A blessed Rejoicing Sunday of Advent - Gaudete Sunday - as we celebrate that Christmas is almost here!
Once again last night IHM sponsored Handel's Messiah in a sing-along concert fashion featuring the Modus Operandi Orchestra (MOO) under the direction of Maestro Justin Bischof. It was a spectacular evening with amazing soloists and a chorus. It was a bigger turnout than last year and I am grateful to our IHM Music Director, Dr. Laurie Adamo, for playing the harpsichord and the organ, and bringing this Manhattan level experience back to IHM - What a beautiful preparation for Christmas!

Yesterday and today will be filled with pre-Christmas activity - the IHM's School Annual Christmas Fair was yesterday (thank you to Mei Riccardulli and the Home School Association Board and parents in conjunction with Mrs. Keelin for countless hours of set-up, running and taking down everything. What an amazing experience and tradition for our students!
This morning we are expecting a full house at Breakfast with Santa in the lower church!
Monday is a special day in Advent throughout all the parishes of the Archdiocese of New York (Westchester, Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster and Sullivan Counties). It is Reconciliation Monday. Parishes are to provide the Sacrament of Confession from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Fr. Thumma and I here at IHM will offer this Sacrament of Mercy on Monday from 2-3:30pm and 7-9pm since our Religious Education Program will be having two Christmas Pageants in between. This is a graced-filled time to come here or to another parish to prepare your hearts and souls for Jesus at Christmas. In particular, if you have missed Mass for a less than serious reason, such as health, it is good to Confess so to receive the Eucharist in a state of grace and with the peace and joy of the Lord.
Ever misplaced something? Left it at church? IHM's Lost and Found is located in the old baptistry (off the ramp entrance on the Carman Road side of the church).
Items of greater value? Ask at the rectory or a priest.
As I mentioned in the Pastor's flocknote of yesterday, after acquiring the basic elements of a bigger Nativity Scene for last Christmas, IHM was able to obtain the full set with shepherds, the Magi and entourage. Except for the Baby Jesus, it is all up in the church for viewing; perhaps some may wish to memorialize a figure or a group. Please call our parish business manager, Liz Reyes, at the rectory during the week for specific offerings (914-723-0276).

At all Masses next week, the Fourth Sunday of Advent (December 21/22), we will bless any figures of the Baby Jesus you may bring before you place Him in the Manger and Nativity Scenes at your homes on Christmas. Please make a note to bring them to Mass next weekend!
This Sunday, Msgr. Sweeney will celebrate the 5:30pm Saturday Vigil and the 7:30am and 10:30am Masses. Fr. Thumma will offer the 9:00am and the 12:00 noon Masses. The Nicholson's will be offering Coffee and Donuts after the 9am Sunday Mass this weekend. There will also be Cocoa and Carols at this time!

What is the Parish Council?
The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Council serves as a consultative body of the parish whose responsibility is to advise and assist the pastor in matters relating to the parish. This includes promoting lay participation in the activities of the parish, evaluating the goals and needs of the parish, developing and recommending ways to address those needs, and finally developing and maintaining a two-way communication between the Council and the larger Parish community. Council members will also be expected to take a leadership role in the various Parish Council events as well as in the particular area of Parish life they are interested in or involved in already.

Friends, like those in the time of John the Baptist, we ask: “What should we do?” How should we live our lives?
This question, of course, tells us something else about repentance: that it has to do with action more than simply changing our minds. The spiritual life is, finally, a set of behaviors.
So what does John the Baptist tell us to do? His first recommendation is this: “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none.” This is so basic, so elemental—yet so almost thoroughly ignored! In the Church’s social teaching, we find a constant reminder that although private property is a social good, the use of our private property must always have a social orientation.
An early Church Father, St. Basil the Great, expressed the idea in tones that echo John the Baptist: “The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry. The cloak in your wardrobe belongs to the naked. The shoes you allow to rot belong to the barefoot. The money in your vaults belongs to the destitute. You do injustice to every man whom you could help but do not.”
So what should we do this Advent, we who seek repentance, we who await the coming of the Messiah? Serve justice, render to each his due, and give to those who are in need.

HOPE Community Soup Kitchen: Needs Your Help!
We are looking for more volunteers to cook for the HOPE Community Supper Program. The need is greater than ever. Cooking is done at home and delivered to the Church, it is then picked up and delivered to HOPE Community Services in New Rochelle (www.hopecommunityservices.org).

2024 Public Square Rosary Rally
You are invited to the 2024 Public Square Rosary Rally on Saturday, December 21st 12:00 noon. The Rosary Rally will take place in Our Lady's Chapel. This year as we pray Our Lady’s Rosary and other prayers in her honor, we invoke her blessings on marriage and the family, our country and the world, and especially for Peace as we await the birth of Our Savior Jesus Christ. Library Update
Now that the Parish Library has been catalogued, it is much easier to access and borrow books, DVD’s and other resources. The library also has an extensive Children’s section, that many parishioners may access as well.
The next step is to have access to the library open at convenient times to allow browsing to borrow the available volumes. The plan is to have the library open on Sunday morning from 9 to noon, on one or two days during the week after the 9 AM Mass to 11 AM, and perhaps one evening. Currently, there are volunteers for the
Sunday time slot. The staff is looking for volunteers for the other times as well. If you are interested in participating in this endeavor, please email the library at ihmllibrary@ihmscarsdale.org. Thank you for your interest!

Holy Communion for those with Gluten Sensitivities
For any who have sensitivities to Gluten, know that Low Gluten hosts (containing less than 0.002% gluten, <20ppm, fully in accord with Church Canon Law) are available for receiving our Lord in Holy Communion. For those unable to have any gluten, we are happy to offer Holy Communion from a separate Chalice. Please speak with a priest before Mass.

- IHM Centering Prayer Group: The Centering Prayer Group meets on Wednesdays at 10:00AM in the Church Library. Newcomers are always welcome. Meetings last around 45-60 minutes. The format includes: 20 minutes of Centering Prayer (a silent prayer form in the Christian contemplative tradition in which we seek to open our minds and hearts to the Divine Life within), Lectio Divina (a prayerful reading of Scripture) and a brief discussion. - Charismatic Morning of Renewal Meeting at the House of Prayer: This group meets on Thursdays after the 9:00AM parish Mass - Morning Prayer, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with Intercessory Prayer and a discussion of the Scripture Readings for the coming Sunday.

Adult Faith Formation:
- IHM Bible Discussion Group: The IHM Bible Discussion Group continues its study of the Old Testament Book of Exodus Tuesday evenings at 7:00PM in the lower church, ending at 8:30PM. We will continue most Tuesdays until late Spring 2025 discussing one or two chapters an evening depending on their length. Refreshments are served for the convenience of the participants. - IHM School of Community: This group meets on Wednesdays at 7:00PM in the IHM Rectory Conference Room to look at our daily life and discover who we are as Christians. Becoming Catholic & Catholics completing their Sacraments: The OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults - formerly RCIA) is a process of initiation into the Catholic Community of Faith for persons who are experiencing a conversion in their lives and seeking either Christian baptism in the Catholic Church or full Communion with the Catholic Church and completion of the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.
