during Lent of 2024, we have seen a notable increase in the weekly and monthly offertory, averaging approximately $1,470 more per week. This is a very encouraging trend and a testament to your renewed commitment to our parish’s ongoing needs. It is also timely, as we may commence an Increased Offertory Giving Campaign this fall 2025 to further stabilize our finances and achieve financial sustainability.
The Parish Council has repeatedly requested a concrete number of what IHM parish should receive in our main collection each week to meet expenses and to get out of operational deficits or reliance on bequests for operational expenditures. I have found arriving at a number challenging as our weekly and monthly support is complemented by the important Christmas and Easter collections, and we also receive contributions that are not reflected in the weekly collection reports, but are reported to the archdiocese. Such contributions included, but are not limited to parishioners who give their yearly donation in an annual or biannual amount, parishioner School Families who offer their obligations all at once. Currently, as of accounting numbers through May 2025, we project an income of $1,820,225 for Fiscal Year 2024-25, and expenses of $1,840,192 (down from the expenses you see in this report for FY 2023-24) with a deficit of approximately $20,000. For our proposed budget 2025-26, we are forecasting church operational expenses of $1,838,181.
If I had to put a number on the average weekly collection to financially sustain the church expenses moving forward, I would say $25,500. Support of a Catholic's parish is seen as integral to living our faith. For those who sacrificially and regularly or annually contribute, thank you! For those who give infrequently and not according to means, may I encourage you to look into WeShare or other ways (the envelopes) to see to this important contribution to the life of our parish that complements your presence at weekly Mass. For those who do not give at all but could, or perhaps because a family feels they pay their fees to Religious Education or to the CYO and that is sufficient, may I encourage you to support the overall parish mission on a regular basis, or perhaps through targeted giving to the Capital Improvement collection or Catholic Education collection.
Additionally, I invite you to consider IHM Parish and School in your estate planning. In recent years, generous bequests, including one over $250,000, have allowed us to meet both ongoing needs and address unexpected issues. Planned giving leaves a legacy that secures the future of our parish for generations and funds can be restricted for specific use, such as Capital Improvements.
For those parishioners who are comparing these reported numbers for Fiscal Year 2022-2023 with this report and the last one from Lent 2024, you will notice a difference in the amount reported in "Other Income" under the Church Income and Expense Comparisons (from $38,848.13 to $36,269.15). Our accountant reassigned investment income of $2,578.98 to better reflect the nature of this income.
Parish operational expenses saw some key changes:
Office expenses decreased significantly after a migration to a VOIP phone system, now serving the rectory, church, and school. This was a long-term cost-saving initiative.
Church expenses increased modestly due to the purchase of a full nativity set. However, a number of figures were memorialized by individual donors, which has meaningfully offset the cost.
Our fundraising events in the Fall of 2023 included two concerts. While these brought joy and community spirit, they also required financial support from the parish, especially due to the costs inherent in producing such artistic and religious culture. Only one concert was presented in December 2024.
Supporting Our Children in Faith: Religious Education & School
Our Religious Education program, under the Coordination of Mrs. Laura Covais, though smaller in enrollment compared to previous years, remains central to our parish mission. The program continues to operate at a deficit, an expense that represents an investment in the next generation of Catholics and one we seek to balance with tuition and fees. A major component of this cost is the employment of off-duty Scarsdale police officers, ensuring the safety of children and families crossing from the South Lot to the school building, particularly during winter months. This expense is essential and non-negotiable.
Our sports programs are strong and the hope of CYO athletic programs are meant to connect people more deeply to the Church, Christ and others. Moving forward, all parishioner participants this 2025-26 school year must be enrolled in either IHM School or another Catholic School, our Religious Education Program, or in a recognized homeschool program. The exception for some non-Catholic non-parishioners to participate remains, at the discretion of our Coordinator. These changes reflect our desire to form well-rounded young people—athletically, intellectually, and spiritually, and to support families who are part of the parish.
Immaculate Heart of Mary School is an important dimension of how our parish responds to the mission of Jesus Christ to teach all nations and to bring people into the divine life through the sacraments. In August 2023, the parish transferred the funds from the monthly Second Collection for Catholic Education, which had been accruing from 2020 through 2023, to help the school reduce its deficit that fiscal year. This year, $45,000 of the received donations, approximately 80% of the total collected for Catholic Education, was transferred to reduce the school’s shortfall to under $71,000. This current fiscal year 2024-25, the deficit should be even less and the projection for 2025-26 is a modest surplus. Thank you to the parish for your strong monthly support of Catholic Education from September to June. The remaining 20% was directed to assist the Religious Education shortfall in 2023–2024.
