My dear friends,
As we settle into the summer with the 4th of July Weekend hopefully bringing us to a greater sense of gratitude for the blessings of our country and a deep sense of patriotism and desire to be of service for the common good, may I offer some suggestion for growth in the faith during July and August:
Sundays: attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation; receive the Eucharist worthily; make Sunday special by spending time with family, serving, praying, enjoying virtuous leisure; attend a weekday Mass.
Pray Daily: Pray before and after all meals; spend at least 15 minutes in private prayer; read a Catholic Bible by beginning with a Gospel and think how the Lord is speaking to you; pray the Rosary varying the Mysteries per the day and think how Christ’s life can apply to your life.
Friday Penance: Make every Friday a day of Penance, do not eat meat or make some other sacrifice to remember the crucifixion of our Savior, Jesus Christ

Confession: An examine of one's day before going to bed by means of an easy reminder - G-R-A-C-E (Gratitude for the blessings of the day, Request for the light of the Holy Spirit, take Account of Actions and Attitudes of the day - where did I cooperate with God's will or inspirations, where I ignored them, where I sinned - make an act of Contrition - and end with Enthusiasm asking for the grace and virtues for tomorrow); get to Confession at least once in the summer and then again in September after Labor Day.

Friends, today’s Gospel develops a theme that is uncomfortable. It tells how the people of Nazareth rejected Jesus. Authentically religious people, authentically spiritual people, will almost always be opposed. The logic behind this is simple and unanswerable: we live in a world gone wrong, a world turned upside down; therefore, when someone comes speaking the truth to us, we will think that they are crazy and dangerous.
Think for just a moment what would happen to you if you consistently and publicly spoke the word of God to our culture. If you spoke out against abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, human trafficking, rampant materialism, and ideological secularism, what would happen to you? If you presented, in a full-throated way, the full range of Catholic social and moral and spiritual teaching, what would they do to you? Today’s Gospel offers a clue.

Camp Veritas is a weeklong sleep-away camp for Catholic teens ages 12-18. Campers full immersion in the Catholic Faith through Mass. Adoration, engaging talks, praise and worship and team building activities and so much more!

Currently serving happily as president of the board of directors of the Black and Indian Mission Office, I write today to offer thanks for last year's support of $258,334, and to ask for your generosity again as we prepare to collect an offering on Sunday, July 14 for the Catholic Missions among Black and Indian People. Established as the first national collection in 1874, it has proven itself to be a successful vehicle to provide for the needs of our African American, Native American, and Alaska Native brothers and sisters.

The John P. Naughton Memorial Scholarship was established by the family when John passed away. John loved history and always viewed historical events through a moral perspective. His sixteen years of Catholic education trained him to do this and hopefully, the education at IHM and beyond will enrich the recipient’s life and influence their decisions in the future. The generosity of the IHM family has been overwhelming and, as a result, the recent Midnight Runs have been a wonderful success! Our next Run will be in a few weeks and we are targeting the following to replenish our inventory:
- Men's pants waist sizes 30-34 and all lengths; men's and women's sweatpants sized small, medium, large, and extra large; men's sneakers sizes 9 thru 13; women's sneakers sizes 7 thru 9; rain ponchos, all sizes.
- Please note that we only distribute gently used or new items. So, as you pull your summer wear forward in your closets, please consider Midnight Run if something doesn't strike your fancy anymore! Even if a donation cannot be used for a Run, we will have a home for it - there is much need in the NY metro area!
One of the easiest but most critical ways to contribute is helping with the food prep before each Run. Anyone who would be interested in that effort please email ihmmidnightrun@gmail.com so we can add your name to the distribution list. We are also seeking new people to join us on the actual Runs, thank you!
One-Day Pilgrimages in the Archdiocese of New York

THE WORD SHRINE COMES FROM THE LATIN SCRINIUM, which means “box” – because the first Christian shrines were boxes or repositories for the relics of saints. Today, not all Catholic shrines house relics, but all are focal points for prayer and devotion, often to a saint or the Blessed Mother.
A shrine might be a large, “official” pilgrimage destination like the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception of Mary in Washington, D.C., a side altar in a parish church or a local memorial alongside a highway. It might mark the site of a blessed event – a martyrdom, a Marian apparition – or memorialize a tragedy. A shrine is “in general, a holy place,” says the Catholic Dictionary, where people go to pray, meditate, venerate, ask forgiveness and lay their intentions before God and the saints.
There are dozens of shrines in the Archdiocese of New York, including several worthy of a one-day pilgrimage. From the home of the first American-born saint in lower Manhattan to a humble chapel devoted to the memories of unborn and prematurely born infants in Sullivan County, these holy places offer us a chance to be in the presence of the divine without traveling halfway around the world. In a few cases, convenient side trips can deepen the experience of pilgrimage.
If you are “staycationing” this summer, or just have a free day to spend enriching your faith life, pick a shrine and make a pilgrimage. Think of it as a theme park for your soul – not the fleeting adrenaline rush of the roller coaster or the log flume, but the luminous pause at the top of the Ferris wheel that reveals the far horizon and puts the entire world in perspective.

