This weekend I am looking forward to blessing couples celebrating various Wedding Anniversaries: 10, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 55, 60 and 60+ years! After Mass please join us at the outside Statute of the Blessed Mother for a little toast with congratulations and some pictures. Thank you to the Saint Veronica's Guild for organizing the apple cider bubbly and to Joanne Tormey for preparing all of the certificates.
Monday and Wednesday of this week our parish welcomes back in-person learning for our Religious Education Program! Diane Meade and Laura Covais, their staff and our parish catechists have been hard at work to make this happen safely. We will now start our 90 minutes sessions in the church for a quarter of an hour before sending the grades to their classes. This week I look forward to speaking with the parents after that time to discuss the vision of our catechetical program in your family life of faith.

This Wednesday at 7:30pm we also welcome back, building on a solid in-person year for much of last year, HSOR - our High School of Religion Program with Nancy Vericker, joined by Ray Mechmann and Elise Kuhn. It deepens a teen's Catholic Identity and cultivates a good relationship with Jesus and the Church - all over prayer and pizza!
IHM has been blessed with a number of Weddings this month and even during the summer. Some have been postponed due to the pandemic. It is a blessing to walk with these couples as they prepare for the Sacrament of Marriage. Please pray for them by name when their Banns of Marriage are published in the bulletin, that they may prepare well to receive such a beautiful grace. The Church passes through the family and society's fundamental cell is the family.
Next Sunday, October 3rd, do plan on joining IHM for the Life Chain on Post Road from 1-2pm. Bring your family and friends!
As you can see, Renew and Rebuild work is progressing on the outer church and rectory. The asbestos removal was completed on September 9th without incident. Outside wood is being tended to, stripped and repainted. Any broken protective glass of our beautiful stained glass windows is being replaced. Where the stone structure is leaking, it is being repointed. Slate is on order to replace sections of the roof where it is broken. The lower church windows are being custom made and should take about 3 months before they arrive. Until then, two temporary exhaust fans have been installed in the lower church to enable the school to utilize the space once again as a cafeteria.
Beginning Monday, the Carman Road side door of the church (near St. Anthony's statue with the handicap ramp) will be obstructed while the crane is in position to work on the North Rose Window. Kindly make other plans to enter church for the week.
We are almost there with our Cardinal's Appeal goal for 2021! I would ask 17 individuals or families of our parish, who have not yet given to the Stewardship Appeal this year, to consider making a donation of any amount so as to reach our participation goal. Thank you.
Please pray for those whom the Lord Jesus is calling to join the parish's Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA Process) this October. Do invite people to consider being baptized in the Church, entering into full Communion with the Catholic Church or completing their Sacraments of Initiation as Catholics.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION REOPEN!
At Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish we have been uniquely blessed to have Eucharistic Adoration available in our Marian Chapel day and night during the week. Although Adoration was suspended in March 2020, we have re-opened from 9:00AM until 1:00PM!
We are using an online signup process to rebuild our schedule of committed Adorers. If you were previously on the Adoration schedule, you will need to signup to renew your commitment. If you are returning or new to the Adoration schedule, we welcome you to join us in this opportunity to spend time with Jesus.

MASS SEATING & BAPTISMS
1. Striving to best accommodate all seating preferences at our Masses: the School side of the church has no seating restrictions on distance and masks are optional, most of the Carman Road side offers social distancing and we ask all to wear masks on that side of church, and the Adoration Chapel offers an environment for those who are uncomfortable being in the main body of the church with unmasked individuals, therefore social distance and required masks are in order. Thank you for your understanding.
2. We will continue to have Sunday Mass at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM and 12:00 noon. Starting September 12, 2021, until the Sunday before Memorial Day 2022, we plan on the Sunday Mass schedule being: 7:30 AM (no music), 9:00 AM (Family Mass), 10:30 AM (Adult Choir Mass) and 12:00 noon.
3. The Sacrament of Baptism for Infants and Toddlers is held on 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month at 1:30PM. Up to four families will be accommodated for each scheduled Baptism. Please contact the Rectory for availability and to set up an appointment.

