My dear friends,
After the beautiful weather for the celebration of Easter Sunday last week, the Octave of this most momentous mystery of our salvation has been an interesting ride! From rain and damaging winds (I hope people's homes are fine) to yesterday's earthquakes to then Monday's exciting solar eclipse, may I suggest that Sunday's Feast of Divine Mercy is a beautiful moment for us to find peace in the turbulence of nature, let alone the upheaval our world and society is experiencing.
Since March 25th fell on Holy Week, the observance of the Annunciation (when Blessed Mary received the Archangel Gabriel's invitation from God to be the Mother of Jesus, the Son of God) is moved to the day after we conclude the Octave of Easter, that is this Monday.
Our faith is really lived in the light and reality of these two Sacred Mysteries: the Incarnation when the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (Annunciation-Christmas) and the Paschal Mysteries of the Lord's Passion, Death and Resurrection (Holy Week and Easter).
Allow me to highlight a few of all the Thank You's I hoped to express at Easter on behalf of Fr. Thumma, the House of Prayer, and the Rectory Staff - to the Saint Veronica's Guild who are tireless at seeing to the beauty and seasonal nature of our sanctuary, Marian Chapel and Christ the King Altar - the beautiful Easter Flowers help us enter into this sacred time of year! To our Servers, Lectors, Ushers, Extraordinary Ministers and to all who volunteer their time and abilities at IHM from the Finance and Parish Councils to those organizations and groups that build up the spiritual life of the parish, minister to the social and corporal needs of the community and to those who help run our vibrant and dynamic sports and youth programs. To our IHM parish school and Religious Education Program. Last, but not least, to Dr. Laurie Adamo, our Parish Music Director, who always brings together a magnificent ensemble of musicians and singers, including our own cantor, Elizabeth Farnum, and IHM Choir, for a truly exceptional experience of the mysteries of Holy Week and the glory of Easter!
Thank you for your continued support of IHM, particularly through the Easter collection, that will remain open for a little more time.
Know that the Rectory Office will be closed today as we do not have coverage. For emergencies, please call 914-723-0276 and our Answering Service will connect you to a priest.
I am still looking for a Library Coordinator volunteer so that all we have to offer after putting the catalogue online can also be experienced in person, too!
Along those lines, we have wonderful and dedicated parishioners and volunteers who see to the weekly, periodic and seasonal collection and administration of goods, clothing, food, items for those in need from the food pantry, to Cornerstone, to Midnight Run to the Giving Tree, to the Baby Bottle collection and Baby Shower, to the Christmas Toy Drive and Easter Baskets, and an excited group of students in HOPE Circle. Through you, IHM is able to move mountains and live the divine love of God for our neighbor. From time to time, I am asked for help on an ad hoc basis (such as now for a senior parishioner who will need a ride to her PT three times a week from April 15th for recovery after an operation). It would be very helpful to have an interested group of such IHM volunteers, who want to serve in such targeted ways and who have availability. Please reach out to me if interested!
We are excited for the upcoming IHM School Classes of the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s Reunion on Saturday, April 20, 2024! Mass at 5:30pm & Reunion to follow.
The next Midnight Run will be on April 27th. Donations and volunteers are needed.
Have a blessed Divine Mercy Sunday and consider our afternoon Confessions at 2pm or Holy Hour at 3pm to honor this day and receive the full measure of peaceful blessings from Jesus! Feel free to venerate our relic of Saint Faustina in the Marian Chapel. I leave you with a quote from her Diary (entry 699):
My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and a shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day are opened all the divine floodgates through which graces flow. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter.
