My dear friends,
It is edifying to see how the announced Mass Intentions are sought at IHM. As of Friday eve there are only 9 available and all at 6:45am! It is the hope of the annual Fall "roll-out" that with two weeks for 2 intentions per person, followed by another two weeks for 5 more intentions, and then the ability to request any more intentions after that, may allow for people to get important dates, such as anniversaries and at Mass times that they prefer to go (Saturday evenings, Sundays, etc.) right at the outset. Since IHM does fill up our calendar year by the Spring or earlier, what we put in place was a Mass offered usually on the First Saturday of each month at 8:30am for those who died the month prior. We automatically add those buried from IHM and include them by name, but please know it can be a wonderful opportunity to include other parishioners (or those who used to live here) or your family or names of your close friends. Please let the Rectory know by the Thursday beforehand, such as by February 2nd this week.
Coffee and Donuts will take place this Sunday in the Lower Church after the 9am Mass thanks to the generosity of the Nicholsons!
We give thanks to God for the blessing and source of grace our parish school is and we celebrate Catholic Schools Week at the 12noon Mass on Sunday! To our Principal, Mrs. Tracy Keelin, to all the families, teachers, staff and students who are a part of IHM School - God bless and thank you for the faith, hope and charity that you seek to let shine!
Please take a memorial card of our late Holy Father, as a keepsake and a reminder for prayers, available at the entrances to the church. Wednesday, January 31st will be the "month's mind" of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. We will continue to pray for his repose for this month and keep the purple and black mourning bunting up at the church and school until this date.
Thursday, February 2nd is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord 40 days after his birth - otherwise called Candlemas Day (since Jesus is the Light of the World entering the Jerusalem Temple). Please bring any candles you wish blessed to the 6:45am or 9am Masses on Thursday. We are keeping the church's Nativity and outside Rectory Christmas lights up through this day.
February 2nd is also the World Day of Consecrated Life - an opportunity to give thanks to God for the consecrated witness of our beloved Religious Sisters: Sister Nancy Kellar and Sr. Anna Roche (NY Sisters of Charity), and Sister Theresa Chen (Chinese Community of Saint Teresa)!
The Memorial of Saint Blaise will be Friday, February 3rd. This blessing will be given this week to the Religious Education, HSOR and School communities. Next Sunday we will give a general blessing to all at Mass and separately after Mass for those who request it.
This past week both the Parish Council and the Finance Committee met. More information will follow. This week I will meet with our Religious Education Advisory Board. Please also do not forget the January 31st deadline for the IHM Development Gala for the 95th Anniversary of our school! Letters for 2022 contributions for tax purposes will go out this week for all amounts above $100.

Sunday, January 29, 2023 | Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time| Matthew 5:1-12
Friends, our Gospel for today is one of the most beautiful and important in the New Testament: the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount, the eight Beatitudes. Why is it so important? Because it is the Son of God telling us how to be happy. It is the one who can’t be wrong telling us how to achieve that which each of us most basically wants. What could be more compelling?
At the heart of Jesus’ program are these Beatitudes: “Blessed are the merciful” and “Blessed are the peacemakers.” These name the very heart of the spiritual program, for they name the ways that we participate most directly in the divine life.
One of the most important words to describe God in the Old Testament is chesed (tender mercy). The New Testament version of this is found in the First Letter of John: God is agape (love). Everything else we say about God should be seen as an aspect of this chesed and this agape. Chesed is compassion; agape is willing the good of the other. Therefore, if you want to be happy, desire to be like God. Do it and you’ll be happy.

IHM Troop 2 is celebrating its 84th Anniversary at the 9:00AM Family Mass on February 5th! Scout Sunday is the traditional day to recognize the contributions of young people and adult leaders to Scouting and the community.
Boys and parents in the 5th through 11th grade who are interested in finding out more about Troop 2 are invited to visit us after the 9:00AM Mass in the lower church during our annual Communion Breakfast and Court of Honor. The Retreat Chaplain will be Fr. Justin Cinnante, Chaplain of Iona Prep High School (and former Chaplain of Archbishop Stepinac High School).
The Retreat will begin with dinner on Friday evening at 6:00PM at the Don Bosco Retreat Center and conclude Sunday at 12noon. The cost of the retreat is $250 and includes two nights of single occupancy rooms and all meals. Registration can be confirmed by mailing a $30 deposit (check to I.H.M.
