My dear friends,

A blessed month of our spiritual Mother Mary, Ever Virgin! May she intercede for all our wonderful Parish Council nominees and guide all parishioners who will be voting (please see below).

As is customary here at IHM and many Catholic Parishes, we will have First Holy Communions today and next Saturday! The Eucharist is the "Source and Summit" of our faith as the Church teaches at the Second Vatican Council (Dogmatic Constuitution on the Church - Lumen Gentium, 11)! Since he couldn't remember his baptism, this was the most important day in the life of Saint John Paul II that he told children one day!

Moms and Dads, please have your children then wear their First Communion outfits to Sunday (Saturday Vigil) Mass for the next 2 weekends so as to be in the procession both into and out from Mass.

At the 9am Family Masses the next two weekends, we will have a May Crowning at each one.

This Sunday after the 9am Family Mass our Parish Council - One Community will be sponsoring a Planting Event in the lower church! Please see more information below.

While it was my intention to offer an IHM Mission before Pentecost of this year, given the schedule that week of the Ascension and its Vigil, it is best to postpone such a Mission until sometime next academic year.

Please stay tuned for more information in the coming months.

Ascension Thursday is May 18th (Vigil May 17th) for the Church Province that incorporated all of New York State with the Archdiocese of New York. Please make appropriate future plans for this important Holy Day of Obligation.

(On a side note, I understand 8th graders at Eastchester Middle School are headed to Washington, DC, for their tradition trip. Since the Archdiocese of Washington transfers the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord Jesus to following Sunday, they are not obligated to attend Mass in DC when they are away this year during those weekdays. Those 8th graders will, in fact, 'miss' the Ascension this year!)

Please plan to attend Deacon Carlos Germosen's Priesthood Ordination on Saturday, May 27th - something each Catholic should do at least once in a lifetime! Do sign up for parish transportation, if you wish, by calling the Rectory (914-723-0276) so that we can make appropriate plans. Please take note that Father Thumma and I will be unavailable for any funerals that day.

The future-Father Carlos will return to IHM on Sunday, June 4th to celebrate the 10:30am Mass and then to give us his First Priesty Blessing in the lower church.

I am sure a number of you are already up watching the British Coronation when the electronic bulletin goes out at 6:00am! It is my understanding that the King's ceremony will include an anointing with blest Chrism oil. Also, his procession will have a relic of the True Cross.

Sacred Chrism oil is blessed for us in the Archdiocese by Cardinal Dolan each Holy Week and is used in Baptisms, Confirmation and Ordinations. In Baptism it signifies that a person has been anointed by the Holy Spirit and is made a member of Jesus Christ: Priest, Prophet and King! As we will observe such a grand temporal anointing, how much greater our Christian dignity that we will not fully understand and behold until heaven, please God!

IHM Parish has had a relic of the True Cross for decades. Thanks to Ms. Mary Wolff, it was able to be brought back and touched to the important places of Jesus in the Holy Land, including where it was found by the Roman Emperor Constantine's mother, Saint Helena in the 320s near Calvary. Thank you Mary!

Recently, Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance was honored with the Scarsdale Foundation’s first ever Spotlight Award. In appreciation for this award, and in cooperation with Westchester based volunteer ambulance organizations the Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps will be offering a community wide CPR training program taking place on May 7th at Scarsdale High School.

Fee: $10 per person

This CPR class is geared to those family members who are 12 and older with the ability to deliver chest compressions while kneeling on the floor. You and your loved ones will learn child and adult Hands-Only CPR, how to use an AED and perform a choking rescue. The two-hour program will include class instruction and hands-on practice using CPR manikins and AEDs.

This AHA Family & Friends® CPR Class is for people who want to acquire CPR skills but do not require certification for their workplace or career. The course is perfect for community groups, students, grandparents, moms, dads, and anyone looking to improve their lifesaving skills and be prepared for an emergency. Since seating is limited, you need to register for this event.

