My dear friends,
A blessed May 1st to all - Memorial of Saint Joseph the Worker and a reminder that we are never satisfied with a purely earthly outlook and end to our labors. Rather we do it for the Lord Jesus and for His Body the Church like our spiritual Father, St. Joseph. As made in the image and likeness of God, our work is meant to be a participation and a continuation of God's incredible work of Creation and even Redemption. We do this by being good stewards of what we have and have been given. Our work is meant to develop our human nature and dignity and to help bring us to our eternal reward!
I am looking forward to the celebration of First Holy Communion this Saturday and next among our 2nd graders of our School and our Religious Education Program! This month of May, dedicated to Our Blessed Mother Mary, is a powerful reminder of the importance of coming to Mass, frequently receiving Our Lord in Holy Communion (or working to resolve what may be keeping a person from a worthy reception) and allowing Mary to keep us close to Jesus and His Peace in the Holy Rosary.
Sr. Mary Tommasino has completed her time at at IHM's House of Prayer on Friday, April 30th and has now moved to the Kittay Residence in the Bronx to a new community of the NY Sisters of Charity. We are sad to see her go. Some of the younger school children were able to wish her well in this transition - very appropriate as Sister was so involved in the formation of the very young over her earlier years. Flowers were sent to her at her new home on behalf of the parish to express our love to Sr. Mary for her important presence at IHM for over 35 years.
Perhaps you had an opportunity to meet Sister Juana Teresa and Sister Joan of the Disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ on their visit to IHM this past week? If so, you found them to be such a blessing. Please pray for their community's discernment of coming to the House of Prayer to continue the wonderful ministry of charismatic prayer and the presence of evangelization along with our own Sr. Nancy Kellar. We as Catholics believe in the powerful value and impact of the presence of consecrated women and men religious in the Church, especially in parishes.
After conferring with the Finance Council this past week, on May 3rd IHM will welcome Crystal Blue Cleaning Services, who already take such good care of cleaning and disinfecting the church and school, to take on a greater role of Facilities Management here at the Parish. This culminates a months long consultation with all parties, evaluation of what is taking place and a facilities audit to determine what is necessary to maintain the patrimony of the 4 buildings of the parish campus. All of this has now helped to usher in a new Maintenance Program and structure here at IHM.

We welcome, therefore, Diosel Schotten of Crystal Blue as IHM's new Facilities Manager! He will be present for 10 hours a week to join our Jesus Martinez, full-time Maintenance Tech/Supervisor, in helping to address the maintenance needs of IHM and to tend to preventive maintenance. Welcome Diosel!
I was given a nice surprise this week: my niece and her young family, who live overseas, upped the timing of their trip home to her folks (my brother and sister-in-law in North Carolina) and are spending a few days in New York City at this time! Thank you to those school families who are lending me some child car seats and vests! Please excuse me, therefore, for not being at the 5:30pm Saturday Mass and for departing after the 12:00 noon Sunday Mass begins. I am blessed to be together with Fr. Rafferty and Fr. Thumma, serving you in the parish, and I know that you are in excellent hands with my brother priests.
Due to this family visit, I have asked Fr. Justin Cinnante, O.Carm., to postpone his reflection on the Blessed Mother to the 8:00pm Holy Hour of Monday, May 10th.
Give us a couple of weeks to run through our candidates for the longest Immaculate Heart of Mary parishioner and to report back to you!
Along with our Principal, Tracy Keelin, I had the opportunity to meet with all the School Teachers this week as part of offering them their contracts for the 2021-2022 school year. These encounters allowed me to get to know our teachers better, appreciate what drew them to Catholic education and what now sustains them in this important work of the Mission of the Church. It was a delight to get to hear from them and to understand the gifts, expertise and vision they bring to the table - I am proud that our parish has such a wonderful Catholic school to offer families and it is a joy to serve here with such a dedicated Principal and hard working teachers and staff.
Father Thumma was able to concelebrate Msgr. Dermot Brennan's Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Parish in Yorktown Heights this past Wednesday representing our parish. As a beloved Parish Priest of IHM from 1970 to 1980, let us pray for the repose of Msgr. Dermot Brennan's soul at a parish Mass that will be added to the schedule this year for the Vigil of the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord on Wednesday, May 12th at 7:30PM. Please join us that evening!

