I’m filled with joy as we celebrate First Holy Communions this Saturday and next from both our school and religious education programs. What a beautiful milestone as our young people receive Jesus in the Eucharist! With the support of their families, may this become a weekly nourishment in both Word and Sacrament. Please remember: First Communicants should wear their special outfits to Sunday Mass this weekend and next, to participate in the May Crownings during the Offertory.
The recent pilgrimage to Rome that I was invited to assist with (tours etc.) for the Jubilee Year was unforgettable and providential—especially being present for the funeral of Pope Francis. Through Cardinal Dolan, we were able to attend his wake and later visit his grave to pray for the repose of his soul. A book of condolences is available at IHM through Sunday near his image in church for your names, prayer intentions and expressions of sympathies. It will be sent to the Apostolic Nunciature on behalf of our parish.

I wanted first to get back from seeing things overseas before making our October Parish Pilgrimage public (the late timing is on me). Here is the website with all the details and information. We will cap it at 40 people, and it is my plan to keep it to parishioners. Know that there is a good deal of walking and the Roman sidewalks are not always smooth. On a more serious note, the New York State Assembly has passed an assisted suicide bill now heading to the Senate. Let us pray—and also act—by reaching out to our representatives to promote a culture of life, especially for those nearing the end of their earthly journey.

What is the Parish Council?
The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Council serves as a consultative body of the parish whose responsibility is to advise and assist the pastor in matters relating to the parish. This includes promoting lay participation in the activities of the parish, evaluating the goals and needs of the parish, developing and recommending ways to address those needs, and finally developing and maintaining a two-way communication between the Council and the larger Parish community. Council members will also be expected to take a leadership role in the various Parish Council events as well as in the particular area of Parish life they are interested in or involved in already.

Sunday, May 4, 2025 | Third Sunday of Easter| John 21:1–19
Friends, we must attend to the mystical depth of today’s Gospel. At the break of dawn, the disciples spy a mysterious figure on the distant shore who shouts out to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” When they answer in the negative, he instructs them to cast the net over the right side of the ship. When they do, they bring in a huge catch of fish.
This fishing expedition is a symbol of the Church (the barque of Peter), across space and time, at its apostolic task of seeking souls. The life and work of the Church, John seems to be telling us, will be a lengthy, twilight struggle, a hard toil that will often seem to bear little or no fruit. But after the long night, the dawn of a new life and a new order will break, the transfigured world inaugurated by Jesus. The catch of fish that he makes possible is the totality of people that Christ will gather to himself; it is the new Israel, the eschatological Church.
We know this through a subtle bit of symbolism. When the fish are dragged ashore, John bothers to tell us their exact number, 153—a figure commonly taken in the ancient world to signify the total number of species of fish in the sea.

- Pick up an adorable baby bottle after any Mass next weekend May 10 & 11
- Fill it with love by donating spare coins, dollars or donations
- Return your filled bottle to the church on June 15 & 16 after any Mass

Dear Friends in Christ,
Today I am announcing a special Called by Name Campaign to identify young men in our archdiocese who, through God's providence, could have a vocation to the priesthood. The campaign will take place on May 10-11, 2025.
As you know, our archdiocese has a great need for "more workers for the harvest." I firmly believe that our future priests will come from our own parishes and schools, but we need the entire Church to identify them, so that we can accompany them as the discern their vocations.
I invite all Catholics to submit the names of young men that they would like to honor. Note that these men do not need to have expressed a desire to be priests. They simply need to love Christ and the Church, exhibit a strong faith, and have a heart for service.
I will send each one of these young men a letter of congratulations and encouragement, as well as invite them to a special dinner in the summer. In addition, our vocation team will offer support as them discern their vocations, especially by inviting them to join small "discernment groups" and attend various events.
This initiative is near to my heart, and I ask you to participate thoughtfully. And please join me in praying that the Lord will raise up many new shepherds for the Church!

Golden Wedding Jubilee Mass
Couples celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary anytime during 2025 are invited to attend the Golden Wedding Jubilee Mass with Cardinal Dolan at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, June 1st at 2:30PM. Each couple may bring up to four (4) additional guests. Pre-registration is required. All who wish to attend must contact your parish secretary to register. The closing date to register for the Mass is Monday, May 12th at 5:00PM.

Prayer Groups:
- IHM Centering Prayer Group: The Centering Prayer Group meets on Wednesdays at 10:00AM in the Church Library. Newcomers are always welcome. Meetings last around 45-60 minutes. The format includes: 20 minutes of Centering Prayer (a silent prayer form in the Christian contemplative tradition in which we seek to open our minds and hearts to the Divine Life within), Lectio Divina (a prayerful reading of Scripture) and a brief discussion. - Charismatic Morning of Renewal Meeting at the House of Prayer: This group meets on Thursdays after the 9:00AM parish Mass - Morning Prayer, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with Intercessory Prayer and a discussion of the Scripture Readings for the coming Sunday.

Adult Faith Formation:
- IHM Bible Discussion Group: The IHM Bible Discussion Group is reading the Book of Revelation. This may be a good Lenten practice on Tuesday evenings at 7:00PM in the lower church, ending at 8:30PM. We discuss two chapters from the Apocalypse of John every Tuesday until we finish the 22 chapters in May. Next gathering is April 22nd. - IHM School of Community: This group meets on Wednesdays at 7:00PM in the IHM Rectory Conference Room to look at our daily life and discover who we are as Christians. The text discussed is "The Religious Sense" by Father Luigi Giussani. Becoming Catholic & Catholics completing their Sacraments: The OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults - formerly RCIA) is a process of initiation into the Catholic Community of Faith for persons who are experiencing a conversion in their lives and seeking either Christian baptism in the Catholic Church or full Communion with the Catholic Church and completion of the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. Religious Education: On the day of your child's/children's Baptism, the Church pledged to you, the parents, our assistance in raising them in the practice of the faith to keep God's commandments as Jesus taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Here at Immaculate Heart of Mary, our Religious Education Program is part of this integral formation in the faith that would include daily prayer at home, family participation in Sunday Mass (and on Holy Days of Obligation), periodic Confession, and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy flowing out from your dinner table. The goal is to come to know Jesus in and through the Church, to know, understand and be able to explain our Catholic faith, and to live the life of Jesus through faith, hope and charity. - Church of St. Pius X Bereavement Support Group: Are you grieving the loss of a loved one? The Church of St. Pius X is offering a six session, scripture-based series for those in mourning. We gather with others in a small group setting and share in God’s love and healing. Our discussions explore our personal journeys of mourning through useful and relevant tools, discussion topics, scripture, prayer, reflection, and faith sharing. ALL are welcome, no matter where you are on your journey.
The spring series begins on Wednesday, May 7th, and will meet for six Wednesdays through June 11th, 6:30 – 8PM. Pre-registration is required and the size of the group is limited. Due to the very personal sharing of this experience, all participants are required to register prior to April 30th. No one will be admitted to the program after that date. This free program uses radio-frequency technology to find seniors who wander and safely return them home. - ArchCare Dementia Care Connect (GUIDE) No-cost support for those with Dementia and their Caregivers. GUIDE, Guiding an improved Dementia Experience Model, is a nationwide care navigation program supporting Medicare beneficiaries with a dementia diagnosis and their unpaid caregivers who are typically family members. This no-cost program provides care navigation, assessment, person-oriented care plan, helps people access services like meals, transportation, and home health aides, respite services and education for caregivers, and access to a help line.