Respect Life Sunday, on October 3rd, kicks off Respect Life Month, a time to pray for the protection of all human life. You can join one of the Life Chains, a peaceful and prayerful public witness for an end to abortion that offers a message of mercy and healing for those suffering as a result of abortion. Or you can participate in Rosary Coast to Coast, a movement to unite the nation in praying the Holy Rosary for healing of our country and a return to holiness. PUBLIC SQUARE ROSARY RALLY
You are invited to the 2021 PUBLIC SQUARE ROSARY RALLY on Saturday, October 16th at 12:00 noon. Will take place in the North Parking lot of IHM Church in Scarsdale by the Grotto of Our Lady. This year as we pray Our Lady’s Rosary and other prayers in her honor, we invoke her blessings on marriage and the family and on our country and the world. This Rally is one of 20,000 rosary rallies, organized by America Needs Fatima, that will take place all over the United States. What is a cardinal's role in the
Catholic Church?
Catholics and non-Catholics in the New York metropolitan area take pride in the fact that our archbishop, Timothy Dolan, is not simply an archbishop but also a cardinal of the Holy Roman Church. He is one of 222 members of the Sacred College of Cardinals. Their best-known duty – reserved to cardinals under the age of 80 – is to elect a new pope whenever a reigning pontiff dies or resigns. But that is far from their only responsibility.
According to the Code of Canon Law (Canon 349), “The Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church constitute a special College, whose prerogative it is to elect the Roman Pontiff.… The Cardinals are also available to the Roman Pontiff, either acting collegially, when they are summoned together to deal with questions of major importance, or acting individually, that is in the offices which they hold in assisting the Roman Pontiff especially in the daily care of the universal church.” Cardinals are thus the close collaborators of the pope, assisting him with their advice and counsel. Some of them work in the Roman Curia as the pope’s direct deputies.
The pope alone selects bishops and priests to become cardinals: “Those to be promoted Cardinals are men freely selected by the Roman Pontiff, who are at least in the order of priesthood and are truly outstanding in doctrine, virtue, piety and prudence in practical matters” (Canon 315). Technically, a priest must be consecrated as a bishop before becoming a cardinal, but the pope has the option to dispense with this requirement. When, for example, New York-based Jesuit Fr. Avery Dulles was named a cardinal by Pope John Paul II, he asked to forgo the obligation to be ordained a bishop, desiring simply to remain a priest. His request was granted.
According to Canon 356, “Cardinals have the obligation of cooperating closely with the Roman Pontiff.” Thus the heads of the various departments of the Holy See, known as dicasteries, are named cardinals, as are a select number of bishops throughout the world. Typically, the bishops of important and large cities are chosen to become cardinals. Since 1875, all but one of the archbishops of New York have been named cardinals. Pope John Paul II once told John Cardinal O’Connor that he was “the archbishop of the capital of the world”! Given New York’s prominence relative to other great cities, it is only fitting that our archbishop exercise the leadership role of a cardinal on the local, national and international scenes.
The most momentous duty of a cardinal is to vote for the new pope at the conclave held in the Sistine Chapel. This requires that he be attentive to the needs of the church at that particular moment in time, familiar with the qualities and gifts of his fellow cardinals (since one of them will almost certainly be selected pope), and open to the motions of the Holy Spirit for guidance in casting his vote. Before entering the conclave, voting and non-voting cardinals (those over 80 years old) meet to discuss the needs of the church. Once the conclave has begun, the voting cardinals pray, meet and vote until they have chosen the next pope. Canon law does not obligate the cardinals to pick one of their own to become pope, but centuries of historical precedent all but ensure that they will do so.
The cardinals of the Church have an awesome responsibility in electing the pope, and then advising and assisting him as he leads the flock of Christ and preaches the Gospel of salvation to the world. Let us keep them in our daily prayers, along with Christ’s vicar on earth, the pope.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline of Westchester - Volunteers Needed
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Volunteers are needed needed at St. Vincent’s Hospital Westchester, a division of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline of Westchester. Must be 18 years of age or older, high school diploma or GED, and able to commit to one 4-hour shift per week. Experience or a background in mental health preferred, but not required, and personal and/or lived experience is welcome. Need good listeners, empathetic and non-judgmental with good computer skills, be able to multi-task, and handle a fast-paced environment.
