My dear friends,
We are grateful for Bishop Bonnici Confirming our 109 young men and women this past Wednesday!
To Mrs. Laura Covais, our IHM Coordinator of Religious Education, for all she did to prepare the students and to organize this wonderful Sacrament, thank you!
I would also like to thank Mrs. Tracy Keelin, our IHM School Principal, all of the Catechists and the staff of the Religious Education Office for their part in this special day!
To celebrate the birthday of the Church, please wear red to Mass this weekend (red is used as the liturgical color for the Holy Spirit). Let us also give a warm welcome to the Little Sisters of the Poor who will be here begging on behalf of their elderly poor whom they serve.
This evening we will have the Pentecost Vigil with four Old Testament Readings that prepare us for the coming of the Holy Spirit (Tower of Babel, God making the Israelites His People at Mount Sinai and revealing His Presence in fire, the Prophet Ezekiel's vision of Israel coming back to life through the breath of the Spirit, and the Prophet Joel foretelling that the Spirit will be poured out on all peoples), followed by the Epistle and Gospel.
This Sunday will also conclude the Easter Season.
Monday will be a beautiful Memorial of Blessed Mary, Mother of the Church, since she was in prayer with the Apostles when the Holy Spirit fell upon them in the Upper Room in Jerusalem (the place of the Last Supper).
For all who will be headed down to Deacon Carlos Germosen's Priestly Ordination at Saint Patrick's Cathedral today (parish bus leaves at 7:15am!), you are in for a treat and a special Liturgy and Mass of the Church!
Just as the Church envisions the Sacrament of Marriage in a family to be the source of divine grace and presence of Jesus through the spouses - and so important for the family to celebrate the anniversary, so too in the spiritual family of the Church it is through the Sacrament of Holy Orders that divine life is communicated to all of us, the Lord's faithful people. Because of what will happen to Carlos and his classmates this morning, the Eucharist will be able to be offered in parishes, the forgiveness of sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be possible along with the healing of the body and soul in the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, spiritual Fatherhood will be made present to the Church and the priestly blessing will be able to be bestowed.
FATHER Carlos Germosen will come to IHM on Sunday, June 4th to celebrate the 10:30am Mass, followed by an opportunity to receive his first priestly blessing in the lower church. There will be a reception for all who participate.
The Parish Council Elections are being extended for these next two weekends. In recent years 200+ to 300+ parishioners have voted. Since we only had slightly over 100 who voted this past week (don't worry we do not know who has what votes), it is being extended to make sure we have as much of the parish participating as possible. Paper ballots will also be supplied at Sunday Masses for parishioners 18 years and older. These will be tabulated and verified by Frank DeSimone, our Receptionist, and Rita McCabe, our parish technology person - both non-parishioners so as to keeps the votes confidential.
Please join me in welcoming back to IHM for the months of June and July, Father Raja Pogula! He is a classmate of Father Thumma and was with us for last August.
Thank you for your reception of our friendly reminders concerning our Lord Jesus' Presence in the Eucharist, and how we should reverently receive Him and prepare ourselves for this great Mystery and gift of our faith.
To clarify one point, the Church asks that we fast for at least one hour before receiving Holy Communion (water and medicine may be taken at any time).
The exception from the one hour fast is as follows: "Those who are advanced in age or who suffer from any infirmity, as well as those who take care of them, can receive the Most Holy Eucharist even if they have taken something during the previous hour." (The 1973 directive that it be a 15 minute fast for the sick is not mentioned in the new Code of Church law from 1983 and would no longer be in effect.)
Given the Memorial Day Holiday, we will have only one Mass at 9:00am followed by a Eucharistic Holy Hour in the church. Miraculous Medal Novena, Rosary and Confession will be offered. The parish offices will be closed for the day.
May God give eternal rest to those who laid down their lives in the service of our country!
A blessed Pentecost Sunday to you!
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
And You shall renew the face of the earth.