From the start of my pastorate, and especially while the school was working to rebuild enrollment and stabilize finances, I directed that the church would assume 100% of all campus-wide maintenance costs, under the supervision of Parish Property Management. The school covers the daily cleaning costs of the school building that is also utilized by the Religious Education Program and the sports program. Crystal Blue is our vendor that sees to this cleaning. With school enrollment now projected to exceed 300 students in the upcoming 2025–2026 year, thanks to the hard work of our principal, Mrs. Tracy Keelin, and her dedicated staff, teachers, and aides, the time has now come to realign our shared responsibilities in the budget. Beginning this fall, the school will assume 40% of maintenance expenses, and the church will cover the remaining 60%. This shared approach will help keep our campus running sustainably and see it reflected in the budget and accounting.
Renew and Rebuild: Projects Completed and Projects to Come
Thanks to your generosity to the Renew and Rebuild capital campaign, we completed repairs to the rectory masonry, chapel, and roof of the choir tower. This summer the rest of the carpet in the sanctuary is to be replaced and the organ will receive its first deep cleaning in 25 years. Afterwards, the remaining funds will be quite modest, and a number of deferred maintenance items will need attention in the years ahead.
I entrust to our incoming pastor, Father Stephen Ries, the support of those involved in maintenance on staff and dedicated parishioners, the Finance Council, the Renew and Rebuild Committee and the Parish Council to determine how to proceed with such potential long-term capital improvements as I see them.
These include:
School and Church Exterior
Address water infiltration on the north side of the school, from stairwell to stairwell and from the third-floor down including all windows there. Addressing the mortar works around the third floor of the school outside of the aforementioned area.
Revisit roof slate repairs on the church where they are missing or broken, and repair of the chapel roof that is leaking.

Church Interior
Restore two confessionals to working condition that have a 1/3 space for the priest, a movable screen/wall for face-to-face or anonymous confessions, and 2/3 space for the penitent to either kneel or sit; sound proofing of the confessions and climate control.
Reupholster or replace church kneelers for comfort and durability; address any broken pews.
Get proper kneelers for the backs of the chapel chairs.
Complete the interior church painting, originally included in the Renew and Rebuild plan.
Upgrade church lighting.
Possible installation of handicap accessible bathrooms on the main level.
Chapel and Rectory
Repaint the chapel after resolving roof leaks.
Repair window seals and masonry on the Parish House, particularly around the main floor parlor/sitting room, where water continues to seep in.
Evaluate the church boiler, with an eye toward modern and efficient heating alternatives.
Lower Church & Accessibility
Modernize the lower church: new paint, updated cafeteria tables, updated lighting, and possible future flooring upgrades.
Install a lift or platform system to allow handicap accessibility from an outside ramp to the lower church.
Grounds and Drainage
Improve drainage on the side of the church near the school so we no longer rely on a temporary pump during rainstorms.
Reinstate a central drain in the main parking lot to prevent water pooling and icy conditions in winter.
Resurface both parking lots, or maintain with new asphalt and necessary patching.
Looking Ahead and Offering Support
These projects are not luxuries—they are necessary steps to preserve our beautiful parish campus and ensure it remains welcoming and functional for years to come. I warmly invite you to consider adopting or partially supporting one of these initiatives through directed giving or reserved donations. Friends. our Gospel for today gives us an opportunity to reflect on the great prayer that Jesus taught us. Think how this prayer links us to all of the great figures in Christian history, from Peter and Paul to Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Francis of Assisi, John Henry Newman, G.K. Chesterton, John Paul II, and right up to the present day.
A desire to pray is planted deep within us. It just means the desire to speak to God and to listen to him. Keep in mind that prayer is not designed to change God’s mind or to tell God something he doesn’t know. God isn’t like a big city boss or a reluctant pasha whom we have to persuade. He is rather the one who wants nothing other than to give us good things—though they might not always be what we want.
Can you see how this prayer rightly orders us? We must put God’s holy name first; we must strive to do his will in all things and at all times; we must be strengthened by spiritual food or we will fall; we must be agents of forgiveness; we must be able to withstand the dark powers.

Dear brothers and sisters,
I am very happy to be here to celebrate today’s Eucharist in this beautiful Cathedral. As you know, I was supposed to be here on 12 May, but the Holy Spirit worked in a different way. But I am truly pleased to be with you and in the spirit of fraternity and Christian joy, I greet all of you here present, His Eminence, as well as the Bishop of the Diocese, and the authorities present.
In this Mass, both the first reading and the Gospel invite us to reflect on hospitality, service and listening (cf. Gen 18:1-10; Lk 10:38-42).
