A blessed Epiphany to you! While the 12th day of Christmas lands on January 6th, we move this very important day to the nearby Sunday. Jesus Christ is the Light not only for Israel, but of the whole world as the coming of the Magi indicate. Jesus is Emmanuel - God With Us (frankincense for divinity), Jesus is King (gold) and He is our Savior (myrrh for burial after the sacrifice of the Cross). Speaking of Light - IHM has been working on that. Our PPM Facilities Maintenance team has been working with our electrical vendor to address our aging lighting system. A number of lights were good-to-go for Christmas, but then burned out thereafter. They are seeking to address better lighting in the chapel, on the transepts of the church and in the choir area and rear pews.
This may become part of a more comprehensive lighting project...
As part of the Spiritual Works of Mercy, let us take these 9 days of official mourning as a Church for the late Holy Father Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI to offer prayers for his repose with an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be each day.
If you have not had an opportunity to view his Funeral Mass, may I suggest this one from EWTN by clicking here. I have very high regard for two of the commentators, whom I know personally from our days at the seminary in Rome. What they have to share comes from the depth of their faith and priestly lives, and a wealth of their experience and knowledge. Father Roger Landry, a priest of the Diocese of Fall River (Massachusetts), is presently the Catholic Chaplain at Columbia University in Manhattan. He was two years ahead of our class. Father Raymond de Souza, a priest and journalist from Canada, was a year behind our class.
Thank you to all who made a donation to our beautiful Christmas Flowers. Know that this collection goes completely to our Saint Veronica Guild, who from these funds not only provide flowers for the sanctuary at Christmas and Eastertime, but year-round. Such beautiful plants and flowers not only capture the hearts of those who come to Mass or for a visit to the Blessed Sacrament, but also serve as a wonderful gift to the Lord in whose presence they remain. This generosity to assist with the worship of God and the beauty of His Sanctuary is joined so powerfully in our parish to the love of our neighbor and the support of their needs through HOPE Soup Kitchen, the Midnight Run, Second Collections such as to the Prison Ministry - Thrive for Life, the Little Sisters of the Poor, the Giving Tree, Cornerstone, the Baby Shower and other worthy collections!
A core of the Saint Veronica Guild members generously tend the beautiful flowers and plants almost every day Monday through Saturday after the 9:00am Mass (8:30am Saturdays).
Just as Mary in the Gospels lavishly anointed Jesus' feet before His Passion and the Lord received this gracious act (cf. John 12:1-11), may we lavishly give to Jesus in our worship of His Real Presence and lavishly give to Him in the poor and needy.

We welcome back to IHM for a month plus of assistance, Father Jeevan, who assisted us for five months last year, and has completed his service in Staten Island. Before he departs the USA, his presence will allow me to visit family gathering in western New York for 10 days over the MLK holiday weekend and then allow Father Thumma to make his usual annual visit to family and friends back in India when the weather is more moderate.
The Liturgical Christmas Season goes to the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus by Saint John, this year, on Monday, January 9th. Perhaps consider keeping your Nativity scenes up in your homes and the outside Christmas lights up until February 2nd, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple - Candlemas Day!
We will record all Christmas donations received at IHM by Sunday, January 8th and present the Christmas total to the parish the following week. Such donations will be noted on the 2022 tax letters sent to parishioners. Donations received after this Sunday will be noted for 2023.

A Jesuit, a Dominican, and a Franciscan were walking along an old road, debating the greatness of their orders. Suddenly, an apparition of the Holy Family appeared in front of them, with Jesus in a manger and Mary and Joseph praying over him. The Franciscan fell on his face, overcome with awe at the sight of God born in such poverty. The Dominican fell to his knees, adoring the beautiful reflection of the Trinity in the Holy Family. The Jesuit walked up to Joseph, put his arm around his shoulder, and said, “So, have you thought about where to send the boy to school?”

Sunday, January 8, 2023 | Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord | Matthew 2:1-12
Friends, the story of the Magi told in today’s Gospel is a summary of the principal dynamics of the spiritual life. Watching the night sky with scrupulous attention for signs of God’s purpose, the Magi evoke the importance of alertness in the spiritual order. We must keep our eyes open to see what God is up to.
Once they saw the star, they moved, despite the length of the journey. Sometimes people know what God wants them to do but they don’t act, either out of fear, laziness, or the influence of bad habits. The Magi teach us to move.
When they spoke to Herod of the birth of a new King, he tried to use them to destroy the baby. When you walk the path that God has laid out for you, expect opposition.
The wise men came to Bethlehem and gave the child their precious gifts. When you come to Christ, break open the very best of yourself and make it a gift for him.
Finally, they returned to their home country by another route. As Fulton Sheen commented so magnificently: of course they did; for no one comes to Christ and goes back the same way he came!

Why Was Jesus Baptized?
January 9th, the Baptism of the Lord
This day we celebrate the baptism of Jesus, an event that formally began the public ministry of Jesus and ends the Christmas season for us today. But it's a strange event.
Why would the sinless, almighty God of the universe receive baptism alongside fallen men and women?
St. Maximus of Turin affirmed, "Christ is baptized, not to be made holy by the water, but to make the water holy." Jesus allows himself to stand shoulder-to-shoulder and numbered among us fellow sinners, assuming his role as the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world and descend into death for our salvation.
We must all be humble enough to enter into the mystery and go down into the waters of our Baptismal call to be reborn in Christ who desires for us life, and life in abundance!Consider watching and sharing this video of Bishop Barron's on the importance of Baptism from his series The Creed:

Today we take up the collection for the Catholic University of America & Catholic Communications Campaign (CCC). Since 1987, The Catholic University of America has been educating students from all fifty states in philosophy, theology, and the arts and sciences. It is a splendid tribute to the commitment of the Catholic faithful to the best in academic training and religious formation for our young people.
The Catholic Communications Campaign serves all of the Catholic archdiocese and dioceses of our nation by producing outstanding spiritual programs for radio and television alike. One half of your gift will sustain the campaign and the other half will assist us here in the Archdiocese of New York in our Communications Office. Your generous support of these two most worthy causes will be deeply appreciated.

Living the Faith in Turbulent Times

All Catholic men are welcome. Spend a weekend in a time of restful retreat, quiet prayer, reflection, talks and God's grace. Time to recharge your spiritual batteries! The retreat will also feature personal testimonies by husbands and fathers.
The Retreat will begin with dinner on Friday evening at 6:00PM at the Don Bosco Retreat Center and conclude Sunday at 12noon. The cost of the retreat is $250 and includes two nights of single occupancy rooms and all meals. Registration can be confirmed by mailing a $30 deposit (check to IHM Holy Name Society) or using Venmo ("@Damian-Wach") by February 25th to Damian Wach, 11 Stoneleigh Road, Scarsdale, NY 10583.
