If you have not been to the Sacrament of Baptism in some time, you may have forgotten that the "Ephphatha" is spoken after the infant or child is baptized connecting it to Jesus' miracle in this Sunday's Gospel. Why is it done? Jesus' divine power has the ability through Baptism to open our ears to hear the Word of God and our mouths to proclaim the praises of Almighty God! We see it realized at each Mass!
Please join me this Sunday in wishing Sister Nancy and Sister Rose, New York Sisters of Charity here at IHM's House of Prayer, a happy and holy anniversary of their religious lives! We are blessed to have consecrated religious sisters living with us. Theirs is a beautiful gift of God to the Church to help us live out more deeply our baptismal grace!
It is exciting to see our students and families, teachers, aides and staff begin this new school year! Thank you to our principal, Mrs. Tracy Keelin, and her team for all the hard work and dedication they have put in to welcoming back our students and to welcome new students and families to our parish school!
This Sunday IHM will celebrate Catechetical Sunday at the 9:00 AM Mass where I will bless our Catechists who by their lives, faith and teaching will help our parish parents hand on the Catholic faith to their children. Mrs. Laura Covais and her staff have been working diligently to prepare for this new year and it was wonderful to see so many returning catechists (and some new ones!) for their preparation sessions the past two weeks! Classes begin this upcoming week!
Once again on September 11th we have the sacred duty to remember the horrific attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the flight that was brought down in Pennsylvania. May we never forget the deep loss, especially in our own New York community, and also the heroic sacrifice of the firefighters, first responders and those men and women who have and are serving in our military. As we pray for the families, colleagues and friends who lost loved ones, we remember the victims of that day, as well as those who succumbed to illnesses from Ground Zero and those who gave their lives in service to our country. For all who continue to bear the wounds in body, mind and soul from the disturbing acts of terrorism of 9/11 and the wars that followed, may we encourage, pray and support the victims and heroes. And may our Lord grant us healing and peace to all, and deep reverence for the sacrifices shown in response to such evil.

There are Scouts for boys and Girl Scouts for your children to consider. This Tuesday at 7pm our college and recent graduates will gather in the rectory's conference room. Do plan to join us or help sponsor our IHM Development Committee Golf Outing in October!
This weekend (Saturday and Sunday only), all Masses and Confessions will be in the school auditorium. The installation and cleaning will need at least another week to finish. Fr. Thumma will have the Saturday Vigil and the 10:30am and 12 noon Masses. I will celebrate the 7:30am and 9am Sunday Masses. Fr. Thumma will be away for retreat for a week from the 9th of September. Please keep him in prayer.
Know that there is a monthly healing Mass in honor of Saint Therese of Lisieux at Transfiguration Church in Tarrytown. The next one is Monday, September 9th at 7:30pm.

Our grandparents play a huge role in our lives. They are at the top of our family trees. They provide us with guidance and wisdom, and a lot of us have fond memories of bedtime stories and family occasions with our grandparents. Grandparent’s Day provides us with the perfect opportunity to honor our grandmothers and grandfathers and say thank you!

Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus heals a deaf man who had a speech impediment.
Mark tells us that he took him “off by himself away from the crowd.” Jesus then “put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, ‘Ephphatha!’—that is, ‘Be opened!’” Looking up to his Father and inserting his fingers into the man’s ears, Jesus establishes, as it were, an electrical current, literally plugging him into the divine energy, compelling him to hear the Word.
Now, let’s look at this healing in terms of its spiritual significance. The crowd is a large part of the problem. The raucous voices of so many, the insistent bray of the advertising culture, the confusing Babel of competing spiritualities—all of it makes us deaf to God’s word. And therefore, we have to be moved to a place of silence and communion.
Jesus draws us into his space, the space of the Church. There, away from the crowd, we can immerse ourselves in the rhythm of the liturgy, listen avidly to Scripture, study the theological tradition, watch the moves of holy people, take in the beauty of sacred art and architecture. There, we can hear.

CYO BASKETBALL
Registration for the Winter 2024-25 CYO Basketball season is OPEN on our website IHMBasketball.org. CYO Basketball is open to boys and girls grades 3-8 that are registered parishioners of IHM Parish or are students of IHM School or the Religious Education Program.
Evaluations will begin the week of October 7th, exact days and times to be determined. Once the teams are assigned, each team will be assigned a date and time for their practice for the entire season and practices will start immediately following evaluations, which should only take a week or two at most.

IHM Troop 2 Scarsdale Scouts are skilled in first aid, CPR, fire safety, wood tool safety, and the use of maps and compasses. Enjoy hands on experiences like archery, backpacking, canoeing, camping, cooking in the outdoors, hiking, rifle shooting, rock climbing, skiing and whitewater rafting. New Scouts hit the ground running at IHM Troop 2 Scarsdale. There’s no bench or second string in Scouting; everyone joins in the fun and adventure!
We are a scout run troop with adult leader mentors focused on character development, service and leadership growth.

Girl Scout Troops are Forming Now in Scarsdale
What do Girl Scouts do? Anything they set their minds to, of course!
Troops are forming now in Scarsdale and helping girls become young women of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Girls who attend IHM school or those who live in Scarsdale or Edgemont can join the community. Current Girl Scout families and those curious about what Girl Scouts do are invited to the Betty Taubert Girl Scout House (37 Wayside Lane) for archery, crafts, s’mores and more on Friday, September 20th starting at 5:00PM.

Scarsdale Edgemont Girl Scouts, part of the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson council, provides girls from kindergarten through 12th grade with a varied experience where they explore their interests, develop skills and grow into leaders who serve their communities. Girl Scouts will explore the four pillars of the Girl Scout Program, Outdoor, STEM, Life Skills, and Entrepreneurship. Through these pillars, they will camp, learn outdoor skills, participate in STEM activities, earn badges, prestigious leadership awards, participate in the famous Girl Scout Cookie Program, and other activities that they choose. Being girl-led is a hallmark of the Girl Scout experience. Girl Scouts have fun and form lifelong friendships in an environment where they are encouraged to take risks, work collaboratively and explore their world. Older Girl Scouts lead younger Girl Scouts and experienced leaders mentor new volunteers in a supportive community built on a long-standing tradition of being a sister to every Girl Scout.

The IHM Bible Discussion Group will begin its study of the Old Testament Book of Exodus on Tuesday evening September 17th at 7:00PM in the lower church. We will read and discuss the first two chapters in Exodus that night ending at 8:30PM.
All parishioners, and anyone they care to invite, are welcome. We often have 20 participants, leading to a lively discussion with many ideas, thoughts and interpretations opening up the Scriptures for a better understanding of its meaning and significance for our lives. We will continue most Tuesdays until late Spring 2025 discussing one or two chapters an evening depending on their length. Refreshments are served for the convenience of the participants. Hope to see many of you there as we grow in Faith together seeking the Wisdom of God.

The service will be held on Wednesday, September 11th beginning at 8:35AM in front of the Eastchester Town Hall located at 40 Mill Road. The Ursuline School of New Rochelle's annual Cereal Effect Food Drive has begun! Each fresh, unopened box of cereal donated will be delivered to the HOPE Soup Kitchen of New Rochelle to support those in need. Please help us reach our goal of 2,500 boxes of cereal!
Cereal box donations can be dropped off in the collection bin at the parish starting Sunday, September 8th until Sunday, September 22nd, or dropped off directly to the Ursuline School on North Avenue during our Crunch Time collection day on Saturday, September 21st.
