My dear friends,
The poetic quote above comes from Sunday's Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (typically referred to as Corpus Christi) from a special section after the Second Reading and before the Alleluia Verse called the Sequence (click here for the readings and Sequence). Written by Saint Thomas Aquinas, this Doctor of the Church put his genius, faith and love of the Lord together to provide the hymns, readings and prayers of this Feast. Intended to be celebrated on a Thursday since that is the day when Our Lord Jesus Instituted the Eucharist at the Last Supper, this Feast has been transferred to Sunday in the United States and in many other places including Rome (but not inside the Vatican!). A Eucharistic Miracle in Bolsena, Italy, in 1263, was the catalyst for the Holy Father proclaiming this feast for the whole Church. That miracle seemed to be the divine response to a priest's doubts about the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist when he was offering Mass; his faith had grown lukewarm.
This year, following the National Eucharistic Procession that passed through IHM recently, and all our hours of Adoration that are available (until 2pm now on Tuesdays and Thursdays), may we enter into the sacrificial love of Jesus really present in the Eucharist.

IHM is blessed once again to receive a seminarian for the Archdiocese of New York. We welcome Ian Mendoza to the parish this Monday, June 3rd! Ian will be spending his Pastoral Year with us. His introduction to the parish is below.
It was wonderful that a number of parishioners were able to attend the Ordination Mass and/or First Mass of Thanksgiving of Father Vincent Castaldi last weekend! They are always grace-filled moments in the life of our Church. Father Castaldi will be assigned for the summer at St. Philip Neri Parish in the Bronx, after which, he will return to Washington, DC, to complete his studies.
Over the weekend of June 22/23, IHM's Social Ministry volunteers will be sponsoring another Good Will Donation event to raise funds for our Social Ministries Account that helps those in need as well as our various Social Ministries (MIDNITE RUN, HOPE, FOOD PANTRY & others). This event will display IHM memorabilia and a variety of household items generously donated by our IHM parishioners. Please help to support the IHM Social Ministry Efforts by selecting from the various items and making a free will donation. There will also be a 50/50 Raffle.
On Sunday, June 23rd at 2pm, IHM will offer a Sensory Friendly - Special Needs Mass. This will hopefully be the first of a periodic Mass for families over the year!
This week Religious Education registration for the Fall School Year will go live. To ensure that our parish program is no longer in an operational deficit, but self-sustaining, the rate was adjusted and 2 fees will be added for the police crossing guards and for some activities. A more detailed letter will go out to the families of our Religious Education students. Please see the information page below to prepare for this week!
Give me some more time to work on the Parish Council appointments for next year (September'24-June'25). They will be announced in time so that they may join in the June Parish Council meeting and reception.
The Designer Bag Bingo looks fun this Thursday!
Next weekend we celebrate our Patronal Feast Day - The Immaculate Heart of Mary! As such, we will use not the regular Sunday readings in the Missal, but Readings and Mass Prayers that are proper for the Blessed Mother next Saturday and Sunday. Saturday evening join us for a BBQ and some fun items for the younger ones. Sunday we will have coffee and donuts thanks to our parish council! Weather permitting, we will end each Mass with a procession to our outside statue of the Blesse Mother next to the north (school) parking lot. Do join us to celebrate our parish's feast day!