MASS ATTENDANCE SAFETY PROTOCOLS
As we seek to renew our practices to keep everyone safe, please remember to disinfect when you enter the church and wear masks properly covering your mouth and nose, particularly if you should cough or sneeze. Always feel free to excuse yourself if you need to or if you feel unsafe. We encourage everyone to arrive early for Mass so as to assist in seating and to prevent your reserved seats from being given to others when Mass starts. After Mass, to avoid congregating, please exit by the closest door. Thank you for your attention to these reminders and to your understanding.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER

The National Day of Prayer is a vital part of our heritage. Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, the call to prayer has continued through our history, including President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863. In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual national day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May. Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. Last year, all 50 state governors plus the governors of several U.S. territories signed similar proclamations.

The Class of 1976 is starting to plan a class reunion scheduled for the spring of 2022.The tentative agenda is to hold a Mass followed by a dinner/cocktail party with music and lots of reminiscing. GOLDEN JUBILEE WEDDING MASS

Congratulations to all couples celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary this year! Please let the IHM Rectory know so as to request an Archdiocesan certificate to commemorate this important family milestone and witness of grace in our Church. Couples of the Archdiocese of New York celebrating 50 years of marriage during 2021 are invited to attend the Golden Jubilee Wedding Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, June 6, at 2:30PM. The Mass will be celebrated by His Eminence, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan.
Please note: Pews will be reserved for golden jubilee couples only. Up to two (2) additional family and friends will be accommodated in pews outside of the reserved section in general seating. All Golden Jubilee couples will receive a commemorative certificate. Couples who are unable to attend Mass but are celebrating fifty years of marriage may also register with their parish to receive a certificate.

SVAC is receiving their first vaccine allotment this week.
If you are a homebound resident 18 years of age or older in need of a COVID-19 vaccination, or someone responsible for the care of a homebound Scarsdalian, please contact the Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corp by phone at 914.722.2288 or by email using covid@scarsdalevac.com to make an appointment.
SVAC appointments are available between 9AM and 7PM and will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you reach voicemail when trying to schedule an appointment, please leave a message and SVAC personnel will return your call to schedule your in-home appointment with one of SVAC’s trained paramedics, free of charge.
Finally, please also note that SVAC offers COVID-19 testing, either rapid or molecular. Unlike COVID vaccinations, which are limited to homebound Scarsdalians, COVID testing is available for all Scarsdale residents. If you need a COVID-19 test, please make an appointment by calling 914.722.2288 or by going online at www.scarsdalevac.com/covid. When you arrive for your testing appointment, please remain in your car and SVAC personnel will come out to your vehicle.

YOUNG ADULT MASS
Fr. Jean-Pierre Seon, Parochial Vicar of St. Augustine’s parish in Ossining, will be the principal celebrant of the monthly Young Adult Mass on Wednesday, May 5, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Confessions will be available from 6:30-7:30pm. Mass will begin at 7:30pm. A social will follow at Connolly’s Pub & Restaurant (121 W. 45th Street).

Bill Targeting Pregnancy Centers Advances
The New York State Assembly Health Committee voted to advance A5499/S470, a bill intended to conduct a “study” of pro-life pregnancy centers. The bill would enable the Health Commissioner to subpoena pro-life centers and force them to produce an overwhelming volume of data and reports. The pre-determined outcome of the “study” is to find the centers “limited” because they do not provide abortion or abortion referrals.
Take action to protect pregnancy centers and the valuable work they do in offering women real help in times of crisis. Click here to contact your legislators and urge them to oppose this bill. May women in need of help be able to access the life-giving services of these centers without interference. May vulnerable women and their unborn children continue to find a refuge in the hearts of those who serve in crisis pregnancy centers.
