Lent is our journey toward the future glory of Risen Life with Christ, but first we too must endure the trials of life and seek to be ever faithful to the life Christ calls us to live. May Lent be a time when we “listen to Him”

I just wanted to offer a word of gratitude to you for allowing me to be a part of your lives and your journey of faith over the past 10 years.
It has been my honor and privilege to have been your parish priest. And in the near future after the chaos of moving and settling in has abated, I look forward to returning to offer a Mass for you once more and hopefully to greet and thank you in person.

1. Prayerful Devotions in Lent:
- Sacrament of Reconciliation: Mondays 8:00-8:45pm, Saturdays after the 8:30am Mass and from 4:00-5:00pm, and by appointment
- Stations of the Cross: Fridays of Lent at 7:00pm
- Adoration: Monday – Friday 9:30am-1:00pm in the Marian Chapel. Monday evenings from 8:00pm-9:00pm church. (FOR ASH WEDNESDAY 9:30am - 7:00pm - Marian Chapel)
- Holy Mass: Sundays: 7:30am, 9:00am, 10:30am & 12noon and Saturday Vigil at 5:30pm; Daily Monday-Friday 6:45am and 9:00am, Saturdays and holidays 8:30am.
- Easter Duty: The time for fulfilling Confession & Receiving Holy Communion extends from March 6 - First Sunday of Lent, to June 6 - Pentecost Sunday
2. Lenten Fast and Abstinence:
- During the Season of Lent, the Church urges all the Faithful to reflect a spirit in penance in their daily life through performing acts of fast and abstinence
- ABSTINENCE forbids the eating meat or poultry. Those who have reached the age of 14 or older are obliged to abstain on all Fridays of Lent, including Good Friday.
- FASTING binds all the faithful from the age of 18 until 59 (inclusive) to limit oneself to one full meal and avoid food between meals. Light sustenance may be taken on two other occasions during the day. ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY are days of Fast and Abstinence.
- All Fridays of the year are designated as days of penance during which we are encouraged to practice self-denial out of gratitude for the suffering and death Jesus accepted for us.
3. Almsgiving: Reach Out In Charity – The third part of the Lenten formula is almsgiving. It’s about more than throwing a few extra dollars in the collection plate; it’s about reaching out to others and helping them without question as a way of sharing the experience of God’s unconditional love.Some examples to consider may be:
- HOPE COMMUNITY SOUP KITCHEN We cook in our homes and deliver to the Church one to two times a month, it is then picked up and delivered to HOPE Community Services in New Rochelle (https://hopecommunityserevices.org/). If cooking is “not your thing” but you would like to help with shopping for other food items, that is also really needed. Thank you, Fr. Rafferty, on your 10 years of priestly ministry here at IHM! We look forward to welcoming you back for Mass and we will pray for you, especially in this time of transition.
This Sunday, please find at the entrances to the church complimentary The Word Among Us booklets for your Lenten edification, as well as extra Missalettes that you may take for yourselves or the homebound. Please feel free to help yourselves to the extra Christmas poinsettia plants on the floor of the Christ the King Altar and then after the 12noon Sunday Mass, all (and ONLY) the poinsettia plants also by the statues of the Saints.
Tuesday, March 1st, is Mardi Gras - the last day of Ordinary time before Lent. Cardinal Dolan will ordain two new Auxiliary Bishops for the Archdiocese on this day. Let us pray for Bishops Bonnici and Espaillat! You may wish to livestream the Ordination Mass (1:30pm procession, 2pm Mass). Know that all the priests and our seminarian are planning to be at St. Patrick's Cathedral for this special Liturgy.
For your Lenten journey Vincent Castaldi will offer a Learning to Pray through the way of St. Ignatius of Loyola presentation twice: at 9:45am (lower church) and 7:00pm in the school auditorium. I will be leading a men's morning of recollection next Saturday sponsored by the Holy Name Societies. There will also be a kickoff that same day for 40Days for Life. Stay tuned for other updates about Lenten Oratorios and a Bible Study!
With war in Europe, Pope Francis has declared Ash Wednesday a Day of Fasting and Prayer for Ukraine. To pray for this Peace, IHM will offer Adoration in the Marian Chapel after the 9:00am Mass until 7:00 in the evening on March 2nd. Please sign up for an hour of prayer outside the Marian Chapel. We will also offer this Monday's morning and evening Rosaries for Peace. Please join us.