First, God visits Abraham in the figure of “three men” who arrive at his tent “in the heat of the day” (cf. Gen 18:1-2). The scene is easy to imagine: the blazing sun, the stillness of the desert, the intense heat, and the three strangers seeking shelter. Abraham is seated “at the entrance of his tent,” the position of the master of the house, and it is moving to see how he exercises this role. Recognizing the presence of God in the visitors, he gets up, runs to greet them, and prostrates himself on the ground imploring them to stay. Thus the whole scene comes to life. The afternoon’s stillness is filled with gestures of love which involve not only the Patriarch, but also his wife Sarah and the servants. Abraham is no longer seated, but stands “by them under the tree” (Gen 18:8), and it is there that God gives him the best news he could have hoped for: “your wife Sarah shall have a son” (Gen 18:10).
The dynamics of this encounter lead us to reflect on how God chooses the path of hospitality in order to enter into the lives of Sarah and Abraham and announce that they would have a child, which they had long desired but had given up hope of receiving. Having visited them before in many moments of grace, God returns to knock on their door, asking for hospitality and trust. The elderly couple respond positively, despite not yet understanding what will happen. They recognize God’s blessing and his presence in the mysterious visitors, and offer them what they have: food, company, service and the shade of a tree. In return, they receive the promise of new life and descendants.
While the circumstances are different, the Gospel also teaches us about God’s way of acting. Here too, Jesus appears as a guest at the house of Martha and Mary. This time, however, he is not a stranger: he comes to his friends’ house in the midst of a festive atmosphere. One of the sisters welcomes him by serving him, while the other sits at his feet, listening as a disciple would her teacher. As we know, Jesus responds to the first sister’s complaints that she would like some help with the tasks at hand by inviting her to recognize the value of listening (cf. Lk 10:41-42).
It would be incorrect, however, to see these two attitudes as mutually exclusive, or to compare the merits of the two women. Service and listening are, in fact, twin dimensions of hospitality.

Starting July 21st, our organ will undergo a deep cleaning, wrapping up by August 14th. During that time, most 9:00AM Daily Masses will be in the chapel. Funerals and exceptions will be accommodated. Beginning around August 18th, the sanctuary carpet will be replaced with a new burgundy one and this should take about a week or so.
The IHM Parish Library cannot accept any donations of books at this time. We cannot accept books until the current collection is pared down. We have reached the limit of volumes that we can offer online. Please kindly take back your donations as we don't have the space to store these volumes. Thank you.

The generosity of the IHM family has been overwhelming and, as a result, the recent Midnight Runs have been a wonderful success!! Our next two Runs will be during the warmer weather and we are targeting the following to replenish our inventory:
- Men's jeans waist sizes 30-36 and all lengths;
- Sweatpants sized small, medium, large, and extra large;
- Men's sneakers sizes 9 thru 13;
- Women's sneakers sizes 7 thru 9;
- Men's tee and golf shirts, especially large and XL;
- Women's tee shirts mostly large and XL
- Men's shorts, waist sizes 30-38
- Women's shorts and joggers mostly large and XL
- Rain ponchos, baseball caps and backpacks
We are also grateful to receive packages of new/unopened underwear and socks for both men and women. In addition, small sizes of toiletry items such as shampoo, body wash, mouthwash, toothpaste, etc. are always needed!!

IHM Jubilee Parish Pilgrimage to Italy
October 9 - 18, 2025
Please reach out to the ProRome Tours directly if you are interested, have questions or would like to be a 'maybe'! We have over 27 and can go up to 40 people.
The itinerary features six nights in Rome and two nights in Assisi, with a day-trip to Loreto built in as well. Daily Mass – the cornerstone of each day – will be complemented by a rich Catholic touring program designed to bring the pilgrims face to face with the great saints, martyrs, miracles and cultural heritage of Roman Catholicism. Highlights include St. Peter’s Basilica, the Papal Basilicas, the Catacombs, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, the Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square and many incredible saints, churches, basilicas and holy sites throughout Italy.
Roundtrip airfare (see FAQ section below for more information) and beautiful four-star hotels have been arranged. A ProRome tour manager will accompany the group throughout the course of the trip, and private bus transportation, Catholic tour guides, all tours and tickets, daily breakfast and either daily lunch or dinner are included in the price.

