As we enter into the silence of Holy Saturday, we prepare our hearts for the joy of the Resurrection. Tonight at the Easter Vigil and again tomorrow on Easter Sunday, we celebrate Christ’s victory over death—a joy that continues throughout the Octave of Easter, eight full days of rejoicing in the Risen Lord!
Thank you to all who are making this Holy Week so beautiful. From Fr. Thumma, our staff and volunteers, to the choir under the direction of Dr. Laurie Adamo with our cantor Elizabeth Farnum, the lectors, altar servers, extraordinary ministers, ushers, the St. Veronica Guild Flower contingent, our maintenance and cleaning staff, and all who participated—your dedication is helping make these Sacred Liturgies beautiful and prayerful experiences.
Thank you as well to those who prayed for the graces of Reconciliation Monday. It is always such a blessing for a our parish and the Church in this New York area. To all who supported our parish’s participation in the Chrism Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, know that it was a joy to see so many of our 8th-grade Confirmation candidates and parishioners present as Fr. Thumma and I renewed our priestly promises.
Looking ahead, the Archdiocese will soon launch the Called by Name vocations initiative to encourage priestly vocations. We’ll be inviting you to prayerfully consider young men who may have a call to the priesthood.
Families who have celebrated recent baptisms the past few years: our school and religious education program will be reaching out to share opportunities for continued faith formation. Please also support our Parish School’s Giving Day on Friday, May 9th.
Next Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday with 2pm Confessions and a Holy Hour at 3pm - the Hour of Mercy when Jesus died on the Cross. I also invite the men of our parish to consider attending the men’s retreat at the Marian Shrine that same weekend—details are below.

What is the Parish Council?
The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Council serves as a consultative body of the parish whose responsibility is to advise and assist the pastor in matters relating to the parish. This includes promoting lay participation in the activities of the parish, evaluating the goals and needs of the parish, developing and recommending ways to address those needs, and finally developing and maintaining a two-way communication between the Council and the larger Parish community. Council members will also be expected to take a leadership role in the various Parish Council events as well as in the particular area of Parish life they are interested in or involved in already.

The IHM Religious Education students had a wonderful time celebrating Easter! The afternoon began with a creative Easter arts and craft project, followed by a lively game of Easter bingo. Seminarian Ian Mendoza then read an Easter story, bringing the spirit of the season to life. The students enjoyed watching an Easter movie before wrapping up the day with an exciting Easter egg hunt. Fun was had by all, and it was a joyful celebration of the holiday!
On behalf of the Religious Education Office, we wish everyone a Blessed Easter. May the risen Lord renew our faith and fill our hearts with hope, peace, and joy.
Sunday, April 20, 2025 | The Resurrection of the Lord| John 20:1-9
Friends, our Easter Gospel contains St. John’s magnificent account of the Resurrection. It was, says John, early in the morning on the first day of the week. It was still dark—just the way it was at the beginning of time before God said “Let there be light.” But a light was about to shine, and a new creation was about to appear.
The stone had been rolled away. That stone, blocking entrance to the tomb of Jesus, stands for the finality of death. When someone that we love dies, it is as though a great stone is rolled across them, permanently blocking our access to them. And this is why we weep at death—not just in grief but in a kind of existential frustration.
But for Jesus, the stone had been rolled away. Undoubtedly, the first disciples must have thought a grave robber had been at work. But the wonderful Johannine irony is that the greatest of grave robbers had indeed been at work. The Lord says to the prophet Ezekiel, “I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves.”
What was dreamed about, what endured as a hope against hope, has become a reality. God has opened the grave of his Son, and the bonds of death have been shattered forever.

Golden Wedding Jubilee Mass
Couples celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary anytime during 2025 are invited to attend the Golden Wedding Jubilee Mass with Cardinal Dolan at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, June 1st at 2:30PM. Each couple may bring up to four (4) additional guests. Pre-registration is required. All who wish to attend must contact your parish secretary to register. The closing date to register for the Mass is Monday, May 12th at 5:00PM.
Please note that there is no HOPE Soup Kitchen on Friday, April 18th (Good Friday). HOPE is going to provide the Easter Dinner meals for Friday, April 18th. Happy Easter to all and thank you for all you do!

Dear IHM,
My name is Rachel and I am a coordinator at HOPE. I am looking for volunteers to cook/serve breakfast on Wednesday and Thursday mornings to be served at 9:00AM. Volunteers should plan to be here 8:00-9:30AM. They will be making pancakes or preparing frozen waffles. We have special programming running for the homeless clients Wednesday and Thursday mornings starting this week 3/19 for three months through 6/19 and will be offering them a special breakfast on those days. We will need four volunteers a day. If any volunteers who would like to sign up for the following dates please let me know!

- IHM Centering Prayer Group: The Centering Prayer Group meets on Wednesdays at 10:00AM in the Church Library. Newcomers are always welcome. Meetings last around 45-60 minutes. The format includes: 20 minutes of Centering Prayer (a silent prayer form in the Christian contemplative tradition in which we seek to open our minds and hearts to the Divine Life within), Lectio Divina (a prayerful reading of Scripture) and a brief discussion. - Charismatic Morning of Renewal Meeting at the House of Prayer: This group meets on Thursdays after the 9:00AM parish Mass - Morning Prayer, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with Intercessory Prayer and a discussion of the Scripture Readings for the coming Sunday.

Adult Faith Formation:
- IHM Bible Discussion Group: The IHM Bible Discussion Group is reading the Book of Revelation. This may be a good Lenten practice on Tuesday evenings at 7:00PM in the lower church, ending at 8:30PM. We discuss two chapters from the Apocalypse of John every Tuesday until we finish the 22 chapters in May. Next gathering is April 22nd. - IHM School of Community: This group meets on Wednesdays at 7:00PM in the IHM Rectory Conference Room to look at our daily life and discover who we are as Christians. The text discussed is "The Religious Sense" by Father Luigi Giussani. Becoming Catholic & Catholics completing their Sacraments: The OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults - formerly RCIA) is a process of initiation into the Catholic Community of Faith for persons who are experiencing a conversion in their lives and seeking either Christian baptism in the Catholic Church or full Communion with the Catholic Church and completion of the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. Religious Education: On the day of your child's/children's Baptism, the Church pledged to you, the parents, our assistance in raising them in the practice of the faith to keep God's commandments as Jesus taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Here at Immaculate Heart of Mary, our Religious Education Program is part of this integral formation in the faith that would include daily prayer at home, family participation in Sunday Mass (and on Holy Days of Obligation), periodic Confession, and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy flowing out from your dinner table. The goal is to come to know Jesus in and through the Church, to know, understand and be able to explain our Catholic faith, and to live the life of Jesus through faith, hope and charity.
