My dear friends,
May this Memorial Day Weekend allow us a chance to offer prayers of gratitude and eternal repose to all who served our country and sacrificed their lives so that we could live in freedom, particularly the freedom to practice our faith.
This past Thursday at Cardinal Hayes High School on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx (whose motto is "For God and Country"), one of IHM's faithful parishioners, William "Bill" Lessa, was honored with Mass and a luncheon for his 53 years of service to Hayes as a teacher, counselor and principal. Bill's commitment to generations of young men through Catholic education, the support of his wife Mary Ann and family, and his active faith and service to the Church is a true blessing! What an honor it is to have a persevering and joyful witness among us! Congratulations on your upcoming and well-deserved retirement, Principal Lessa!
This morning Seminarian Ian Mendoza and I are headed to St. Patrick's Cathedral for the ordination of three new priests.
His Eminence has asked us to offer names for consideration of potential priestly vocations. Cards are still available at the church entrances—please drop completed ones into the collection or hand them to a priest!
I believe Lectio Divina will continue this Tuesday, May 27th at 7:00 p.m. in the lower church, reflecting on next Sunday’s readings—join us for this prayerful time to read and pray the Scriptures.
This past Wednesday our HSOR (high school youth ministry) held graduation for the seniors. HSOR is an important part of IHM to keep our high schoolers connected to Christ, the Church and with one another. Nancy Vericker, the coordinator, has a gift speaking personally about each one at graduation as well as inspiring the youth in their Catholic identity. I am grateful to those who assist Nancy: Elise, Ray, Mike & Ian! Congratulations to the graduates and the families of our seniors!
Please pray for our young women and men who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Bonnici this Friday! May it be a moment of deep realization of the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives, blessings upon their families, and may it foster a deep desire with the courage to witness to the Risen Jesus Christ through Sunday Mass and active participation in the life of IHM. Come Holy Spirit - fill the hearts of your faithful!
This week is Ascension Thursday - a Hoy Day of Obligation. Mass schedule is below!
The October Rome pilgrimage with me is still a go!
Following the Vigil Mass on June 21st, IHM is planning a Eucharistic Procession celebrating the Solemnity of the Lord Jesus' Sacred Body and Blood. Stay tuned!
Also coming up, we will have once again a Parish Goodwill Tag Sale on June 7th & 8th in the lower church to support those in need through our Social Ministries. Coffee and donuts will be served after the 9am and 10:30am Masses. Thank you for your ongoing donations!
Save the date - June 22 at Lake Isle, where we will have an afternoon parish celebration with brunch that will give me an opportunity to express my gratitude to you on being part of a great parish community here at IHM before I depart to assume the responsibilities of Vice Rector of Saint Joseph's Seminary Dunwoodie in Yonkers this summer.
We also will be able to bid farewell to Sister Theresa Chen, who is graduating from Fordham University today after studying spiritual direction and will be heading back to her community on July 15th.
Seminarian Ian Mendoza, who is completing his pastoral year at IHM this July 16th, will be preparing to return to his studies for his last two years of theology before (God-willing!) priestly ordination.
Sister Nancy Keller, whose 80th birthday fell during the lockdown in 2020, is turning 85 this June, and we will want to celebrate with her!
This weekend’s Mass schedule:
I will offer the 5:30pm Vigil, as well as the 9:00 a.m. Family and 12 Noon Masses.
Fr. Thumma will offer the 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses, and lead the Children’s Liturgy in the lower church.
A blessed Sunday to you!
