My dear friends,
Today, Saturday (March 25th), is nine months from Christmas! Following the inspiration of Pope Francis, the Solemnity of the Annunciation is a beautiful opportunity to renew our consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, our parish's patroness.
One theme that has hit me again and again at IHM and in the village (diagonal half of Scarsdale), town (northern part of Eastchester) and city (part of New Rochelle) where our parish bounds reach, is how much you appreciate and long for community! From a Christian perspective this is no surprise because being created in God's image, that image is Trinitarian, a communion of divine persons! The Church is meant to live this reality and it is no surprise that we see it in the secular order, too, with good communities.
Perhaps our Parish Ministries Fair, sponsored by our IHM Parish Council, will be the means to greater participation in the life of our parish community. A big thank you to our Chair, Eileen Tobin, for all she has done to get the date down and reach out to all the organizations and ministries involved. Please see the list and their descriptions attached in the bulletin below.
Another big thank you goes to John Larkin, Parish Council member and Knight of Columbus, who with his team of volunteers is going to make this weekend happen! Please come down after Mass to the lower church to browse, speak with members of the various groups for more information, to request more information AND have your photo taken as a parish household for our directory (individual, couple, family). The photographer will be available after the 5:30pm Vigil and 10:30am and 12 noon Sunday Masses. Some light refreshments are being provided by the local Knights of Columbus and some parishioners!
As per the archdiocesan financial policies, we priests cannot count the collection. It is put in sealed bags with the ushers and then opened in front of the team of our discreet counters (of which the teams alternate for another layer of financial transparency and there is always a second blind counting). It would be an important courtesy to them, for all the time and effort they volunteer throughout the year to our parish, if those parishioners utilizing the parish envelopes would write the amount of the donation on the outside of the envelope on the space provided. Thank you for your attention to this request.
It was great to see some of the parish Girl Scouts selling cookies last weekend!
This weekend we will have the 3rd and final Scrutiny for our Catechumens (the Elect) at the 12:00 noon Mass.
It is a good tour de force with Fr. Thumma to offer Confessions to the elementary students of our Religious Education Program and School. They continue and so too do the Stations of the Cross for all the students.
Something warmed my heart this past Tuesday! IHM has a very long tradition assisting Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorn, NY. I believe the Saint Veronica Guild would sew necessary items for the patients. Recently, the Sisters at Rosary Hill lifted Covid restrictions and our IHM School Kindergarten class took advantage of that to visit! Under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. Veronica Gayanelo, and under the guidance of the Kindergarten Assistant, Mrs. Patti MacGillivray, and a number of class Mothers, the children went to sing to some of the residents, Sisters and staff. I caught their last song and they were a big hit!
It warmed my heart because in 2000 when I was a seminarian and new deacon, my Mom was a patient of Rosary Hill, whose Religious Sisters care for terminally ill cancer patients. Amazing how things come full circle in life. It was a joy to see a handful of the Sisters whom I came to know 23 years ago going strong!
And for history or religion buffs, the Religious Community was founded by Rose Hawthorne, the daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne, the famous American novelist.

Pope Francis invites Catholics to renew consecration to Immaculate Heart of Mary on March 25

Pope Francis has invited Catholics to annually renew an act of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on March 25.
The solemnity of the Annunciation on Saturday marks one year since Pope Francis consecrated Russia and Ukraine to the Blessed Virgin Mary in St. Peter’s Basilica with a prayer asking for peace in the world.
At the end of his general audience on March 22, the pope recalled his historic act of consecration and called on parish communities and prayer groups to annually renew the Marian consecration.
“Saturday will mark the solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, and our thoughts turn to March 25 last year when, in union with all the bishops of the world, we consecrated the Church and humanity, especially Russia and Ukraine, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary,” Pope Francis said.
“Let us not tire of entrusting the cause of peace to the Queen of Peace,” he said.
“Therefore, I would like to invite each believer and community, especially prayer groups, to renew every March 25 the act of consecration to Our Lady, so that she, who is Mother, may guard us all in unity and peace.”
Pope Francis also urged people not to forget to pray for “martyred Ukraine, which is suffering so much.”
Last year, Pope Francis asked all the bishops of the world to join him in consecrating Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, one month after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
From the tip of Florida to Seattle, every U.S. diocese participated in the consecration in one form or another. The bishop of Fairbanks prayed the consecration on the shores of the Bering Sea, facing Russia, his diocese’s neighbor just a few hundred miles to the west.
The act of consecration was also read simultaneously by Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the papal almoner, at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal.
In Moscow, Catholics tuned in and prayed along with a live broadcast of the pope’s consecration from the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

The Virgin Mary specifically asked that Russia be consecrated to her Immaculate Heart in the 1917 apparitions at Fatima.
The Vatican’s Dicastery for Divine Worship defines consecration to Mary as an overt recognition of the “singular role of Mary in the mystery of Christ and of the Church, of the universal and exemplary importance of her witness to the Gospel, of trust in her intercession, and of the efficacy of her patronage.”
In the past, several popes have consecrated the Church and world to Mary. Pope Pius XII consecrated the entire world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Oct. 31, 1942.
St. John Paul II — who consecrated the entire Church and world to Mary three times during his pontificate — taught that by consecrating oneself to Mary, we accept her help in offering ourselves fully to Christ.
Before praying the consecration last year, Pope Francis explained that it is “an act of complete trust on the part of children who, amid the tribulation of this cruel and senseless war that threatens our world, turn to their Mother, reposing all their fears and pain in her heart and abandoning themselves to her.”
“It means placing in that pure and undefiled heart, where God is mirrored, the inestimable goods of fraternity and peace, all that we have and are, so that she, the Mother whom the Lord has given us, may protect us and watch over us.”