- IHM High School of Religion (HSOR): HSOR will return in September! We offer a fun and relaxing faith community of service projects, Prayer & Pizza, Game Nights, sacraments, lively discussions and Open Gym. Come see why our students say HSOR “is a night out in the middle of the week!” High school students grades 9-12 are welcome. Prayer Groups:
- IHM Centering Prayer Group: The Centering Prayer Group meets on Wednesdays at 10:00AM in the Church Library. Newcomers are always welcome. Meetings last around 45-60 minutes. The format includes: 20 minutes of Centering Prayer (a silent prayer form in the Christian contemplative tradition in which we seek to open our minds and hearts to the Divine Life within), Lectio Divina (a prayerful reading of Scripture) and a brief discussion. - Charismatic Morning of Renewal Meeting at the House of Prayer: This group meets on Thursdays after the 9:00AM parish Mass - Morning Prayer, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with Intercessory Prayer and a discussion of the Scripture Readings for the coming Sunday.
- IHM Women's Prayer Group: The Prayer Group holds weekly prayer gatherings for women Thursdays from 7:00-8:00PM in the Church Library (or chapel in warmer months). For more information, please contact the Rectory (914-723-0276 or ihmchurch@ihmscarsdale.org).
Adult Faith Formation:
- IHM Bible Discussion Group: The IHM Bible Discussion Group has concluded the reading of the Book of Revelation and will resume the Scripture discussion group in the Fall. CLICK HERE for more details, to submit questions, or if you are interested in joining.
- IHM School of Community: This group meets on Wednesdays at 7:00PM in the IHM Rectory Conference Room to look at our daily life and discover who we are as Christians. The text discussed is "The Religious Sense" by Father Luigi Giussani. If you are interested in attending via Zoom, please contact the Rectory and ask to be put in contact with Carolyn of the School of Community.
Becoming Catholic & Catholics completing their Sacraments: The OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults - formerly RCIA) is a process of initiation into the Catholic Community of Faith for persons who are experiencing a conversion in their lives and seeking either Christian baptism in the Catholic Church or full Communion with the Catholic Church and completion of the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. Religious Education: On the day of your child's/children's Baptism, the Church pledged to you, the parents, our assistance in raising them in the practice of the faith to keep God's commandments as Jesus taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Here at Immaculate Heart of Mary, our Religious Education Program is part of this integral formation in the faith that would include daily prayer at home, family participation in Sunday Mass (and on Holy Days of Obligation), periodic Confession, and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy flowing out from your dinner table. The goal is to come to know Jesus in and through the Church, to know, understand and be able to explain our Catholic faith, and to live the life of Jesus through faith, hope and charity. School: Rooted in the mission Jesus Christ gave to the Church to go out to the world to preach, to sanctify and to shepherd souls, IHM School seeks to work with parents in forming their children in the faith and educating them for life in the world by faithfully and charitable teaching Jesus Christ and the two-fold command to love God and our neighbor, to immerse the students in the sacramental life of the Church so that they may know of God's presence in their lives and come to unite their lives for the glory of God, and to help lead and guide them on their journey through life to heaven by building up the virtues our faith has received from the Apostles. Social Ministries: IHM parish is involved in many social ministries, including Midnight Runs into Manhattan to bring food and clothing to the homeless; a food pantry and support of HOPE Community Services; annual Christmas Giving Tree, Baby Shower donations, support of mothers in crisis pregnancies, and bereavement assistance, among other needs. - Catholic Widows and Widowers of Yonkers Annual Communion Breakfast will be held on Sunday, September 21st. Mass at 10AM, Immaculate Conception Church, (53 Winter Hill Rd, Tuckahoe), followed by brunch at San Martino’s Ristorante, 12 Young Ave, Yonkers. Cash $36 per person payable at the brunch. - Mall Walking is Back! The Mall Walking Club meets every Tuesdays and Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at The Westchester in White Plains. It's a great way to exercise no matter what the weather is outside. Go at your own pace or get motivated by joining an inspiring group of people who've grown the program into a small community. Walk on either carpeted or tile flooring and maybe share a story or two. To join, sign up at the Parks table, next to the horse fountain on retail level 2 (located between Crate & Barrel and Urban Outfitters) on Tuesday and Friday mornings during the program. Admission and parking* are free for all registered members of the mall walk program. *Registered Mall Walkers enjoy free parking from 8 a.m. - noon on Tuesdays and Fridays.(Participants must check-in at the Parks table, or sign-up, if this is your first time at the Mall Walk, each time you attend for free parking. )For more information, call (914) 231-4539.
- Catholic Engaged Encounter marriage preparation: Know a couple planning to get married and want them to start off with a strong foundation? Refer engaged couples to Catholic Engaged Encounter of Lower Hudson Valley for their pre-cana marriage prep weekend. For over 50 years, we have been preparing couples for the Sacrament of Matrimony and giving them the tools for a healthy and successful marriage. Catholic Engaged Encounter (CEE) is endorsed and approved by the Catholic Church from the Vatican to dioceses and local parishes worldwide. CEE weekends are a wonderful gift for engaged couples.
