My dear friends,
When our Archbishop, Cardinal Dolan, writes letters, under the date is usually indicated the saint’s feastday, but also included is the special dedication of that month (e.g. October for the Holy Rosary and June to the Sacred Heart of Jesus). I did not realize until recently that August has traditionally been dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary! Our Spiritual Mother's feast day used to be on August 22nd, before Vatican Council II, concluding the Octave of the Assumption of the Blessed Mother from August 15th. Today the 22nd is the Memorial of Blessed Mary’s Queenship or Coronation in Heaven. For more information about our patronal month and some devotions to consider, please click here.
While there are ten Holy Days of Obligation (Solemnities requiring Mass participation) on the universal Church calendar, each Conference (basically country) of Catholic Bishops is able to decide with the approval of the Apostolic See (the Vatican) if any should be transferred to Sunday (for us, the Epiphany and Corpus Christi) or if certain ones should not be obligatory for the faithful under their care (for us Saint Joseph and Saints Peter and Paul).
Since the Assumption falls on a Monday in 2022, the obligation to attend Mass is dispensed for this year. Click here for more information.

Friends, the statement of Jesus that we have in the Gospel for today is frightening: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” He’s throwing fire down, much like the God who destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.
Okay, so how do we make sense of all this? I thought the angels on Christmas morning said that he had come as the Prince of Peace? Jesus is the Incarnation of the God who is nothing but love, but this enfleshment takes place in the midst of a fallen, sinful world. Therefore, it will appear as something threatening, strange, off-putting.
The world, on the biblical reading, is a dysfunctional family. When Jesus comes, he necessarily comes as a breaker of the peace, as a threat to the dysfunctional family. Now we can begin to understand that strange language about setting three against two and two against three.
This is why Jesus wants to cast a consuming fire on the earth. He wants to burn away all that is opposed to God’s desire for us. He has to clear the ground before something new can be built. Is this utterly painful? Yes!

Through the Mission Co-Op of the Propagation of Faith Office of the Archdiocese of New York on this weekend (August 13 & 14), Fr. Dennis Koltz will speak at all Masses at IHM about the work of the PIME Missionaries. Founded in Italy in 1850, PIME Missionaries are priests and brothers who dedicate themselves as lifelong messengers of the Gospel to those who have not yet heard the Word of God. They live and work alongside the poorest among us in 19 countries, shedding light on the silent struggles of our brothers and sisters in the missions and connecting them to those with a spirit to help.
Fr. Dennis Koltz was ordained a PIME Missionary priest in June, 1990. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the Vocation Director in the United States Region of PIME from 1990 – 1992. In 1992 he received his mission assigned to Brazil, where he ministered to the people of the Amazon in the Diocese of Macapa, Brazil, until 2021. Fr. Dennis returned to the U.S. in October of 2021.

St. Maximilian Kolbe, pray for us! (August 14th)
St. Maximilian Kolbe was a Franciscan friar, a writer, a missionary, and a martyr at the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Born in Poland, the young boy Raymond experienced a vision of Mary offering the two crowns of purity and martyrdom; Raymond asked for both. Later having taken the religious name 'Maximilian,' he traveled to Japan for ministry, before returning to Poland to use the new printing presses to spread the Gospel.
In 1941, he was arrested by the Nazi Gestapo and given prisoner number #16670. He would go on to take the place of a fellow inmate doomed to die by starvation. He died by lethal injection on the eve of the Assumption of Mary, his life marked beginning and end by a devotion to Jesus through Mary.
St. Pope John Paul II declared Maximilian a saint in 1982.

The Solemnity of the Assumption, celebrated each year on August 15th, commemorates the event at the end of the Blessed Mary's life on earth, when God assumed her both soul and body into heaven, not allowing the corruption of the grave to touch her. As the image of the Church, the special blessing she received at her Assumption gives us the preview of our own bodily resurrection in the Lord at the end of time.

Mary was assumed, body and soul, into heaven.
What does this mean? This doesn't mean that Mary floated "up, up and away" into the clouds, but rather that she fully entered into that final harmony and union with God (body and soul), seeing God face-to-face, that goal to which we are all called.

Mary is the "model disciple," as St. Augustine noted, and, having been preserved from sin, she was preserved from corruption. Now Mary intercedes for us and cheers us on that we too might participate in this life-giving relationship with Jesus Christ.

IHM Troop 2 Scarsdale earns Boy Scout of America Curtis S. Read Waubeeka Award
Immaculate Heart of Mary Troop 2 Scarsdale Scouts and adult leaders had a successful week at Boy Scout Curtis S. Read Camp in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. They enjoyed outdoor activities and earned merits badges in archery, environmental science, mammal study, metal working, plumbing, swimming, and wilderness survival to name a few. The Scouts earned the Camp Waubeeka Award for their cheerful completion of an environmental service project while exhibiting Scout spirit and adhering to the Scout Oath and Law.
Our Food Pantry is in need of the following nutritious foods: canned fruits, dried fruits, fruit cocktail, peanut butter, canned meals, such as spaghetti and meatballs, noodles, rice, dry/hot cereals, jelly, crackers, dry milk packets, juice boxes, cookies, Jell-O, puddings macaroni & cheese and canned tuna.
Sundry Items – Paper toweling, toilet tissue, shampoo, toothpaste, soap.
To ensure food safety, we cannot use: unlabeled cans, glass containers, perishable foods or expired items.

Just as your child begins their educational journey in Kindergarten, IHM invites you to begin their journey in the faith at the same time. Immaculate Heart of Mary Religious Education offers classes to support your home faith learning starting in Kindergarten and continuing through eighth grade.
Our Kindergarten teachers provide a loving and nurturing classroom setting. The Kindergarten curriculum focuses on the basic beliefs of our religion: an introduction to God, the Church, Jesus, and what it means to be a part of God’s family. They will also learn prayers and respect for life and each other.

The 45th COLUMBUS DAY MASS will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Monday, October 10th at 9:30AM and reflects the millions of men, women and children who came to America in pursuit of freedom and opportunity, and the faith that helped them endure hardship and adversity. Admission is free, but tickets are required to enter the cathedral until 9:15 at which point it becomes general admission. Please email or call the Rectory if you would like to request tickets. The parade celebrating Italian American heritage will begin at 11:30AM.