Friends, today’s Gospel about the raising of Lazarus has a pointed message for us.
Everyone reading this is, to a degree, spiritually dead. Maybe you’re like Lazarus—four days in your tomb. Maybe you feel there is just no hope for the likes of you. I don’t care how far you’ve fallen. I don’t care how dead you are. The voice of Jesus can call you back to life, can pull you out of the tomb.
Listen to what Jesus says: “Untie him and let him go.” God hates death and the ways of death. He hates all the ways we’ve managed to tie ourselves up. He hates how we’ve wandered into tombs and graves.
Maybe you’re sunk in an addiction. Maybe you’ve done things you are so ashamed of that you can’t even bring yourself to speak of them. Maybe you’ve fallen out of relationship with the people you love the most. Maybe you’ve been a first-class jerk. Maybe you just feel you’re a failure. Maybe you’re terrified of dying. I don’t care. Listen for the voice!

April 3rd of Holy Week will be Reconciliation Monday in New York. Celebrate God’s Mercy. It is a great thing to hear about God’s merciful love. It is even better to experience it – personally. No matter how long it may have been since your last Confession – weeks, years or even decades – there is no time like the start of Holy Week to know the Mercy of God in the Sacrament of Penance. Seize this moment of grace at the start of Holy Week. Bring a friend!
The Religious Education children received their First Reconciliation this Monday, March 13th and Wednesday, March 15th during class time. The day began with a beautiful prayer service, after which the children attended Confession for the first time! They were all well prepared and did a wonderful job! A celebration followed in the Lower Church. Congratulations to all the Second Graders, all who made their First Confession and their families on receiving their Second Sacrament!
IHM Midnight Run - Donations Needed
Our next Midnight Run will be on Saturday, April 1st. Items needed most are new or gently used men's hoodies and sweatpants (sizes medium or large), backpacks for storage, and gently used or new men's sneakers/running shoes (sizes 9-12). The toiletry bags also need to be refurnished with travel size men's deodorant and toothpaste.
Please drop off all donations in the red boxes found at all entrances of the Church. We thank you all for your continued support without which these needs would not be met.

We are looking to expand the involvement of our parishioners in four important Liturgical Ministries:
- Altar Server - Grade 4 to college-aged
- Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion - Adult
- Lector - High School and older
- Usher - Adult
Please consider getting involved, your service will help our parish and offer you the opportunity to grow in a specific way in your faith. Support and training will be provided for all interested persons.

- IHM Women's Prayer Group: Weekly prayer gatherings for women are offered each Thursday from 7:00-8:00PM in the Church Library. For more information, please contact the Rectory (914-723-0276 or ihmchurch@ihmscarsdale.org).
- HSOR: IHM High School teens in grades 9 through 12 will gather again on Wednesday, March 29th at 7:30pm in the church. HSOR is "a night out in the middle of the week!" Some of our activities are: prayers and pizza, scavenger hunt, faith on film, basketball and more!
- Bible Discussion Group: on the Gospel of Matthew: Tuesdays from 7:00 - 8:30 PM in the lower church. Refreshments served. The group is discussing the Gospel According to St. Matthew. If you have any questions, please call Tom & Rosemary Roche at (914) 725-1148.
- Charismatic Prayer Meeting at the House of Prayer: On Mondays at 7:30PM in the Chapel & Thursdays of Prayer after the 9:00AM parish Mass.
- College Evenings: Following our last gathering this past week, please stay tuned as to our next opportunity to come together for fraternity, prayer, service and growth in faith! - The Centering Prayer Group meets on Wednesday's at 10:00AM in the Church Library. Newcomers are always welcome. Meetings last around 45-60 minutes. The format includes: 20 minutes of Centering Prayer (a silent prayer form in the Christian contemplative tradition in which we seek to open our minds and hearts to the Divine Life within), Lectio Divina (a prayerful reading of Scripture) and a brief discussion. - Boys 11 to 17 are invited to Join Immaculate Heart of Mary Boy Scout Troop 2 Scarsdale. Visit Boy Scout Troop 2 in the IHM lower Church (201 Boulevard, Scarsdale) on Thursday evenings at 7:30PM. Do you want to canoe, camp, go white water rafting, rock climb, repel . . . all while using life skills like first aid and CPR? Then come try us out!
