My dear friends,
A blessed holiday weekend of Martin Luther King, Jr. Our Christian vision of the human person is a beautiful antidote to any form of racism. We profess, and we believe that every person is created in the image and likeness of God and we also hold that every baptize person becomes a beloved son or daughter of our Heavenly Father through the grace of Jesus Christ. Our destiny is heaven and the communion of the Church that we seek to live here on earth in faith, hope and charity, is a preparation for the fullness of that communion, God willing one day, in heaven with the Holy Trinity.
As I mentioned last week, I am away with family in western New York during these days and will be back at the end of the week. We welcome back Fr. Jeevankumar who is helping us out while I’m away and then when Father Thumma takes some weeks to visit his family.
You will see below information about the annual March for Life in Washington, DC. We certainly give thanks to God that Roe v. Wade is no longer, and we ask God‘s mercy and healing upon all who have been caught up in the evil of abortion that is portrayed as a ‘right’ and a ‘good’ even today, that the Lord may restore people in his love, especially through the gift of Sacramental Confession. We also commit ourselves to the full legal protection of all unborn human life and will pray for that on Monday, January 23rd at all Masses in the USA.
While we won’t have our usual Monday of full day, Adoration, due to the holiday, we are in need of someone to commit to the 3:00PM slot for adoration every Monday. Please sign up online or contact the rectory.
As you know, our parish school is celebrating 95 years this year! To commemorate it, our IHM Development Committee is hosting a special Gala. We are honoring two pillars of our parish for their commitment to our school and to the life of our local church: JoAnn Murphy, posthumously, and Theresa Nicholson. please consider joining us for the Vigil Mass at 5:00PM and then for the 6:30PM reception and dinner down at Mulino’s at Lake Isle. There are also opportunities for journal ads. All proceeds of this wonderful parish community gathering will go towards supporting our parish school.
Each year the Church joins with fellow Christians to pray for unity in Jesus Christ. This year from January 18th until the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul on January 25th we will pray in a specific way for Christian unity.
Next Sunday, January 21st and 22nd, will be a Sunday where the Church focuses on the Word of God, that is proclaimed every day at daily Mass. It is a beautiful moment that Pope Francis added to the yearly liturgical cycle.
As we change gears from the Christmas season to the usual rhythm of our Liturgies, that we call Ordinary time because it is the usual order of things, you may wish to consider joining our Bible discussion group on Tuesdays at 7:00PM that is focusing on Saint Matthew’s Gospel, the focus of most of this year’s Sunday readings. Or you may wish to prayerfully read through Matthew’s Gospel to come to know Jesus better through the eyes of this wonderful Apostle and Saint.

Friends, in our Gospel today, John the Baptist gives witness to the role of the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ baptism.
Baptism is the moment when the Holy Spirit draws us out of this fallen world and into a new world. And with this in mind, we can understand the relationship between Baptism and the other sacraments. Baptism is birth in the spiritual order, the beginning of a properly spiritual life. The other sacraments represent specifications of that life.
For instance, a living thing needs to be nourished. This is the role that the Eucharist plays. But do you see why only baptized people can receive the Eucharist? If you’re not alive, there is no point in feeding you.

Living the Faith in Turbulent Times

All Catholic men are welcome. Spend a weekend in a time of restful retreat, quiet prayer, reflection, talks and God's grace. Time to recharge your spiritual batteries! The retreat will also feature personal testimonies by husbands and fathers.
The Retreat will begin with dinner on Friday evening at 6:00PM at the Don Bosco Retreat Center and conclude Sunday at 12noon. The cost of the retreat is $250 and includes two nights of single occupancy rooms and all meals. As many of us watched the funeral Mass and other ceremonies of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI – mostly from our homes – we shared the sorrow of his passing while celebrating his many gifts and years of service to the Church. Through his writings, first introduced to me as a student at St. Joseph’s Seminary in the 1970s, we can still have access to the man he was and the profound impact he had on our faith. The stories and recollections of his intellect and humility have been inspiring to hear.
With the events of the week in mind, I invite you to review videos and articles on Pope Benedict’s death and burial which have been curated and developed in the new archdiocesan news outlet, The Good NewsroomTM. You may visit the website homepage or visit the section we have created on Pope Benedict here. I hope you will enjoy all the material, especially the videos from His Eminence, Cardinal Dolan.

What is the March for Life in Washington D.C.?
The March for Life in Washington D.C. began as a grassroots response of pro-lifers nationwide to Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion throughout the 9 months of a woman’s pregnancy. This year, thanks to the Dobbs vs Jackson decision, the 50th March for Life takes place in a post-Roe world. But the March for Life is more important than ever as we strive towards a true culture of life in our nation! Inspired by the Holy Spirit’s gift of Reverence, Catholics and all people of good will come together at our Nation’s Capital to pray and publicly intercede on behalf of the unborn, their parents, families, our communities, our nation and its leaders – that this prayerful presence may open hearts, minds, souls to the fullness of the Gospel of Life in our lives and laws.

Life Fest is a Mass and Rally hosted by the Sisters of Life on the morning of the March for Life Jan 20th 7:30am-10:30 am at the Entertainment and Sports Center in Washington, D.C. For any who have sensitivities to Gluten, know that Low Gluten hosts (containing less than 0.002% gluten, <20ppm, fully in accord with Church Canon Law) are available for receiving our Lord in Holy Communion. For those unable to have any gluten, we are happy to offer Holy Communion from a separate Chalice. Please speak with a priest before Mass.

The format includes: 20 minutes of Centering Prayer (a silent prayer form in the Christian contemplative tradition in which we seek to open our minds and hearts to the Divine Life within), Lectio Divina (a prayerful reading of Scripture) and a brief discussion. - Boys 11 to 17 are invited to Join Immaculate Heart of Mary Boy Scout Troop 2 Scarsdale. Visit Boy Scout Troop 2 in the IHM lower Church (201 Boulevard, Scarsdale) on Thursday evenings at 7:30PM. Do you want to canoe, camp, go white water rafting, rock climb, repel . . . all while using life skills like first aid and CPR? Then come try us out!
