In four weeks (a month) we will be entering Holy Saturday, the Easter Vigil and Easter! Let us renew or take up Lenten practices to allow a more fruitful cooperation with God's divine life, otherwise called grace. Our external practices in union with the Church (prayer, fasting and almsgiving) together with interior practices known to us and the Lord will serve the renewing of our hearts, minds and souls and a more authentic celebration of the Paschal Mysteries of Jesus' Passion, Death and Resurrection!
Thank you for your attentiveness to the presentation on our parish's financial report last weekend and for prayerfully considering a 10% increase in church donations. If you have not yet had an opportunity to review the report, it is available immediately after this article.
This weekend I will be saying a few words about our Cardinal's Annual Stewardship Appeal in this "in-pew" weekend Lenten request for alms to assist the charitable needs in our Archdiocese.
Next week our friends who make available handcrafted olivewood items from Bethlehem and the Holy Land will be visiting IHM. May it be a time of good support for the Christian community of the Holy Land.
This weekend our local Girl Scout troop will be selling some of their famous cookies at IHM (talk about temptation during these 40 days!).
In addition to 7pm Friday Stations of the Cross during Lent, our next parish Fish Fry will be Friday, March 8th from 5:30pm to 8pm.
The are some Liturgies and Masses that Catholics should make a point to get to at least once in our lives. The Feast of the Presentation (February 2nd) and the Easter Vigil are two that we can go to in our parish. At the Cathedral the Ordination of Priests (and Deacons and Bishops, too) is moving.
Each year during Holy Week, our Archbishop, Cardinal Dolan, blesses the new Holy Oils (Oil of the Catechumens, Sacred Chrism and Oil of the Sick) to be used in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick throughout the Archdiocese of New York. It is also the opportunity each year for all the priests serving in the Archdiocese to renew our priestly promises.
On Holy Tuesday, March 26th, therefore, IHM invites you to join in the Chrism Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Our two buses will head out from the parish at 2pm.
After Easter the IHM School community is eager to host an Alumni Gathering for students from the 80s, 90s and 00s! More information is below.

Friends, in today’s Gospel, the Jews ask Jesus for a sign, and he blithely comments, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” One of the most startling claims that Jesus made about himself is that the people of Israel should come to him for those goods that they formerly sought in the temple: forgiveness, teaching, and healing. And he confirmed this identification when making this statement after purifying the temple of the money changers.
The bystanders remark on the absurdity of this claim, reminding him that the construction of this Herodian version of the sacred place had taken forty-six years. The author of the Gospel provides the indispensable gloss: “But he was speaking about the temple of his body.” In a word, Jesus himself is the very particular “place” where the God of Israel, who cannot be contained by the entire universe, deigned in a unique and unrepeatable way to dwell.
The temple known to Jesus and his followers would be obliterated just forty years after the time of Christ. But the temple of Jesus’ Body, the Church, will endure forever.

Season of Lent
Dear friends in the Lord:
On Laetare Sunday, March 10, in all our parishes and in churches throughout the country, we will be collecting your offering for the Catholic Relief Services. With your support, you serve Jesus those who are poor and vulnerable in the most marginalized communities in our world.
When you give, you help fill the bellies of young children; you help prevent trafficking and provide welcome kits for survivors; your donations help mothers and babies around the world receive nutritional care and health exams; refugees find safety and receive emergency assistance and trauma counseling; and farmers learn innovative ways to plant and grow crops despite drought or disease.
For more than 75 years, CRS has been providing expertise and compassion to the very poorest of our brothers and sisters in more than 100 countries. Your generosity to the Catholic Relief Services facilitates much-needed support and makes a difference for so many around the globe. As you would agree, this is a most worthy Lenten exercise. The olive wood carving market is the major source of income in the Bethlehem area. Tuesday, March 26th will be the Chrism Mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral where our Archbishop, Cardinal Dolan, will bless the new Holy Oils and where the priests of the Archdiocese, including Msgr. Sweeney and Fr. Thumma, will renew their priestly promises. If there are any parishioners who would be interested in attending this unique Mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in NYC, IHM is providing bus transportation to the city and one of our two buses is already filled up with Confirmation candidates and Bible Discussion participants! The buses will be departing IHM for the city at 2:00PM. They are scheduled to depart midtown at 5:45pm, but if enough people want to stay in NYC for dinner, we can arrange for one bus to pick up people later. Spring cleaning? While you are looking through your closets, please consider donating to Midnight Run as we transition into the warmer weather! Our next Run will be April 13th and we would greatly appreciate those items which don't fit or that you will no longer wear. Especially needed are: men's jeans, men's shoes and sneakers, sweatpants, hoodies, rainwear, backpacks, shorts, T-shirts, women's sneakers and sweatpants.
Our recent Runs were very successful and we found homes for ALL donated items! We thank everyone for their generosity. There is much need in this metro area and all donations help!

- IHM High School of Religion (HSOR): HSOR welcomes all high school students to our gatherings every Wednesday from 7:30-9:00PM in the Lower Church. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 6th. We offer a fun and relaxing faith community of service projects, Prayer & Pizza, Game Nights, sacraments, lively discussions and Open Gym. - IHM Centering Prayer Group: The group meets on Wednesdays at 10:00AM in the Church Library. Newcomers are always welcome. Meetings last around 45-60 minutes. The format includes: 20 minutes of Centering Prayer (a silent prayer form in the Christian contemplative tradition in which we seek to open our minds and hearts to the Divine Life within), Lectio Divina (a prayerful reading of Scripture) and a brief discussion. - Charismatic Morning of Renewal Meeting at the House of Prayer: This group meets on Thursdays after the 9:00AM parish Mass - Morning Prayer, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with Intercessory Prayer and a discussion of the Scripture Readings for the coming Sunday.
- IHM School of Community: this group meets on Wednesdays at 7:00PM in the IHM Rectory Conference Room to look at our daily life and discover who we are as Christians. The text discussed is "The Religious Sense" by Father Luigi Giussani. If you are interested in attending via Zoom, please contact the Rectory and ask to be put in contact with Carolyn of School of Community.
- IHM Bible Discussion Group: The IHM Bible Discussion Group meets every Tuesday night through mid-June from 7PM to 8:30PM in the IHM lower Church. Parishioners gather to read, analyze, and discuss Sacred Scripture while enjoying a little dessert and each other’s company. To make Bible Discussion more accessible at IHM and accommodate those unavailable on Tuesday night, there is a do-it-yourself-at-home option. - IHM Troop 2 (Boy Scouts): this group welcomes 5th through 8th grade boys interested in outdoor adventure. - Volunteers Wanted to Train as Leaders for Free Health Workshops for Seniors:The Department of Senior Programs and Services, seeks volunteers to teach a workshop that will help older adults better manage chronic health conditions such as arthritis, asthma, high blood pressure and the like. A medical background is not necessary. The volunteer training is scheduled for March 13, 14 and 20,21, 2024 from 8:30AM to 4:00PM at Fordham University’s Westchester campus in West Harrison. - Salesian High School will be hosting an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 23rd, from 1:00 - 3:00PM! The cost of the event is $25 per family.
