My dear friends,
I hope you’re enjoying a joyful and relaxing Fourth of July weekend. As we celebrate our freedoms, may we also pray for peace and those who protect our nation.
You may have noticed some landscaping work at our school on Post Road this past week. Thanks to your generosity on Giving Day in May, we were able to create an outdoor classroom space for students to enjoy this fall! Special thanks to Gianni Porco for guiding us through the permit process and to Mario Forgione Landscaping for their great work!
There’s still time to join our October pilgrimage to Rome that I will be leading. We have over 25 and can grow up to 40. The pilgrimage promises to be a wonderful journey!
Thank you for helping us not only meet but exceed our 2025 Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal goal for 2025! Every gift matters. Sixty percent of funds raised over the goal come back to the parish, and increased household participation strengthens our efforts. A number of households choose to give later in the year—thank you in advance.
Starting July 21, our organ will undergo a deep cleaning, wrapping up by August 14th. During that time, most 9:00 a.m. Daily Masses will be in the chapel. Funerals and exceptions will be accommodated. Beginning around August 18, the sanctuary carpet will be replaced with a new burgundy one and this should take about a week or so.
In preparing for this pastoral transition, I’ve followed my predecessor, Father Thomas Lynch’s model—leaving a full, experienced parish council in place. With help from the nominating committee, we were able to fill all open seats, make use of the Pastor's discretion to make nominations, so as to ensure continuity for Fr. Ries. It was my decision, given the transition, that the Chair and Vice-Chairs remain at this time. I believe this will assist Fr. Ries while he gets established at IHM and then he will be able to benefit from the updated council bylaws during next year's term.
This is my final weekend celebrating Mass with you before I conclude my time on site at IHM next Saturday, July 12th with the 8:30am Mass. From there I will head to a priest conference and take some family time before beginning my new role at the seminary in August. Over the weeks of July in this article, I’ll offer brief reflections on the sacraments, beginning with Baptism.
This weekend, I’ll be celebrating the 5:30 p.m. Vigil and 10:00 a.m. Sunday Masses. Fr. Thumma has the 8:00 a.m., and Fr. Raja the 12 noon.
Thank you for the love and support you’ve shown me these past years. Enjoy the weekend and may God continue to bless this parish.
-Fr. Luke
BAPTISM
Baptism is a joyful beginning, and it’s wise for parents to begin planning early—even before birth. If the baptism is to be held at another parish, it’s thoughtful to inform us. We can gladly send a note to the other parish affirming our support.
It’s also prudent to reach out to potential godparents early. All a person needs is one sponsor, but if there are the usual two, one is the godfather and the other the godmother. At least one must be a practicing Catholic, and sometimes, being asked is the very nudge someone needs to return to Confession, Mass, and the sacraments, making obtaining their "Sponsor Certificate" seamless to obtain. If a godparent is not fully initiated, our Adult Confirmation Program (just a few months long) is available. This can also be an opportunity for a couple to have a marriage blessed or register in their parish.
If the family would like someone, who has never been Catholic, to serve as a Christian witness as part of the godparent pair, we’ll need a baptismal certificate of their Trinitarian Baptism from that person's church community.
Celebrating a baptism is a moment for all of us to recall the grace of our own, and if that grace needs renewing, we turn to Confession—our second baptism.
