On this mountain the Lord of hosts
will destroy
the veil that veils all peoples,
the web that is woven over all nations;
he will destroy death forever.

My dear friends,
The Scripture that I have chosen above comes from this Sunday's first reading - the Prophet Isaiah (25:6-10a). Last Saturday that veil and web of death was unfurled once again in our world in terrorist atrocities in Israel. May I express my condolences, prayers and solidarity with our Jewish friends and neighbors in our parish and local communities. May I invite all at IHM to continue our prayers for peace and justice in the Middle East.
Allow me to include the statement from this past Wednesday of the Archbishop of Boston, Sean Cardinal O'Malley, OFM, Capuchin:
"The sad and tragic historical truth is that the people of the Middle East have long suffered the scars and burdens of war. Even in this historical perspective, the massive military assault by Hamas on the State of Israel and its citizens stands as one of the worst moments in this long history. This act of aggression requires a clear condemnation in human, moral and legal terms. Both the purpose of the attack and its barbaric methods are devoid of moral or legal justification. There is no room for moral ambiguity on this issue. Resisting such terrorism and aggression is the moral duty of states to be carried out within moral limits.
While such moral judgement is necessary at this time, my primary focus as a Catholic bishop is one of prayer, condolence and sympathy for those who have lost parents, spouses and children during this past week. These sentiments extend also to the Palestinian civilian community and families in this conflict, for death is never confined to one side in war.
The United States is home to the largest Jewish community outside of Israel and many members of that community live in the Archdiocese of Boston. To them I offer solidarity and support in the midst of your suffering and sorrow.
As is his custom in addressing war and conflict, Pope Francis has affirmed the right of states and people to defend themselves while observing moral limits, and also urging every effort possible to move from conflict to its just resolution. As a step in that process I echo the Holy Father’s request that the hostages be released. I join the Holy Father in his pastoral care for all in war and his prayer for a just peace."
And let me share the sentiments of our own Archbishop of New York, Timothy Cardinal Dolan from last Sunday:
"Here in Rome, the city is safe, quiet, reverent this Sunday morning of the Christian sabbath.
From here in Rome, my heart goes out to the assaulted people of Israel, and to our Jewish community we cherish as friends and neighbors back home in New York, realizing with tears that their sabbath yesterday was anything but peaceful.
A secure and safe home, surely intended by God for all His Children, wherever they may be. To have that home attacked is a sacrilege; to defend that home is righteous.
To the urgent appeals of Pope Francis this Sunday; to the pleas of my brother bishops back home in the United States; to the concerns and condolences of those brothers and sisters gathered here in Rome for the synod of bishops, I sure add my own."

Yesterday, October 13th was the anniversary of the last apparition of Our Lady of Fatima in 1917 and the great "Miracle of the Sun" witnessed by 70,000 people in Portugal. May we heed our spiritual Mother's voice from over a century ago and take up and pray our Rosaries as we beg of God this gift of peace that we so need, beginning in our own hearts and families and spreading to the whole world.

This year as we pray Our Lady’s Rosary and other prayers in her honor, we invoke her blessings on marriage and the family and on our country and the world, and especially for Peace in the Ukraine and in the Middle East. This Rally is one of 20,000 rosary rallies, organized by America Needs Fatima, that will take place all over the United States. October 13th is the day the sun danced at Fatima Portugal. Christmas Wreath Fundraiser
It is that most wonderful time of the year again! The Boy Scouts are launching their annual Christmas Wreath Fundraiser. The funds raised are used 100% to run the troop and provide the scouts with a robust program. The Scouts will be taking orders for fresh balsam wreaths, centerpiece, and crosses before and after all Masses this weekend - October 14th and 15th. The expected delivery date for the wreaths this year is after all Masses the weekend of November 18th and the 19th. Please support our Scout Troop and purchase a beautiful balsam wreath, centerpiece or Cross!!

Our 8th grade Religious Education Students shared their first Confirmation activity. They each received a book which contained Catholic Saints and information regarding each Saint and their life. The children had to match the Saint with the information that was provided to them. It was an enjoyable time while they were also able to learn about many saints. After learning about the Saints, some students were able to choose at that time their Saint they will take as their patron in Confirmation!

Friends, today’s Gospel likens the kingdom of God to a king who gives a wedding feast for his son. The biblical authors couldn’t find a more apt metaphor for the coming together of divinity and humanity than a wedding banquet. God and humanity are married, and they are surrounded by joy, peace, celebration, and good food.
What was Jesus’ strategy? Open table-fellowship; outreach to all, to the righteous and the unrighteous, to the healthy and the sick, to the mainstream and the marginalized. Here comes everybody. You don’t have to be good to receive God’s grace; that’s why they call it “grace.”
But then something puzzling emerges. When the king comes to welcome his guests, he finds someone not properly dressed: “The king said to him, ‘My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?’” It was customary at the time (as it still is) for people to come to a wedding dressed up.
The play here is between grace and works. We can refuse the invitation altogether, or we can refuse the transformation that should follow from grace. We have to cooperate with grace, donning the wedding garment of love, forgiveness, peace, and nonviolence.