IHM welcomes Seminarian Ian Mendoza for his Pastoral Year
Dear Parishioners of Immaculate Heart of Mary,
My name is Ian Mendoza and I am a seminarian for the Archdiocese of New York. I was born and raised in Cortlandt Manor in upper Westchester County along with my two brothers. Both my parents are registered nurses while my Dad is also a permanent deacon at St. Columbanus, my home parish. My older brother, Fr. William, was one of the seven men who were ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal Dolan at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on May 25 who has been recently assigned to Resurrection in Rye. My younger brother is also a seminarian who has finished his first year of college seminary at St. Andrew’s in South Orange, New Jersey.
In regard to my vocation story, I have been blessed with parents who have been true witnesses to the Christian faith who first instilled in me the importance and utter necessity to have a strong relationship with Jesus Christ and Our Blessed Mother. It was my parents who first introduced to me the devoted priests of St. Columbanus who have inspired and guided me throughout my discernment for the priesthood. I recall being fascinated with the priesthood at an early age mainly because of the fine example of my parish priests. This fascination with the priesthood was further nurtured with my involvement in the various ministries of my home parish such as serving as an altar server and reader. Furthermore, throughout my time at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School in Shrub Oak, I was moved in how the school principal, a Sister of Charity, spoke of the various vocations of the faithful especially on the priesthood with such fervor. I then spent a wonderful four years at Iona Prep continuing my involvement in the parish and serving in campus ministry. I am grateful for the encouragement and support that I received during these formative years of discernment from the Irish Christian Brothers, faculty, and students.
With much prayer and guidance, I had decided to apply for the college seminary program in which I subsequently spent four years at Cathedral Seminary House of Formation in Douglaston, Queens studying at St. John’s University. For the past two years, I have been studying theology in Rome at the Pontifical North American College which has been certainly a gift and opportunity to learn and grow in my appreciation for the universal Church.
I am grateful for this opportunity to serve you, the parishioners of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, throughout my pastoral year and I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you. God Bless!

Friends, today’s Gospel focuses on the spiritual power of the Eucharist. A central claim of the Catholic Church is that Jesus is substantially present under the forms of bread and wine. His presence is not simply evocative and symbolic, but rather real, true, and substantial.
To verify this scripturally, look at the accounts of the Last Supper in Matthew, Mark, and Luke—and also in Paul. But look especially at the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel. Jesus says, “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.” And when they object, Jesus does not soften his language; he intensifies it.
This is the ground for the Church’s defense of the Real Presence. How can we make sense of it? It has everything to do with who Jesus is. If he were simply an ordinary human being, his words would have, at best, a symbolic resonance. But Jesus is God, and what God says, is.
Thus, when Jesus’ words over the bread and wine are spoken, they change into what the words signify. They become really, truly, and substantially the Body and Blood of the Lord.

Archdiocese of New York Priests Ordained at St. Patrick's Cathedral

The Archdiocese of New York welcomed seven men to the priesthood on Saturday, May 25, with the Mass of Priestly Ordination held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan.
Pews in the center of the Cathedral were filled with non-participating clergy members, along with family members of the ordinandi, as those being ordained are known, and other well-wishers for the two-hour ceremony.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan celebrated the ordination Mass, which was concelebrated by bishops and clergy from throughout the archdiocese, including: Auxiliary Bishop Edmund Whalen, Vicar for Clergy; Auxiliary Bishop John Bonnici; Auxiliary Bishop Peter Byrne; Auxiliary Bishop Gerardo Colacicco; Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Espaillat; Diocese of Brooklyn Auxiliary Bishop James Massa, rector of St. Joseph’s Seminary; and Monsignor Joseph LaMorte, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of New York.
The Mass began with a long procession of the dozens of concelebrating bishops and clergy, led by the ordinandi.
“This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it,” Cardinal Dolan said, welcoming those in attendance.

In Latin America, because of generous people like you, many pastoral projects are reinforced both there and in the Caribbean. For the past fifty years, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops [USCCB] has helped 25 countries in Central and South America, and the Caribbean confront challenges to the faith and raise people from poverty.
Your aid to the Catholic Home Missions will assist in making a difference in the lives of our brothers and sister right here in the United States by strengthening the Church in our own backyard. Four out of ten dioceses in the United States and its territories are considered "home mission" dioceses requiring outside financial help, with small Catholic populations, limited resources, vast and often difficult terrain, and a shortage of priests and religious. Despite the challenges, the communities continue to grow in faith to serve God and neighbor and form the next generation of faithful disciples.

