My dear friends,
It is amazing how 4 months have flown by since I landed and entered quarantine to begin as Pastor of IHM! Thank you for your welcome.
Congratulations to our parishioners, Barbara and Joseph Gusmano, who are among the longest married couples in the Archdiocese of New York at 70 years! This week is National Marriage Week and we are so happy to have such witnesses in our own parish!
Pope Francis called for a Year of Saint Joseph is a blessing not to be missed. To foster greater devotion to this Universal Patron of the Church, may I propose that our statue of Saint Joseph be placed where the image of Divine Mercy is in the sanctuary and that the image of Divine Mercy be positioned in front of the Adoration Chapel (between the Blessed Mother and Saint Terese)? This will add some symmetry between the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph in the sanctuary. It will also be a beautiful sign in front of the glass windows to the Adoration Chapel of the Font of Mercy that we find in the Eucharist and it will be close to the relic of Saint Faustina that is within.
I am looking forward to the monthly Parish Council Meeting on Monday evening and will solidify the Finance Committee in the next few days in order to meet this month as well.
This Sunday would also be Scont Sunday - Congratulations to all Sconts!
May the predicted snow kindly go away for this Sunday!

Glorious Saint Joseph,
Model of all those who are devoted to labor,
Obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of penance

To work conscientiously,
Putting the call of duty above my inclinations;
To work with gratitude and joy,
Considering it an honor to employ and develop,
By means of labor, the gifts received from God;
To work with order, peace, moderation, and patience,
Without ever recoiling before weariness or difficulties;
To work, above all, with purity of intention,
And with detachment from self,
Having always death before my eyes
And the account which I must render of time lost,

In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
In these short days and long nights of winter, after a year of living with Covid-
19, these lines from the Canticle of Zechariah sum up what many of us are longing for.
For Christians, of course, there’s no real need to wait for the dawn to break – that happened when Jesus was born. We simply need to step out of the shadow of death and look around at the world revealed by His light.
In that spirit, for the Winter 2021 issue of Archways, we reached out to parishes and ministries around the archdiocese. In “A Time to (Re)Build,” pastors tell us how their parishes responded to the shutdown and reached out to help parishioners and other neighbors in need. Leaders of Catholic Charities and ArchCare give on-the-ground accounts of work in service to the hungry and the homeless, the unemployed and under-supported, the elderly and the ill. And educators, youth ministers, leaders of diversity ministries and the president of Sisters of Charity add their voices, too.
We’ve also asked them what they are planning for 2021 and beyond – as well as how they might respond when, God willing, they receive the news that the pandemic has been contained.

- What Black Catholic leaders can teach us about the racial justice movement

BLACK HISTORY MONTH MASS
AT ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL
The Archdiocesan Black History Month Mass will be offered Sunday, February 7, at 1PM in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Due to capacity restrictions, organizers are encouraging the faithful to join them virtually via livestream through the cathedral’s Website, www.saintpatrickscathedral.org. The annual Mass, coordinated by the archdiocesan Office of Black Ministry, is traditionally offered on the first Sunday in February. It also celebrates the National Day of Prayer for the African American and African Family, founded by Father James E. Goode, O.F.M.

New York Encounter is an annual three-day public cultural event in the heart of New York City, offering opportunities for education, dialogue, and friendship. The 2021 edition will be online, available to everyone. All conferences and performances will be broadcast live from NYC and visible on the Encounter YouTube channel. So, the Encounter can happen where you are! And you can also build it with us by sharing the Encounter YouTube channel link with family, friends, and coworkers. When February comes, if local regulations allow, we may even organize small gatherings where the Encounter events can be publicly shown, followed by informal discussions. If that happens, a list of these local gatherings will be posted on our website, so please check if you'd like to join one near you!

Can this change be a milestone in the journey of life?