Dear Friends in the Lord:
On October 22, World Mission Sunday, we stand in solidarity with the Missions of the Church in the annual worldwide Eucharistic celebration. As I write to you today, Iexpress my gratitude forlast year's archdiocesan contribution of $337,162. Pope Francis reflects on this year's theme "Hearts on Fire, feet on the move." Here the Holy Father invites us to kindle the fire of Christ's love in our hearts and to actively share this warmth with the world. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, we go forth and bring the Good News to all the corners of the world.
Blessed Pauline Jaricot, a lay French woman founded the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in 1822 and is an essential aid for the Church's missionary work. In the United States, we as the Church have benefitted from these donations; up until 1908, we received close to 7 million dollars, equivalent of over 250 million today.
The collection taken up at all Masses on World Mission Sunday assists the
Holy Father meet his Petrine obligation to build the Church in over 1,100 dioceses and territories that are too young and or too poor to sustain themselves. Offerings support the formation of seminarians, men, and women religious, assist in the construction of schools and orphanages and enables missionaries to build churches in remote and resource-limited areas, and to supply essential works to proclaim the Gospel and celebrate the Sacraments.
I encourage your generosity on World Mission Sunday while keeping your hearts aflame and your feet moving. Your prayers remain your greatest gift, and your financial support is life-giving to our brothers and sisters in the world's most vulnerable communities.

A bassinette is set up in front of The Christ The King Altar and will be there for the entire month of October. Bringing a little comfort to our troops
Operation Cornerstone will be collecting food items, toiletries and sundries to send to our soldiers who are serving overseas and will not be home for the holidays. We will be partnering with United For The Troops again this year, who will pick up the donations from IHM, package and then mail the boxes to the troops. Any monetary donations to help defray the cost of mailing the packages can be left at the rectory.
Suggested donations are:
Food: Pringles (snack size), Trail Mix, instant oatmeal, granola bars, power bars, nuts, Slim Jims, Beef Jerky, Pop Tarts, Easy Mac Microwave Cups, ramen noodles, tuna fish, canned chicken, spam, sardines, peanut butter (plastic only), jelly & jam (plastic only), cereals (individual size), chili, stew, pasta, soup, canned fruit (16 oz or smaller), gum & Lifesavers, coffee (1 lb or less), coffee filters, hot chocolate packets, tea (small boxes), drink mixes (single serve).

Our recent Runs were very successful and we found homes for ALL donated items! We thank everyone for their generosity. There is much need in this metro area and all donations help.

As part of this revival, the Church in the State of New York will gather on October 20 – 22 at Our Lady of the Martyrs Shrine, located in Auriesville, New York, for a Eucharistic Congress. I encourage all in the Archdiocese of New York to attend the Congress, especially on Saturday, October 21st, which will feature a special Mass at 11 a.m. celebrated by Bishop Terry LaValley, followed by a Eucharistic Procession in the afternoon. In addition, there will be engaging speakers, lively music, opportunities for confession and eucharistic adoration, time to socialize, food available (although feel free to bring your own picnic), and so much more!

- IHM High School of Religion (HSOR): HSOR welcomes all high school students to our gatherings every Wednesday from 7:30-9:00PM in the Lower Church. We offer a fun and relaxing faith community of service projects, Prayer & Pizza, Game Nights, Christmas party, sacraments, lively discussions, Open Gym and Tee Shirt Away. - IHM Choir: The Children's Choir is open to all students from grades 2-8 and they sing at the 9:00AM Children's Mass on most Sundays of the school year. The Adult Choir is open to anyone high school age and above and they sing weekly at the 10:30AM Mass (and holidays). - IHM Bible Discussion Group: All are welcome to join at 7pm in the lower Church for a lively discussion on the Gospel According to Saint Mark. Tuesdays from 7-8:30pm in the lower Church while we read, reflect on and discuss the Gospel of Mark - learning from each other how the living Word guides us along our journey toward God, our Father. Refreshments are available for participants. All are welcome!
- IHM School of Community: this group meets on Wednesdays at 7:00PM in the IHM Rectory Conference Room or Library to look at our daily life and discover who we are as Christians. The text discussed is "The Religious Sense" by Father Luigi Giussani. - IHM Troop 2 (Boy Scouts): this group welcomes 5th through 8th grade boys interested in outdoor adventure. - IHM Centering Prayer Group: The Centering Prayer Group will not be meeting for the remainder of the month of October. Our next session will be on November 1st. The group normally meets on Wednesdays at 10:00AM in the Church Library. Newcomers are always welcome. Meetings last around 45-60 minutes. The format includes: 20 minutes of Centering Prayer (a silent prayer form in the Christian contemplative tradition in which we seek to open our minds and hearts to the Divine Life within), Lectio Divina (a prayerful reading of Scripture) and a brief discussion. - Beyond "Pro-Life" vs. "Pro-Choice", an interactive conversation with Maria McFadden Maffucci, President of the Human Life Foundation and Editor-in-Chief of the Human Life Review.
