My dear friends,
Blessed Sunday of the Word of God! Aware that the proper place for all Scripture is to be proclaimed in the Liturgy and conscious that all of our prayers at Mass, all the other Sacraments and official prayers of the Church are imbued with the Word of God explicitly or implicitly, may we take this Sunday as an opportunity to experice the divine and human power of God’s Word. What is Jesus speaking to our hearts and souls, and to us as a Church community? His call to come and to follow him is not a distant echo, but rather, with the power of the Word of God, something that is meant to touch our hearts and minds each and every week and day. A good question to ask ourselves is, do I nourish my soul sufficiently with the Sacred Scriptures? A good way to delve more deeply into them is by looking at the daily Mass readings, or the Sunday readings, or perhaps, starting with a paragraph or a chapter of one of the Godpels each day.
We are in the midst of an annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity that concludes on January 25, which is the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul. We profess at Mass each Sunday that we believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. It is incumbent upon all followers of Jesus to pray asking the Lord to bring us together in one flock, so that our communion in Christ may be the witness that He seeks us to give and His desire that we “may be one” as Jesus expressed at the Last Supper.
This weekend we also pray for the Legal Protection of the Unborn (observed Monday this year). Here, in our State of New York, we ask for wisdom, courage and guidance, so that we may address the needs of women and families in crisis pregnancies and also for a bold embrace of the dignity and person of all unborn human life by welcoming of that life into the world.
Looking at your generosity last week in the weekly collections, I see I should go away more frequently!
Allow me to say a few words at each Mass about the 2023 Annual Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal, that has already begun.

Day of Prayer for the
Legal Protection of Unborn Children
From the instant of his or her conception, God loves each human life. This life must be respected and protected, and we Catholics have affirmed the moral evil of abortion since the very first century (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2271).
Abortion ends the life of a child, offends God, and wounds every woman and man involved. There have been over 60,000,000 abortions in the United States since 1973 codified its national law with Roe v. Wade.
Even with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, there is still much to be done to ensure the complete, legal protection of unborn children and to heal the wounds caused by abortion.
Today we are called to offer prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life for every man and woman from the moment of their existence.
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
"Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.(Luke 1:41-42)

Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus begins his public ministry and calls his first disciples.
When Jesus emerged publicly and began preaching the kingdom of God, he was taken to mean something very specific—namely, that the tribes of Israel, scattered by sin, were being gathered. The Israelite hope was that, in the Messianic era, Israel would become a godly nation gathered around the common worship of the true God at the temple on Mount Zion, and that this united Israel would become, in turn, a beacon to the other nations of the world. Jesus’ entire preaching and ministry should be read under this rubric of the great gathering.
Jesus gathered around himself a band of Apostles whom he shaped according to his own mind and heart and whom he subsequently sent on mission. Priests down through the centuries—from Augustine and Aquinas, to Francis Xavier and John Henry Newman, to John Paul II—are the descendants of those first friends and apprentices of the Lord.
They have been needed in every age, and they are needed today, for the kingdom of heaven must be proclaimed, the poor must be served, God must be worshiped, and the sacraments must be administered.

The Retreat Chaplain will be Fr. Justin Cinnante, Chaplain of Iona Prep High School (and former Chaplain of Archbishop Stepinac High School).
The Retreat will begin with dinner on Friday evening at 6:00PM at the Don Bosco Retreat Center and conclude Sunday at 12noon. The cost of the retreat is $250 and includes two nights of single occupancy rooms and all meals. Registration can be confirmed by mailing a $30 deposit (check to I.H.M.
