My dear friends,
The physical structure and wording in our IHM church can help us enter into this Sunday's Gospel. Please take a moment to read Bishop Barron's reflection below and then as you come to Mass this weekend, look up to our beautiful wooden ceiling to see the inside of a boat! The Church is the Barque (boat) of Saint Peter, whom Jesus chose to be in and from which to teach. Bishop Barron also refers to the two Latin words from one of the Psalms. These words are engraved on the high altar below the tabernacle! I am sure there are some among us who may finally appreciate at what they have been observing after many years!
This weekend, thanks to the hard work of Debbie Bracken, Virginia Holek and others, IHM will be sponsoring a 2nd Good (Free) Will Donation event to raise funds for our Social Ministries Account that helps those in need as well as our various Social Ministries (MIDNITE RUN, HOPE, FOOD PANTRY & more). This event will display IHM memorabilia and a variety of household items generously donated by our IHM parishioners. There will also be slate pieces from our church roof that kept us protected for decades and were replaced 2 years ago! A 50/50 Raffle will be available, too.
Thank you to the Parish Council for sponsoring the Coffee and Donuts in the lower church after the Sunday Masses this weekend! It wonderfully complements the Social Ministries Free Will event. The last meeting of the Parish Council took place this last week and it was a chance to reflect on the work they did: continuing the September parish picnic, getting a new outside crèche, monthly Sunday Coffee and Donuts, the annual Wine and Cheese gathering and Cocoa and Carols sing along, Lenten Fish Fry, Parish Ministries Fair, IHM Patronal Feast Weekend, getting our parish library's catalogue digitized with the service of the soon-to-be Eagle Scout Luis Marquez, and enhancing security. I am still working on the appointed members to complete this Fall's new Parish Council, so please be patient.
Join me in thanking the members who have completed their service and will be cycling off the council:
John Larkin, Chair
Camille Roche
Paul Asaro
Santiago Rudloff
Gianna Oliva
For all your dedicated commitment to the parish and to the work of the council (particularly the Coffee and Donuts!) - thank you!!!
What can one expect? Reduced lighting; no incense or bells; spoken responses; a capella music (sung closing hymn with no instruments); accessible worship aids; literal language in the homily; a shorter Mass (about 45 minutes); Stigma-free environment; participants are encouraged to get up and move around or make noise as needed, and our Chapel designated as a "quiet space".
Low-gluten hosts will be utilized for the Consecration and if anyone should require the Precious Blood, please speak to me before Mass.
Please spread the word and it is our hope that this will be the start of a periodic Sensory Friendly Mass at IHM!
For the past 20 plus weeks our IHM Bible Discussion group has been going through the Gospel of John and this Tuesday will be the final Chapter 21! New members are always welcome, even for the last chapter.
After taking the summer off, a new book of the Sacred Scriptures will begin after Labor Day!
Thank you Tom and Rosemary Roche for leading this beautiful and essential way to come to know Jesus Christ more deeply. I greatly appreciate your hard work, dedication, love for the group and the way you shepherd and build them up.
IHM was blessed to host the St. Mother Seton Route of the Eucharistic Procession last month. The National Eucharistic Congress will be July 17-21 in Indianapolis (Why Indy? - Indianapolis is accessible in one day's drive to 70% of the US population!). I believe there are some from our parish who are going or interested in going. It will be an amazing and unforgettable event and gathering of the Catholic Church in the USA!
Fr. Thumma is scheduled for the 7:30am and 10:30am Sunday Masses. I am scheduled for the Saturday Vigil, 9am Family Mass (without the Children's Liturgy), 12noon and 2pm Sensory Friendly Mass.
A blessed Sunday to all!
The summer Sunday Mass schedule begins only in July.