IHM Religious Education 2024-2025 Registration
On the day of your child's/children's Baptism, the Church pledged to you, the parents, our assistance in raising them in the practice of the faith to keep God's commandments as Jesus taught us, by loving God and our neighbor.
Here at Immaculate Heart of Mary, our Religious Education Program is part of this integral formation in the faith that would include daily prayer at home, family participation in Sunday Mass (and on Holy Days of Obligation), periodic Confession, and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy flowing out from your dinner table.
Online registration for the 2024-2025 school year for grades Kindergarten through 8th Grade will open this Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at 12 Noon. IHM Religious Education student registration, including credit card payment, is completed online.
New Families, those who did not have a child enrolled in 23-24, must complete the New Family Registration Form to register a child(ren) for 24-25. A description of the program and the online registration form can be found at https://ihm-parish.org/rel-ed-registration. The form will open on 6/4.
Returning Families, those who did have a child enrolled in 23-24, will receive an email with your username for the Parish Giving system on June 6 around 12 noon. You will be able to sign in, set up registration fee payment by credit card or bank transfer, review your family information, add any additional children if needed, and select your classes. (Please wait for this email and do not complete the New Family form. Contact ihmsor@ihmscarsdale.org if you do not receive it.)
Our next Midnight Run is scheduled for June 8th. Many have answered our call for donations as they start their spring cleaning projects. Especially needed for these next Runs are men’s jeans from waist size 30-42 and all lengths. This is in addition to sneakers, sweatpants, hoodies, backpacks, shorts and T-shirts. All items should be gently used or better. Anyone who is interested in any aspect of Midnight Run—driving, sorting, food prep—please email ihmmidnightrun@gmail.com, thank you!

IHM CYO Summer Volleyball Camp
IHM CYO is running a summer Volleyball camp for students in grades 4 to 8 who are parishioners of IHM and/or attend our IHM School.
- Session One will be held from July 22 to July 26 from 4PM to 7PM
- Session Two be held from July 29 to August 2 from 4PM to 7PM
The fee is $155 per session. A Tee shirt is included.
A Resource for Older Adults: Isolation to Connection Program
Accessing services is less overwhelming when there is a caring professional providing support at each step of the way.
Through this free program, our warm and friendly connection specialist will work with isolated older adults to assess their needs and connect them to an array of community based services, including:
- Home-delivered meals
- Transportation
- Vaccine appointments
- Ongoing case-management programs
- Home-based medical services
- Telephone or in-person counseling
- Home care
- Social programming

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION AT IHM
- IHM High School of Religion (HSOR): HSOR welcomes all high school students to our gatherings Wednesdays from 7:30-9:00PM in the Lower Church (next meeting is this week). We offer a fun and relaxing faith community of service projects, Prayer & Pizza, Game Nights, sacraments, lively discussions and Open Gym. - IHM Centering Prayer Group: Meetings last around 45-60 minutes. The format includes: 20 minutes of Centering Prayer (a silent prayer form in the Christian contemplative tradition in which we seek to open our minds and hearts to the Divine Life within), Lectio Divina (a prayerful reading of Scripture) and a brief discussion. - Charismatic Morning of Renewal Meeting at the House of Prayer: This group meets on Thursdays after the 9:00AM parish Mass - Morning Prayer, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with Intercessory Prayer and a discussion of the Scripture Readings for the coming Sunday.
- IHM School of Community: this group meets on Wednesdays at 7:00PM in the IHM Rectory Conference Room to look at our daily life and discover who we are as Christians. The text discussed is "The Religious Sense" by Father Luigi Giussani. If you are interested in attending via Zoom, please contact the Rectory and ask to be put in contact with Carolyn of School of Community.
- IHM Bible Discussion Group: The IHM Bible Discussion Group meets every Tuesday night through mid-June from 7PM to 8:30PM in the IHM lower Church and are currently reading John's Gospel. Parishioners gather to read, analyze, and discuss Sacred Scripture while enjoying a little dessert and each other’s company. To make Bible Discussion more accessible at IHM and accommodate those unavailable on Tuesday night, there is a do-it-yourself-at-home option. - IHM Troop 2 (Boy Scouts): this group welcomes 5th through 8th grade boys interested in outdoor adventure. - Our parish will keep the name of a deceased parishioner or loved one for 2 weeks on our bulletin and Sunday Mass lists.
