Our condolences are with Sister Nancy and Sister Rose of the House of Prayer and the New York Sisters of Charity on the passing of Sister Bernadette Brennan, whose Wake and Funeral Mass will be later today. Flowers were sent on behalf of the parish. I plan to visit the wake and Fr. Thumma hopes to concelebrate the Funeral Mass.

Enjoy these last days before the start of the Lenten Season! As in the past, the Saint Veronica's Guild has given us the last remaining red poinsettias around the altar as we approach Saint Valentine's Day. Our days of singing Alleluia are numbered. Have a great celebration for Mardi Gras on Tuesday and perhaps also celebrate Saint Valentine's Day on Tuesday this year to respect Ash Wednesday.
Give good thought to our Lenten practices to bring us more deeply in union with Jesus Christ: For prayer consider daily Mass, praying the Rosary, doing the Stations of the Cross each week, a retreat or day of recollection, reading Scripture or signing up for Eucharistic Adoration.
For fasting consider looking at those things that have their hooks in us from electronic devices, to food and drink, to talk and company that do not promote virtuous living or a state of grace, to all that keeps us from taking a proper sabbath rest each Sunday.
For almsgiving consider each of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy this Lent, as well as to pray about our income and where God desires us to apply the various parts of it.

Eucharistic Adoration on Fridays of Lent will end at 6:45pm in the chapel to then allow Stations of the Cross to begin at 7pm in the church.
Thanks to the Nicholson's, there will be Coffee and Donuts after the 9:00am Family Mass in the Lower Church to get us ready for the Super Bowl!
Fr. Thumma is scheduled to celebrate the Saturday Vigil Mass, as well as the 7:30am and 12 noon Masses Sunday.
I look forward to some Monday evening quarterbacking with the Parish Council this Monday;)

Ash Wednesday: Repent & Believe!
While it's not a holy day proper, Ash Wednesday is, interestingly, a day when Catholics all over the world feel the need to attend Mass.
There's something in us that calls us to participate in this kickoff to Lent. It's like the opening ceremony of the Olympics. With these funny ashes on our foreheads, now we can begin the Christian game anew, taking on the specific challenges of renewed prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
Ashes are an external sign of penance. They are a reminder that we all will experience death and we don't have forever to repent, to "get right" with God. Jesus has victory over death in the end. With him by our side, what have we to fear?
As our Lenten season begins, how will this year be different?
What concrete steps will you take to allow Jesus to live in you more fully?
Who will you trust to walk alongside you as companions and friends?
After watching this message from Bishop Barron on how to "get the most out of" Lent this year, pondering these questions:
- What challenges do I foresee this Lent?
- How can I create a new routine of prayer this week?
- When I fast, who can I offer up my discomfort for? Who can I pray for?

Sunday, February 11, 2024 | Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time| Mark 1:40-45
Friends, our Gospel for today has to do with Jesus’ healing a leper. There aren’t that many lepers around today, but there are plenty of people that we treat as outsiders or pariahs. Like Jesus, we should be welcoming to them. Now, I have nothing particularly against that way of reading the situation, but I suspect that we’ve all heard it a thousand times.
Let me propose a symbolic reading a little different from the customary one. I propose that the leper here stands not so much for the socially ostracized but for the one who has wandered away from right worship, the one who is no longer able or willing to worship the true God. That’s why Jesus tells the man to “go, show yourself to the priest.” In other words, go back to the temple from which you’ve been away for so long.
What is so important about worship? To worship is to order the whole of one’s life toward the living God, and, in doing so, to become interiorly and exteriorly rightly ordered. To worship is to signal to oneself what one’s life is finally about. It’s nothing that God needs, but it is very much something that we need.

- IHM School of Community: this group meets on Wednesdays at 7:00PM in the IHM Rectory Conference Room to look at our daily life and discover who we are as Christians. - IHM Bible Discussion Group: The IHM Bible Discussion Group meets every Tuesday night through mid-June from 7PM to 8:30PM in the IHM lower Church. Parishioners gather to read, analyze, and discuss Sacred Scripture while enjoying a little dessert and each other’s company. To make Bible Discussion more accessible at IHM and accommodate those unavailable on Tuesday night, there is a do-it-yourself-at-home option.