Sunday, May 7, 2023 | Fifth Sunday of Easter| John 14:1-12

Friends, today in the Last Supper discourse, Jesus reveals the mutual indwelling—the coinherence—of the Father and the Son.

John Dunne told us that “no man is an island.” Rather, we are all interconnected. How do we identify ourselves? Almost exclusively through the naming of relationships. Coinherence is indeed the name of the game, at all levels of reality.

And Jesus lays out for us the coinherence that obtains within the very existence of God. “Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?” Though Father and Son are really distinct, they are utterly implicated in each other by a mutual act of love.

Now, the impossibly good news is that Jesus and the Father have invited us to participate in the life that they share, to enter fully into their coinherence. “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.” What is the “house” of the Father but his own life? Jesus’ point is that there is infinite room within the expanse of God’s life. The love between the Father and the Son—which is called “the Holy Spirit”—can be penetrated, entered into, participated in.

Police departments from around the Hudson Valley took part in the Torch Run Relay for Special Olympics. News 12 Photojournalist Kurt Fischer followed them on part of the run, which goes from Yonkers to Peekskill.

The Special Olympic Torch passed along Post Road and Immaculate Heart of Mary. IHM Parish School was out to cheer them on! CLICK HERE to see the video!

IHM’S ANNUAL BABY BOTTLE COLLECTION

FOR EXPECTANT MOTHER CARE

Each year this simple collection raises thousands of dollars for Moms and children – with all profits going to support Expectant Mother Care (EMC) in its mission to help mothers and families in crisis pregnancies. Funds support mobile units, free ultrasounds and testing, pregnancy assistance, residences for Mothers, and physical, mental, emotional and spiritual support for families. Please pick up an empty baby bottle on Mother’s Day, May 14th and fill it with change, checks, prayers and love! On Fathers' Day you may return the bottle filled with donations for EMC. Please make out your checks to Expectant Mother Care.

IHM Women's Prayer Group: Weekly prayer gatherings for women are offered each Thursday from 7:00-8:00PM in the Church Library. For more information, please contact the Rectory (914-723-0276 or ihmchurch@ihmscarsdale.org).

Although Soviet communism ended in the early 1990s. Its destructive effects linger in the societies where it once ruled.

Just last year, I made a visit to the border countries of Poland and Slovakia with the Catholic Near East Wellfare Association (CNEWA), of which I am chairman, to show our solidarity and concern for the people of Ukraine and to remind them that they are not alone, and they have good friends who will support them.

Every year, the USCCB mandates a collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Your participation on May 14 will express your care and support for the people throughout the region and in Ukraine, especially in times of crisis and disruption. I am asking that you prayerfully consider as an act of mercy and charity a generous donation to this distinctive offering.

Couples of the Archdiocese of New York celebrating 50 years of marriage anytime during 2023 are invited to attend the Golden Jubilee Wedding Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, June 4th, at 2:30PM. We invite you to the 55th Annual Salute To Seniors, with three safe, outdoor tented, regional events in Northern, Central, and Southern Westchester. This year's Salute to Senior events will be held at various Westchester County Parks from 10:00AM to 12:30PM on Wednesday, May 10th, May 17th, and May 24th. Each Salute to Seniors event will feature information on programs, services, and products designed to make life better for our senior community, with a complimentary lunch and enjoyable music provided to the over 2,500 individuals expected to attend. The Vatican International Exhibit of Eucharistic Miracles is being held at the Marian Shrine, located at 174 Filors Lane, Stony Point, NY 10980 in Fr. Tae-Seok John Lee Hall from May 4th through May 9th. The Eucharistic Miracles Exhibit was created by Blessed Carlo Acutis and contains an extensive assortment of photographs and historical descriptions on 187 panels of many of the Eucharist miracles that took place throughout the world, and which have been recognized by the Church. The facilities at the Marian Shrine are handicapped accessible and there is no cost to attend this event.
