As a parish dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, if you have not yet heard, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has written an important teaching document (called an encyclical) on the Sacred Heart of Jesus this past Thursday! I am sure that it will make fruitful spiritual reading for us all.
To our Parish Council Chair, Carolyn Giannelli, for the wonderful idea and for spear-heading the Fall Harvest Festival in our north (school) parking lot last week - thank you! To all who assisted you from parish council members, the school, religious ed and in particular, the Girl Scouts - you made it possible! From the hay maze and pumpkin patch, to the cider and donut truck, to having an alpaca walked around the lot followed by lambs and goats, as well as a pony, chickens, 3 day-old hamsters and a baby pig, to the Captain Lawrence trucks - it was a great beginning to perhaps a new tradition at IHM!
With Early Voting in our State now open, A reminder that our New York State Bishops have expressed three grave concerns over the ERA Proposition 1 that would enshrine abortion in the State Constitution, allow children to make life-altering medical decisions without parental consent and loosen appropriate age-related restrictions. More information is below.

Next Saturday, November 2 following the 5:30pm Vigil and Sunday, November 3 following all Sunday Masses, the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be offered to all eligible parishioners. While Fr. Thumma and I are available to visit with people in their homes or in the rectory, this may provide a chance for more to make use of this grace. For instance, those who are preparing for surgery, those who are facing a serious illness, those who have chronic illnesses and those who are weighed down by the burden of years. Since Anointing involves the forgiveness of sins - healing of soul and body, if a person needs to get to Confession, we suggest doing so prior to the Anointing.
This First Friday (All Saints Day) evening into First Saturday morning (All Souls Day), IHM will have an all night Eucharistic Exposition/Adoration to pray for our Country right before the November 5th election.
8pm-10pm will be silent prayer, and then from 10am to 5pm each hour will start off with a special prayer for about 20 minutes followed by time for quiet reflection. Adoration will conclude with benediction at 7:30am before 8am Confessions.
Operation Cornerstone is ramping back up for action and to support our troops serving abroad for the holidays. To all of the Social Ministries and service outreach that is done through the parish, IHM School and through the Confirmation students of the Religious Education Program - what a blessing it is!

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception will be transferred to the Monday since Sunday is Advent. For a long time we have operated under the rule that when a holy day of obligation is transferred, the obligation does not go with it. The Vatican has recently clarified it with our US Catholic Bishops by stating that the obligation does indeed transfer. We will look to add two Masses or so for all to fulfill their obligation.

Friends, today in the Gospel passage, we see Jesus’ mercy toward the blind man as a hallmark of his ministry. Jesus comes as healer, savior, inaugurator of the kingdom. He is the embodiment of hope. Jesus wanted to connect human suffering to the very source of life and health. The energy of God pours through him to the needy.

Thousands take part in New York City Eucharistic procession

New Yorkers on Oct. 15 gathered in droves within the vaulted ceilings of one of New York City’s most famous churches, St. Patrick Cathedral, many from New York City and others driving in from nearby Long Island, New Jersey, and Westchester County before spilling out into the streets for a Eucharistic procession.
Organized by the California-based Napa Institute, officials estimated that 3,500 people gathered for a Holy Hour and rosary with New York City Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Espaillat as well as Mass with Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City and homilist Monsignor James Shea, president of the University of Mary in North Dakota.
Afterward the congregation filed out into Midtown Manhattan for a procession that took Jesus in the Eucharist past Radio City Music Hall and into Times Square and surrounding areas.
This was the fifth annual Eucharistic procession in New York City organized by the Napa Institute, a Catholic leadership organization.

We are looking for more volunteers to cook for the HOPE Community Supper Program. The need is greater than ever. Cooking is done at home and delivered to the Church, it is then picked up and delivered to HOPE Community Services in New Rochelle (www.hopecommunityservices.org).

Operation Cornerstone - Bringing a little comfort to our troops
Operation Cornerstone will be collecting food items, toiletries and sundries to send to our soldiers who are serving overseas and will not be home for the holidays. We will be partnering with United For The Troops again this year, who will pick up the donations from IHM, they will then package and mail the boxes to the troops. Any monetary donations to help defray the cost of mailing the packages can be left at the rectory.
Suggested donations are:
Food: Pringles (snack size), Trail Mix, instant oatmeal, granola bars, store bought cookies, crackers, power bars, nuts, Slim Jims, Beef Jerky, Pop Tarts, Easy Mac Microwave Cups, ramen noodles, tuna fish, canned chicken, spam, sardines, peanut butter (plastic only), jelly & jam (plastic only), cereals (individual size), chili, stew, pasta, soup, canned fruit (16 oz or smaller), gum & Lifesavers, coffee & filters, hot chocolate packets, tea bags, drink mixes (single serve).
Toiletries: Foot powder, feminine hygiene products, hand sanitizers, baby wipes, ChapStick & lip balm, cough drops, Tums, Rolaids, eye drops, disposable razors, shave cream (non aerosol), toothbrushes & toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash, shampoo, eyeglass cleaning wipes, skin moisturizer, deodorant, bars of soap, body wash, Q-tips, nail clippers, files, hair brushes and combs, hair clips, ties and bands.
Sundries:: Undershirts, boxers, crew socks, playing cards and dominoes, travel games, stress balls, crossword puzzles, word search, Sudoku, comic books, air fresheners (hanging car type), hand warmers, dryer sheets, Zip-loc bags (gallon and quart size).
Letters of Support: Service men and women love receiving cards and letters of support.

- IHM Centering Prayer Group: The Centering Prayer Group meets on Wednesdays at 10:00AM in the Church Library. Newcomers are always welcome. Meetings last around 45-60 minutes. The format includes: 20 minutes of Centering Prayer (a silent prayer form in the Christian contemplative tradition in which we seek to open our minds and hearts to the Divine Life within), Lectio Divina (a prayerful reading of Scripture) and a brief discussion. - IHM Bible Discussion Group: The IHM Bible Discussion Group continues its study of the Old Testament Book of Exodus Tuesday evenings at 7:00PM in the lower church, ending at 8:30PM. - One Nation Under God Prayer Walk - On Saturday October 26th there is going to be a One Nation Under God Prayer Walk through the Rivertowns: St. Matthew in Hastings to St. Teresa in Sleepy Hollow. It will begin at 11:00 AM starting from Immaculate Conception Church in Irvington and finish at Transfiguration Church in Tarrytown. We are coming together, in the Holy Name of Jesus, united in our Catholic faith, not our political preferences. Praying to Our Father with the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary for peace, a fair and just election and that whatever the outcome, we will stand united in our faith, trusting in God’s will for all his people and our nation.
