This week concludes the six weeks of reflection the Church gives to Jesus’ Bread of Life Discourse in John’s Gospel, Chapter 6. Since last week was the Solemnity of the Assumption where the usual Readings were superseded, may I suggest reading an essential part of this Eucharistic Gospel that we all missed (John 6:52-59)? It will help us understand what we will hear from Jesus this weekend.
If you do not have a Bible App on your smartphone (if you use one), may I encourage you to download one that supports a Catholic Bible such as the New American Bible. Know that there are also Apps that would have the Mass Readings and other prayers - feel free to utilize them like a Missalette as some do already.
Consider becoming a Catechist or Assistant/Volunteer in our Religious Education Program! We are in need of a few Catechists for our Monday and Wednesday sessions. As experience shows, we tend to learn things better when we teach them. If the Holy Spirit is stirring your heart in this way, know that we can offer the support, encouragement and tools to bring this wonderful calling about in support of parents forming their children in our Catholic Faith. Thank you for your patience and understanding this past week. Work is progressing on the front offices, new carpeting should be installed tomorrow and we expect them to reopen Monday, August 23rd at 1:00pm. This week the Renew and Rebuild will add asbestos abatement work on Wednesday/Thursday. This delicate work will be done by hand. Thankfully, the material is not ‘friable’, and air quality checks both inside and outside the church will be taken for extra precaution. It is expected to last a few weeks.
Let us pray for the poor people of Haiti as they suffer yet another natural disaster. Our hearts also go out in prayer to the people of Afghanistan, as well as to the number of our countrymen and others in a precarious place in the midst of this sad situation. May lives be rescued, spared and respected. Let us pray for our men and women who have served our country in Afghanistan these past almost 20 years, particularly those who bear the scars of battle both physical and psychological, and those families who lost loved ones there.

To Whom Shall We Go?
The teachings of God have always been demanding.
From the time the Commandments were given (613 in total!) to the Israelite people, God has demanded more from us, and often these teachings present a challenge. It's easier to grumble and turn away from the challenge but, as Joshua exhorts his followers, "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 21).
Many turn away from Jesus because of the difficulty of his teachings. Whether on marriage, the Eucharist, or poverty, many have left Christianity behind for easier pastures. But Peter stands his ground and speaks on behalf of us all: "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6).
We've been called to live radically through our Baptism where God says to each person, just as he said to Jesus, “You are my son; you are my daughter.” We become part of God’s family with an invitation to a robust way of life, not mere servants bound to follow rules.

MASS SEATING, BAPTISMS & ADORATION UPDATES
1. Striving to best accommodate all seating preferences at our Masses: the School side of the church has no seating restrictions on distance and masks are optional, most of the Carman Road side offers social distancing and we ask all to wear masks on that side of church, and the Adoration Chapel offers an environment for those who are uncomfortable being in the main body of the church with unmasked individuals, therefore social distance and required masks are in order. Thank you for your understanding.
2. We will continue to have Sunday Mass at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM and 12:00 noon. Starting September 12, 2021, until the Sunday before Memorial Day 2022, we plan on the Sunday Mass schedule being: 7:30 AM (no music), 9:00 AM (Family Mass), 10:30 AM (Adult Choir Mass) and 12:00 noon.
3. Requests for Baptisms are being accepted for September and beyond, to be held on 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month at 1:30PM. Up to four families will be accommodated for each scheduled Baptism. Please contact the Rectory for availability and to set up an appointment.
4. Perpetual Adoration is scheduled to resume on Monday, September 13, 2021. Later this month we will begin the list anew and ask people to sign up as committed weekly adorers of our Lord for an hour of prayer with Him from Monday mornings through Friday evenings. Sign-ups will be online with an option to contact the Rectory directly. Based on the response and commitment, we will offer Adoration during the times that we will have sufficient coverage. Please spread the word!

We are blessed with some nice flowers and gardens around IHM. Recently, the Blessed Mother statue in front of the rectory had some work done to the plants.

Plan Set for Reopening
Schools in September
As New York state plans for the upcoming academic year, Catholic schools in the archdiocese are preparing for schools to be fully open and in-person for the fall with no remote or hybrid learning.
On Aug. 12, the superintendent of schools for the archdiocese released “Catholic Schools Open: We Continue to Soar,” a guide which details the archdiocese’s plan to ensure the maximum health, safety and care for children and staff in September.
“We are excited for all of our schools to be open five days a week for in-person instruction for all students, ensuring social distancing can safely be maintained in our buildings under the direct supervision of a teacher,” said Michael J. Deegan, superintendent of schools.
“Our number one focus continues to be offering an excellent academic program in a safe and nurturing environment.” He shared his gratitude for the Catholic Schools Reopening Advisory Council “for their work in updating the manual and to the principals and teachers who will implement it so we may maintain the same bubble of protection for our students and staff that we created over 18 months ago.”
The updated manual, distributed to parents, principals, school staff and faculty, is based on an international and national review of standards and guidelines, and was created by the Catholic Schools Reopening Advisory Council, in coordination with the Health and Safety Task Force of the Office of the Superintendent of Schools.
The manual outlines how schools will operate in the fall, including face covering guidelines, social distancing, facility requirements, daily protocols and procedures, sanitizing and disinfecting measures, and resources for families.
Students will be grouped into consistent pods each day, which reduces the number of students potentially exposed to someone infected with Covid-19. The students will remain together throughout the day in the same classroom or other designated areas of the building as much as possible, and teachers will change locations instead of students. Students will eat breakfast in the classroom, and all special subjects—art, music, physical education, language, computers—will be taught in the classroom.
Among protocols in place will be socially distant classrooms with hand sanitizer stations, mandatory temperature checks, a daily questionnaire for parents and masks for anyone who will enter the building.
As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and New York state, publish additional regulations, recommendations and guidance, the schools will adapt their plans to ensure compliance with federal, state and local officials. The archdiocese has also updated its video for school staff and families to watch so they may see firsthand how schools will be operating in the fall. The video is below:
In announcing the reopening plan, the superintendent’s office said Catholic schools in the archdiocese “remain committed to providing a first-rate education” as this year they will collaborate with global brands such as the Discovery Channel and Google “to enhance their stellar programs in science, technology, robotics, engineering, math and the arts.”
Catholic schools in the archdiocese serve nearly 55,000 students from pre-k through 12th grade across 172 schools in 10 counties.

Born in the 4th century in North Africa to Christian parents, Monica's patience and kindness helped to bring her husband's family to faith in Christ. After many years of wandering in the places of pleasure and privilege of the world, Augustine returned to the Christian faith and became a bishop and Doctor of the Church.

It is a 3-4 session program for teens 12-19 to address their substance use by providing education, support and motivation to reduce use. This model reflects the belief to effectively engage youth it is important to meet teens where they are, recognizing a teen may or may not see their use as a problem or see a need to change their behavior. Teen Intervene draws from various models proven effective in addressing substance use; including motivational interviewing, stages of change theory, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. The program is being offered virtually but may be in-person in the future.
