My dear friends,
A blessed and Happy New Year 2023! (Please note that there will NOT be a 7:30am Sunday Mass tomorrow, New Year's Day.)
As society celebrates a new calendar year, the Church concludes the Octave of Christmas by honoring and celebrating Blessed Mary as the Mother of God! Though she herself is not divine, by giving birth to the Divine Person of the Son of God, who took on our human nature to dwell with us, she truly is the Mother of God and will forever enjoy this beautiful relationship with her Son, Jesus.
It was wonderful celebrating Christmas with all of you! A big thank you to Dr. Laurie Adamo, our Director of Music and Organist, for bringing together and directing our choir, a number of soloists including our very own Larry Harris and a brass ensemble! Thank you to our dedicated women of the Parish's Saint Veronica's Guild who, with some help from our Servers, set up the sanctuary with the Creche and the dazzling Poinsettia plants! Our gratitude to our Ushers, Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers, Servers and Sacristan for all you did to make the Solemnity special! Our worship of God and our experience of the Holy Mass should be beautiful and relate to various senses and dimensions of our being. Thank all of you for your support and presence!
For the observed holiday on Monday, January 2nd, we will only have a 9:00am daily Mass followed by a Eucharistic Holy Hour with Confessions (9:30-10:30am). The regular Adoration schedule will return on Tuesday, January 3rd. (Please see below for details - do sign up for an hour!)
Speaking of the 3rd...This week on Tuesday, Fr. Thumma celebrates his birthday! Please join me in wishing him a wonderful celebration in gratitude to Almighty God for the blessing that he is at IHM!
IHM School returns on Tuesday and our Religious Education Program comes back in session on Wednesday. May you enjoy these last couple of days of Christmas break!
Please give consideration to supporting our IHM Development Gala on February 25th. There is also a Holy Name Society Men's Weekend Retreat March 10th - 12th at the Marian Shrine in Haverstraw (Rockland County). Details below for both!
The Solemnity of the Epiphany, celebrated with much devotion by Eastern Christians, is traditionally celebrated on the 6th of January. For Latin Rite Roman Catholics in the United States, our Bishops move the observance to the Sunday following January 1st. The Liturgical Christmas Season extends this year to Monday, January 9th, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. But there is also the tradition to go to February 2nd - the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple (perhaps leave the Nativity out until then!).
Thank you, once again, for your devoted presence during Christmas and your financial support of our parish! The Christmas collection will be kept open until January 8th. Tax letters for donations to IHM will be generated later this month.
A blessed Sunday, Solemnity of Mary and New Year!
