My dear friends,
This is certainly a special time of the year. With our beloved country, we bring our faith to the celebration of Thanksgiving! At the Last Supper Jesus was acutely aware that all blessings descend from His Heaven Father above. In an act of praise and thanksgiving, Jesus instituted the Eucharist (the Mass for us as Latin Rite Roman Catholics) as the Sacrament and Memorial to make present this offering of His life in atonement of sin and the way for divine blessing and grace to be showered upon us until He comes again.
May Jesus bless the offerings, food and donations we and our country bring forward in gratitude to God and in blessing to others in need!
Since I have gotten here, donations from before the pandemic have been sitting in an account for the Bread table. A couple of years ago it was my intention to divide the funds three ways for organizations who assist those in need of food in Eastchester, Yonkers and Manhattan. For various reasons the intention never materialized.
After meeting this past week with Father Eric Cruz, the Director of Catholic Charities for Westchester, the Bronx, Putnam and Dutchess Counties, and hearing that the usual government funding they and other organizations have received in the past for Thanksgiving is not available, I decided to discuss things with Virginia Holek.
IHM, therefore, will be giving $10,925.03 for Thanksgiving meals and/or for supermarket cards for those our Archdiocesan Catholic Charities are hoping to feed this coming week.
Do look into visiting the Marian Shrine (Sunday) or Sacred Heart in Dobbs Ferry (Monday) to venerate the relic of Saint Jude!
More information is below.
I look forward to our Religious Education Thanksgiving Prayer service Monday at 7:00pm in the church!
I would like to say a word of gratitude to Larry Harris who has been our cantor at IHM for a number of years. Larry has informed us of his decision to move on and begin a new chapter in his life. We will miss his presence each weekend!
On behalf of IHM, I would like to wish Larry and his family all the best and the Lord's blessings of health and peace.
Below is Larry's letter to all of us.
A blessed Sunday and Thanksgiving week to all!
Msgr. Sweeney, Fr. Thumma, Dr. Adamo, and the Parishioners of Immaculate Heart of Mary:
With heavy heart, I am resigning from my position as cantor with Immaculate Heart of Mary, effective November 13, 2023. I have given much thought and consideration to my decision.
While I have enjoyed my time here at IHM, I believe this is the right step for me at this time. I appreciate your continued support and all the times you prayed for God's healing, during my life-threatening illnesses. Parishioners here at IHM have been graciously supportive throughout my 15 years with this church family. I thank God for bringing me to this holy church community.
Collaboration with the IHM choir, has been a great joy to me; and this parish is fortunate to have such a talented, technically proficient, and liturgically minded Music Director/Organist, Dr. Laurie Adamo.
In my 50 years of working as a cantor within the Roman Catholic Church, never have I witnessed such a unique communal expression of love. It’s been my great honor to lead the IHM parishioners in prayer through song.
The parishioners, clergy, staff, and volunteers, with the guidance of a loving pastor, work as a family, to provide the most welcoming church community I have ever seen, anywhere. For that I am so grateful.
All my best,
Larry Harris
