My dear friends,
This weekend I will be on my required annual retreat of five full days. It will be a private retreat at the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington on Long Island (all New York priests had a retreat there last year). Please pray for me; I will certainly be praying for you and that I may be a better priest and Pastor to serve you after the Heart of Jesus Christ the Good Shepherd.
As Mrs. Laura Covais, our Coordinator of Religious Education, and I prepare for this upcoming school-year, know that last year 2021-22 was very much a transitional year from the "all-virtual" classes of the pandemic to getting our program back to "in-person". We cannot just go back to the way things were pre-Covid (e.g. most classrooms are now equipped with smart boards and the Catechists are expected to utilize such technology for class presentation). The fact, however, that a third of our 660+ student body was not "in-person" on a regular basis concerned me as I reviewed the year and as plans were made to move forward.
The assistance that the parish gives to parents in raising children in our Catholic faith is meant to take place in the context of prayer at home, Sunday Mass and recourse to the Sacrament of Confession, as well as growth in charity and service from the dinner table to family, friends and the community. Our knowledge and love of Jesus develops in a community, the Church, and specifically the family and the parish.
These are important considerations as Mrs. Covais and I continue to develop our IHM Religious Education Program to be the best quality it can be for the good of the children, while meeting the concrete needs of you, the parents. To ensure that, Mrs. Covais and I have begun to speak about forming a Religious Education Board for counsel, building community among Religious Education families and for feedback. As many of you are aware, this concept is hardly new, but comes from our rich IHM parish tradition! (Prayers for the repose of Sister Mary Adele Henze, SC, a former Director of IHM School of Religion, whose funeral was held this past week.)
For full disclosure, some parents have requested an exception to our in-person religious education offering for 2022-23 school year. It was always my intention happily to receive and consider such requests. The right and responsibility, stated at Baptism, of Mom and Dad being the first teachers of their children in the Faith is sacred and to be respected. Know that I will have some things to pray about on retreat asking for guidance, then speaking with Mrs. Covais before a final decision is made on some pending requests.
As you may have heard, the lower church got flooded again in the heavy rainstorm this past Monday. Fr. Thumma along with Steve, our new Superintendent for Maintenance, headed up a crew of very generous parishioners to address the flooding: Fr. Jeevan, John and Camille, Theresa and Jeff, Laura, Barbara and Donna. They came for Monday evening prayers and kindly helped with the clean up. Thank you very much for your hard work and wet vacs!
Allow me to express my gratitude to the Eastchester Fire Commissioners, particularly Commissioner Thomas Roche, for the honor to serve as one of five Chaplains. To Chief Brian Tween, who presented the badge at the July 14th Commissions Meeting, and to his Eastchester Firefighters - know of my prayers and willingness to serve as needed.
To produce this bulletin each week, Joanne Tormey, our parish secretary, sends updates and information to Joe Macli, who puts together the electronic bulletin and lays it out beautifully with links and interactive material. Each Saturday morning it is sent to almost 2,000 individuals or households. Of that number 60% open their weekly electronic bulletin. Recently, we brought on board Emily Theisen to assist with laying out a printed bulletin for those who are not able to benefit from the electronic one. Julie Casino, our Saturday receptionist, sees to the printing of the finished product in time for the Saturday Vigil Mass. Rita McCabe, our technology person who does a LOT behind the scenes, also has a hand in making sure that the bulletin comes together smoothly each week. This new printed bulletin is still in development, so we welcome feedback. Please help us get it into the hands and homes of sick or homebound family members, friends or neighbors. Would you kindly inform the rectory of those, to whom we should mail a copy each week?
A blessed Sunday to you - may you stay hydrated and cool!