"Every Tree is Known by its Fruit"
The thread that runs through our readings today is the fact that our speech reveals our souls.
Jesus asserts that "Every tree is known by its fruit" (Luke 6). We are good by our very creation as men and women in the image of God. But our lives are also decidedly marked by what we say or don't say, what we do or don't do, and if we bear life or tear it down.
It's easier to see the flaws in others and offer our criticism. It's much more difficult to look within and to examine the beam in our own eye and where we fall short of receiving (and thus radiating) the love of God.
Consider watching this video from Bishop Barron with these questions in mind:
- What does it mean (and why does it matter) that Jesus is the "divine Truth in person"?
- How does the example (the work) of Christ stand against our world's obsession with fame, power, pleasure, or wealth?
"A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love.”

Family Life: Prayer Service for
Divorced/Separated Individuals
The Family Life Office is sponsoring a Prayer Service for Divorced and Separated individuals from the archdiocese on Saturday, March 5th at St. Joseph's Seminary (201 Seminary Ave., Yonkers). Cardinal Dolan will preside.
Our program begins with morning prayer and a reflection by Cardinal Dolan. His Eminence will share his message of comfort, hope, healing and joy for those present.
Light refreshments will be available before and after the prayer service. Archdiocesan and Family Life staff will be available to answer questions and provide resources about issues and topics such as convalidations and annulments, along with information on the Family Life Office’s programs and ministries.
WOMEN'S LENTEN RETREAT

EASTCHESTER'S 16TH ANNUAL
ST. PATRICKS DAY PARADE
Eastchester's 16th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, presented by the Eastchester Irish-American Social Club, will take place on Sunday, March 13th at 3:00PM. It will go up Rte. 22 - ICS to Main St. to Lake Isle. There will be Bagpipers, Irish Dancers, Marching Bands, Scouts, Sports Teams & More! The Grand Marshal will be Tim McGrath.
Special Event: Revolutionary Westchester 250 Presents: Washington, Rochambeau and the Grand Reconnaissance
The Grand Reconnaissance was the joint French American military operation in Westchester County and the Bronx, in July 1781. It is an overlooked moment in the history of the American Revolution, but it was a pivotal moment for the fate of the young United States.

Dr. Iris de Rode, author and lecturer, earned her doctoral degree in France in 2019 and has done extensive research on the French participation in the American Revolution, based on unpublished French sources. During her lecture, she will share her findings on the Grand Reconnaissance, based on a report of one of its participants, the Major General Chastellux (1734-1788).

DAY OF VOCATIONS

You're invited to join us for St. Joseph's Day at St. Joseph's Seminary (201 Seminary Avenue, Yonkers)
St. Joseph Day is a free, day-long event at the seminary for young men. Meet Cardinal Dolan, enjoy great food, and meet the challenge of climbing the Lord's mountain. Wear sneakers and clothes for athletic activity (no shorts).
Young men ages 12 to 18 are invited! It will include prayer, talks, a tour, food trucks, and rock climbing.

- High School of Religion: HSOR will attend Ash Wednesday Mass, March 2nd at 7:30PM and sit as a group. Respecting the Lenten fast (for 18-59 year old people) and abstinence (age 14 and up), following Mass we will offer "garage pizza". The following week we will get back to a normal schedule, meeting on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-8:45PM. HSOR is "A night out in the middle of the week!" Some of our activities are: prayers and pizza, scavenger hunt, faith on film, basketball & more!
