Father Thumma is away visiting relatives in the USA and will be back this week.

Please excuse me from the 12 noon Mass this Sunday as I will need to head down to Blessed Sacrament Church in the City for my cousin's (and godmother's) first grandchild's baptism!
The Solemnity of the Assumption of Blessed Mary celebrates that at the end of her earthly life she was assumed body and soul into heaven. It is usually a big holiday (and HOLY day) in various parts of the world. It is a Holy Day of Obligation for us this Tuesday (Monday Vigil) and an important opportunity to reflect on and worship God for what He did in Holy Mary and what His plan is for us by His Mercy and grace.

The Solemnity of the Assumption is a Holy Day of Obligation
The Solemnity of the Assumption, celebrated each year on August 15th, commemorates the event at the end of the Blessed Mary's life on earth, when God assumed her both soul and body into heaven, not allowing the corruption of the grave to touch her. As the image of the Church, the special blessing she received at her Assumption gives us the preview of our own bodily resurrection in the Lord at the end of time.
The Rectory will be closed on Tuesday, August 15th in observance of The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Mary was assumed, body and soul, into heaven.
What does this mean? This doesn't mean that Mary floated "up, up and away" into the clouds, but rather that she fully entered into that final harmony and union with God (body and soul), seeing God face-to-face, that goal to which we are all called.
Mary is the "model disciple," as St. Augustine noted, and, having been preserved from sin, she was preserved from corruption. Now Mary intercedes for us and cheers us on that we too might participate in this life-giving relationship with Jesus Christ.

Sunday, August 13 | Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time | Matthew 14:22-33
Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus rescues Peter and says: “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” When we live wrapped up around our own egos and their fears, we inhabit the narrow space of the pusilla anima (the little soul), but when we forget our awful seriousness, when we live in a risky freedom, we inhabit the infinite expanse of the magna anima (the great soul).
Holy people are those who realize that they participate in something and Someone infinitely greater than themselves. Far from crushing them, this awareness makes them great. In a hundred ways, our theological and spiritual tradition attempts to cultivate the great soul, to lure us into that wonderful conviction that it is not about us.
John’s Gospel says that in his youth, Peter labored under the illusion that he could control his life: he walked where he liked and he tied his own belt. But in his old age—the time of wisdom—he will realize that his life has been under the direction of a Power that his ego cannot begin to manipulate. In taking him where he does not want to go, this Power will introduce him to the magna anima.

- We are looking for more volunteers to cook for the HOPE Community Supper Program. The need is greater than ever. Cooking is done at home and delivered to the Church, it is then picked up and delivered to HOPE Community Services in New Rochelle (www.hopecommunityservices.org).

2023-2024 Registration
On the day of your child's/children's Baptism, the Church pledged to you, the parents, our assistance in raising them in the practice of the faith to keep God's commandments as Jesus taught us, by loving God and our neighbor.
Here at Immaculate Heart of Mary, our Religious Education Program is a part of this integral formation in the faith that would include daily prayer at home, family participation in Sunday Mass (and on Holy Days of Obligation), periodic Confession, as well as the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy flowing out from your dinner table.
Online registration for the 2023-2024 school year for grades Kindergarten through 8th Grade opened on Wednesday, June 6, 2023. All returning families were emailed registration instructions. New families to our program can find the link to the registration form on our website.
In-person classes are held once per week. This 2023-2024 Class schedule will not be based on School District, as in previous years, and will offer more flexibility for parents. Registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis.

regarding the Mission Coop Appeal
that will take place at IHM

My name is Rev. Robert Ngageno, a diocesan priest of the Catholic Diocese of Nebbi- Uganda. I was asked by my Bishop, Rt. Rev. Raphael p’Mony Wokorach (MCCJ) to coordinate the mission activities of the Diocese. The purpose of this appeal is to ask for your Spiritual, Moral and Financial support.
The Diocese was created on February 23, 1996, by St. John Paul II . To date, we have 20 parishes. 25 religious communities, 69 diocesan priests, 5 missionary priests, located in the rural agricultural region with poor infrastructures (roads, water, electricity, educational facilities, inadequate health facilities, few churches for prayers) Population of 667.917 where about 80% are Catholics (528.178).
We are grateful to His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan together with the Office of the Propagation of the Faith and Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish for your assistance. Bible Discussion Group study of St. Mark
will kick off on Tuesday, September 5th
The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Bible Discussion Group has assembled on Tuesday evenings for over a year to reflect on the Gospels of Saints Luke and Matthew, the Letters of Saint Peter and the Book of Ruth. Between 15 and 25 parishioners gathered to read, analyze, and discuss Sacred Scripture from 7:00-8:30PM in the lower church while enjoying a little dessert and each other’s company.
The Group is taking the summer off, but all parishioners and friends are invited to join us when we begin examining the Gospel According to Saint Mark in preparation for next Liturgical Year (B starts in Advent 2023) on Tuesday, September 5th at 7:00PM in the lower church.
All voices are welcome, so please consider joining the discussion when the new school year begins and probe the Scriptures with greater insight from the Gospel study used, your own prayerful considerations and that of your fellow Christians journeying towards our eternal home together.

The IHM Class of 1956 reunion will take place on Saturday, August 12th. The class members will gather in the IHM parking lot at 5:00PM and then take a brief tour of the school. LAMP Catholic Ministries: Seeking Missionaries
Do you feel called to live the Gospel radically? LAMP Catholic Ministries is currently seeking candidates to serve as missionaries with the materially poor in New York City. LAMP Missionaries accompany and serve the materially poor and homeless in the spirit of St. Francis through street evangelization, ministering in materially poor parishes, providing crisis pregnancy support, offering a Catholic faith presence in shelters for homeless families through prayer and Scripture sharing groups, and much more. For any who have sensitivities to Gluten, know that Low Gluten hosts (containing less than 0.002% gluten, <20ppm, fully in accord with Church Canon Law) are available for receiving our Lord in Holy Communion. For those unable to have any gluten, we are happy to offer Holy Communion from a separate Chalice. Please speak with a priest before Mass.

Bring your lawn chairs and blankets for an open-air concert, worship (Mass and Adoration), games, exhibitions, food for purchase, and the gift shop.
