My dear friends,
What a perfect Sunday Gospel, the Parable of the Vineyard, to let those you know (or yourself), who are interested in becoming Catholic, or perhaps baptized Catholics who would like to receive Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation to complete their Christian Initiation, or those who are seeking and wish to explore more about the Church and what we believe, how we worship God, the life of discipleship and how we pray! Whether we are in the vineyard - that is the Church / Kingdom of Heaven / New Israel of Jews and Gentiles called by the Lord Jesus into One Body - whether we are in the vineyard from the beginning of our lives, somewhere in the middle or come to this precious gift at the last hour of our lives, may we realize that we labor with Jesus for the salvation of the world and desire nothing less than the reward of His Eternal Presence. As Saint Paul knew - "But for me, Life is Christ!"

I am grateful to Father Ignatius, OP, who did a fine job bringing us deeper into the Eucharistic dimension of John's Gospel this past Monday eve - thank you! I am happy the Parish Council was able to begin that evening so that, after considering the Gift of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we may be inspired this upcoming year!
Please welcome to IHM this weekend, Tom Piro of Saint Joseph's Seminary! Tom is in the last two years, God-willing, of his theological preparation and formation for Priesthood and will be here to invite us to participate in the annual collection for the Seminary! Tom is from the Diocese of Camden, whose Bishop was formerly of New York - Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan! Tom will address us after the homily.

Let me just say Wow once more on an amazing Parish Picnic last Sunday and to thank so many for all they did to make it possible: Camille Roche as a Parish Council Member who once again organized, planned, coordinated with various volunteers as well as the Village of Scarsdale, and oversaw it all coming together!
To the Tom and Rosemary Roche Family, who helped move tables from the parish and school (thank you Tracy!) to get us set up and broken down.
To other Parish Council Members - Joe Brusco for hospitality and welcoming; Santiago Rudloff, one of our Teen Reps, who oversaw and coordinated the dessert table with Confirmation Candidates (thank you to so many of you who baked and bought delicious desserts - what was not eaten made their way to HOPE); and to Scoutmaster Brian Bandsma of IHM Troop 2 who organized all the games for the youngsters!
It was a great treat to have Scarsdale Fire Department speaking with and showing the younger parishioners the rig!
It is such a blessing to be part of a vibrant parish and to be off to a wonderful start this Fall!

Know that a first cousin and good friend will be getting married that weekend, so I will be unable to attend, but hope we can get some IHM representation!
The Rectory office will not be open today (Saturday). This Monday the hours will be ONLY until 5pm and regular hours will resume this Tuesday.
Next Sunday, October 1st, IHM will participate in the Life Chain on Post Road from 1-2pm to peacefully and prayerfully witness to unborn human life and support for mothers in crisis pregnancies. We will also have Eucharistic Adoration in the church during that time to pray for the Life Chain efforts across the country. As disciples of Jesus, who seek to Love our Neighbor, sometimes we know that it places us in situations where God will ask us to communicate His truth in a charitable way for the good of souls.

Friends, the parable of the vineyard that Jesus tells in today’s Gospel is one of the most disturbing of all. Keep in mind that upsetting us is one of the main purposes of parables, stories that invent new worlds by inverting this one.
We know the outline of the story well: a landowner goes out to hire workers for his field, hiring them at different times during the day. Then, at the close of work, he pays each the same wage. When those hired earlier complain, the owner contends, “Am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?”
Do any of us really find this answer satisfying? Don’t most of us instinctually side with the complainers? Have you noticed that the one virtue that even little children seem implicitly to understand is justice? “It’s just not fair!” Well, this just doesn’t seem fair.
But we should squint at this story through the lens of the prophet Isaiah’s reminder that God’s ways are not our ways. Does this story represent an undermining of justice? No; rather, it is a showing forth of the justice that flows from God’s vision of things.

2023-2024 Registration is still open
for Kindergarten and First Grade!
Online registration for the 2023-2024 school year for grades Kindergarten and 1st Grade IS STILL OPEN! Classes begin on October 2nd. All returning families were emailed registration instructions. New families to our program can find the link to the registration form on our website.
In-person classes are held once per week. This 2023-2024 Class schedule will not be based on School District, as in previous years, and will offer more flexibility for parents. Registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis.

Respect Life Sunday, on October 1st, kicks off Respect Life Month, a time to pray for the protection of all human life. You can join one of the Life Chains, a peaceful and prayerful public witness for an end to abortion that offers a message of mercy and healing for those suffering as a result of abortion. Or you can participate in Rosary Coast to Coast, a movement to unite the nation in praying the Holy Rosary for healing of our country and a return to holiness. You are invited to the 2023 PUBLIC SQUARE ROSARY RALLY on Saturday, October 14th at 11:30AM -12:00 noon. Will take place in the South Parking lot of IHM Church in Scarsdale . This year as we pray Our Lady’s Rosary and other prayers in her honor, we invoke her blessings on marriage and the family and on our country and the world, and especially for Peace in the Ukraine. This Rally is one of 20,000 rosary rallies, organized by America Needs Fatima, that will take place all over the United States. As part of this revival, the Church in the State of New York will gather on October 20 – 22 at Our Lady of the Martyrs Shrine, located in Auriesville, New York, for a Eucharistic Congress. I encourage all in the Archdiocese of New York to attend the Congress, especially on Saturday, October 21st, which will feature a special Mass at 11 a.m. celebrated by Bishop Terry LaValley, followed by a Eucharistic Procession in the afternoon. In addition, there will be engaging speakers, lively music, opportunities for confession and eucharistic adoration, time to socialize, food available (although feel free to bring your own picnic), and so much more!

SCHOOL OF COMMUNITY
School of Community is an occasion to meet weekly to look at our daily life and discover who we are as Christians. Our text will be “The Religious Sense” by Father Luigi Giussani.
Father Giussani is the founder of the Catholic Lay Movement Communion and Liberation. The “Religious Sense” is an exploration of the search for the meaning in life. Monsignor Lorenzo Albacete calls it simply “The grammar of Christianity”.
Meetings will take place on Wednesdays at 7:00PM in the IHM Library. We also connect on Zoom with those unable to join us (please contact the rectory and ask to be put in contact with Carolyn). Come and see.

- A Celebration of Saint Padre Pio on Sunday, September 24th from 11:30AM -3:30PM at the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement At Graymoor (Route 9, Garrison, NY). Mass in Italian at 12:30PM in Our Lady of the Atonement Chapel followed by a Blessing of the Padre Pio Statue. - The Maryknoll Sisters Annual Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, September 30th, from 11:00AM to 4:00PM (Rain Date: Sunday, October 1st) at the Maryknoll Sisters Center, 10 Pinesbridge Road in Ossining, NY. We hope you will help us spread the word about our event, all proceeds raised from the festival will benefit the elderly Sisters living at our Center who require care. Free admission/free parking! The discussion will center around how people of faith can find common ground to support women and families, and bridge the divide that has cleft our society and distorted the issue of abortion - Wednesday, October 25th, 7:00-9:00PM - OLPH Auditorium, 575 Fowler Ave, Pelham Manor. This is a free event sponsored by the OLPH / St Catharine's Dignity of Life Committee.
