My dear friends,
A blessed Feast of the Transfiguration today (Saturday) - a pivotal moment for the Apostles Peter, James and John to behold Jesus’ radiant divinity before the scandal of the Cross. For us, it is the Fourth Mystery of Light of the Holy Rosary to meditate on Jesus’ divinity each Thursday. We also recall on this day in 1945 the detonation of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima as we pray for peace in our world today and for deliverance from the horrors of nuclear war now and in the future.
In the 9th and 10th chapters of Luke’s Gospel Jesus sends His 12 Apostles and 72 disciples on mission. Shortly thereafter we hear them share with Jesus their experience of proclaiming the Good News. In the Acts of the Apostles 14:26-28, after their First Mission to evangelize and proclaim Jesus Christ to their fellow Jewish brothers and sisters, as well as to the Gentiles, Paul and Barnabas returned to the local Church in Antioch that sent them and they shared with them God’s work of grace and faith from their mission.
This wonderful tradition from Jesus and the Apostles continues alive in the Church to this very day. On August 13th and 14th, IHM will welcome a Mission appeal from a PIME Missionary, Fr. Dennis Koltz, who will preach at all the Sunday (Vigil, too!) Masses to share what the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME) is doing to proclaim our faith in Jesus Christ in the world and how we can assist PIME through our prayers and financial support. Let us take advantage of this yearly opportunity that the Church knows we need.
I begin this next section by renewing Jesus’ call for mercy, love and forgiveness for those who have ever been caught up in the sin of abortion. He is waiting with open arms in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Jesus wants to heal and save broken humanity.
Please join me in prayer for a classmate of mine, Fr. Fidelis Moscinski, CFR (Franciscan Community of the Friars of the Renewal), and two of his fellow pro-life witnesses, who were each recently sentenced to 90-days in jail for their efforts to dissuade women from having abortions in White Plains. It is part of a Red Rose Rescue that has been done at various other abortion clinics.
From those who were in the courtroom, here are approximations of Fr. Fidelis’ remarks to the court. (Reading them I could not help but think of some of the accounts of early Christian martyrs being sentenced by the authorities of the Roman Empire):
‘Father Fidelis said in his closing statement - “Isaiah said woe to those who call good evil
and evil good. Woe to those who call abortion a right.
(Addressed to the judge) You disallowed the justification defense and that injustice was compounded by the jury and also by the sentencing you have given, I plead the blood of Jesus on this court room.”
The judge replied - “You quoted judgement day in your case and today is your judgement day”’

I give this story publicity here at IHM because I deeply believe as your Pastor that at the end of our lives Jesus will ask us what we have done for the least among us - specifically for unborn children and their mothers and families in crisis particularly here in New York that has such permissive abortion laws. The example of my classmate wakes me up as to the evil that we drive by and what I am or am not doing in response to what should not be in a culture of life and love (it is so easy to just live our lives as if all is fine…).
While we do much at IHM for mothers and babies with the Baby Bottle Drives, Baby Shower donations, the October Life Chain and some prayerful witnesses outside of White Plains abortion clinics, it is time to renew our efforts in our community and in New York State - to expand our parish Pro-Life Committee (please let me know who is interested), to prayerfully witness and with truth and charity, to see where there may be unmet needs, and to ensure our voices are heard by our political representatives.

Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus urges us to be ready for his Second Coming. It reminds me of John the Baptist preparing us: “Make straight the way of the Lord.” He is saying that his job is to prepare for the mighty coming of the Lord. A change is coming, a revolution is on the way, a disaster (the destruction of the old) is about to happen. Prepare the way of the Lord.
And what is the manner of preparation? It is a baptism of repentance. Baptism—an immersion in water—reminded first-century Jews of the Exodus, passing through the Red Sea, leaving the ways of slavery behind.
And repentance (metanoia)—going beyond the mind that you have. How our minds are conditioned by the fallen world! How our expectations are shaped, stunted by what has gone before. The Transfiguration - August 6th
Radiating his glory from the top of Mt. Tabor, Jesus revealed to his closest friends that he was not merely a healer or prophet, but the Son of God Himself. Christ's skin and clothes illuminated, as the prophet Daniel had foretold: "The Ancient One took his throne. His clothing was bright as snow...One like a Son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven" (Daniel 7).
Today's feast celebrates this great event in the life of Christ. We are all called to witness this radiant love God has for his people and return "down the mountain" to share this good news! Jesus is Lord!
May we radiate Your love, O Lord!

Through the Mission Co-Op of the Propagation of Faith Office of the Archdiocese of New York on the weekend of August 13 & 14, Fr. Dennis Koltz will speak at all Masses at IHM about the work of the PIME Missionaries. Founded in Italy in 1850, PIME Missionaries are priests and brothers who dedicate themselves as lifelong messengers of the Gospel to those who have not yet heard the Word of God. They live and work alongside the poorest among us in 19 countries, shedding light on the silent struggles of our brothers and sisters in the missions and connecting them to those with a spirit to help.
Fr. Dennis Koltz was ordained a PIME Missionary priest in June, 1990. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the Vocation Director in the United States Region of PIME from 1990 – 1992. In 1992 he received his mission assigned to Brazil, where he ministered to the people of the Amazon in the Diocese of Macapa, Brazil, until 2021. Fr. Dennis returned to the U.S. in October of 2021.

Did you know that IHM Religious Education Program begins in Kindergarten?
Just as your child begins their educational journey in Kindergarten, IHM invites you to begin their journey in the faith at the same time. Immaculate Heart of Mary Religious Education offers classes to support your home faith learning starting in Kindergarten and continuing through eighth grade.
Our Kindergarten teachers provide a loving and nurturing classroom setting. The Kindergarten curriculum focuses on the basic beliefs of our religion: an introduction to God, the Church, Jesus, and what it means to be a part of God’s family. They will also learn prayers and respect for life and each other.

The 45th COLUMBUS DAY MASS will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Monday, October 10th at 9:30AM and reflects the millions of men, women and children who came to America in pursuit of freedom and opportunity, and the faith that helped them endure hardship and adversity. Admission is free, but tickets are required to enter the cathedral until 9:15 at which point it becomes general admission. Please email or call the Rectory if you would like to request tickets. The parade celebrating Italian American heritage will begin at 11:30AM.