In a onetime convent chapel at St. Mary of the Snow in Ulster County, the Shrine of the Holy Innocents is “dedicated to babies unborn, babies born too soon, infants and children who have gone home to God,” says Deacon Mike Sweeney. “We are a place of dignity and healing.”The modest chapel houses a growing number of plaques dedicated by grieving parents. Visitors can order a plaque for their own departed innocent, or just say a prayer in the presence of the existing plaques and in community with those who have suffered the loss of a child. Masses are offered in the chapel twice during the week, and there is an overnight Eucharistic adoration every Sunday evening.

IHM Religious Education 2024-2025 Registration is NOW OPEN
On the day of your child's/children's Baptism, the Church pledged to you, the parents, our assistance in raising them in the practice of the faith to keep God's commandments as Jesus taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Here at Immaculate Heart of Mary, our Religious Education Program is part of this integral formation in the faith that would include daily prayer at home, family participation in Sunday Mass (and on Holy Days of Obligation), periodic Confession, and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy flowing out from your dinner table.
IHM Religious Education Registration for the 2024-2025 school year for grades Kindergarten through 8th Grade opened on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. Registration, including credit card payment, is completed online and is on a first-come-first-served basis.
Returning Families should sign in to www.parishgiving.org to register. You should have received an email to remind you of your username.
New Families, those who did not have a child enrolled in 23-24, must complete a New Family Registration Form to register a child(ren) for 24-25.

An "Entering Canaan" Day of Prayers and Healing for women will be held in Westchester, NY on Saturday August 10th. - IHM High School of Religion (HSOR): HSOR will return in September! We offer a fun and relaxing faith community of service projects, Prayer & Pizza, Game Nights, sacraments, lively discussions and Open Gym. - Charismatic Morning of Renewal Meeting at the House of Prayer: This group meets on Thursdays after the 9:00AM parish Mass - Morning Prayer, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with Intercessory Prayer and a discussion of the Scripture Readings for the coming Sunday.
- IHM School of Community: this group meets on Wednesdays at 7:00PM in the IHM Rectory Conference Room to look at our daily life and discover who we are as Christians. The text discussed is "The Religious Sense" by Father Luigi Giussani. If you are interested in attending via Zoom, please contact the Rectory and ask to be put in contact with Carolyn of School of Community.
- IHM Bible Discussion Group: The IHM Bible Discussion Group will reconvene after Labor Day to read the Book of Exodus. CLICK HERE for more details, to submit questions, or if you are interested in joining.
- IHM Troop 2 (Boy Scouts): this group welcomes 5th through 8th grade boys interested in outdoor adventure. - Holy Hour for Life - St. Anne's Chapel (Yonkers) - on July 10th we will be having our monthly Holy Hour for Life at St. Ann's Chapel on Midland Avenue in Yonkers at 7pm. Please join us in this month of the Precious Blood of Jesus as we give thanks and pray for the protection of all human life, marriage and family, the healing of those touched by abortion and the safety of those imprisoned for the cause of the life Sponsored by St. John-Most Holy Trinity-St Ann Parish. - Health for Life Program (HeLP): Are you 55 or older with chronic conditions? If so, the free Health for Life Program (HeLP) offers you a sensible and enjoyable way to enhance your quality of life by showing you how to manage your chronic health conditions, such as high blood pressure, pain, depression and diabetes. HeLP follows a model developed at Stanford University’s School of Medicine. - Healing Weekend: This is a 48 hour overnight program held at the Dominican Conference and Retreat Center in Niskayuna, NY held on July 26th to July 28th. For information or to register, please call Gloria at (914) 261-5812 or Phyllis at (646) 281-4790.
- The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) offers services to persons age 55+. If you are ready to reenter the workplace, a wide range of jobs are available and the SCSEP Program is eager to assist you in preparing for a job and to direct you to job openings. Mature job seekers learn new skills, update current skills, and obtain skills to find a job. Training programs include computer, customer service, home health aide, and office skills. For more information and eligibility guidelines speak to a SCSEP Peer Counselor at the Urban League of Westchester at (914) 428-5850.
- Volunteers are needed throughout Westchester County to provide free rides to older adults (age 60+) who reside in Westchester and need help getting to the doctor, shopping mall, friends and family or a number of other activities that require transportation. RideConnect, a service administered by Family Services of Westchester (FSW) with support from Westchester County’s Department of Senior Program and Services (DSPS), is an informational, referral and volunteer based transportation program to provide services to older adults who are no longer driving. To volunteer as a RideConnect driver, individuals must be at least 21 years of age, enjoy working with older adults and have a valid driver’s license. No minimum time commitment is required and volunteers can sign up to drive as little, or as often as their schedule permits.
